20 mile run today.

Ran from chruch (Lockhart) to home. The total distance is 23.5 miles so I walked/jogged the last 3.5 miles. I'm happy to get this run under my belt but a little worried because my kneecap, on my left knee, was hurting after the run. About 12-13 miles into the run it started hurting a little but went away after a few miles then after the run started hurting even more. Today it's not too bad and I'm hoping it goes away with some rest. I'm sure it's just overuse. Anyway, I kept the pace I wanted with a few slow downs and speed up on the hills. I was even able to give a good effort on the last mile (7:18) but as usual, after 20, I wasn't sure I could have made it to 26.2. Even the last 3.5 miles, at a slow pace, were hard. I forgot my HR monitor so I don't have that information.

Nice run IJR! Great way to finish out the year!

I've had lots of knee aggravation over the years. Most of the time knee pain isn't anything to worry about. I usually find that my knees start bugging me for one (or more) of four reasons:

1) running on surfaces that are too hard, like concrete sidewalks.

2) Shoes have too many miles on them

3) Recent sudden increase in training mileage or intensity

4) Not doing enough strength training for my legs, such as squats and lunges.

Great run Preston ... I have never run a 20 miler that was not hard & hurt! Race day magic is the only way I run 26 ... & focused carb loading, fueling, adrenalin etc.

That is an awesome last mile!

Happy New Year!

Great run! I'm with JG, there's never an EASY 20-miler. Happy new year!

Solid run Preston....

Strong work, IJR. Nice last mile. I don't think I could change gears like that to the finish. My big run felt like I dragged myself across the end. If my math is right, you were 8:10 pace for the first 10, and 7:58 for the second 10. That is awesome. What a great way to end the year.

Thanks DL for the advice. I can see that any or all of these could contribute to my problem. I really don't have anywhere to run except on the road, my shoes should be good but I actually took the soft insoles out and replaced them with hard ones (several months ago). I don't like soft insoles for some reason. I did run this run in my Saucony Ride 4's with the soft insoles. My milage has been a little sparatic, if you look at each week (basiclly 60,30,60,30 but it's more because of when my long runs fell and not really increased milage. Lastly I haven't done any leg strength training so as you can see I'm probably guilty on most accounts.

Thanks JG, Joe and Rye,

I'm just a little afraid this was more of a race effort than a training effort. Time will tell.

Roads aren't too bad, but it is nice if you can get on soft surfaces on easy days. Sidewalks area lot worse than roads, in my experience. Concrete is harder than asphalt.
