FREEZING today.  38F.  When is spring going to get here?  Ran 3.5 miles with Lisa this morning at Weyerhauser loop, part around a cute little lake, I would totally go back there (uhh, with someone else, not alone!).  I think we walked about .6-.8 of this.  She did so great though, considering! ;-)  Then came home, grabbed Cooper, and headed out for 2 loops around the neighborhood to round it out at 6.64.  Overall slow, plus the walking, so total time was something like 1:14, and probably only 5.9 was running.  Not going to bother with the splits today!  

Thought maybe I'd do a longer run today but after last night's tennis thrashing my legs were dead and could barely get me around.  Now tons of cleaning and chores, then maybe some tennis and golf?  Investors?... possibly you!

In other news, I'm about halfway through Born to Run and I'm obsessed with it.  Its one of those books you don't want to ever be over.  Maybe I should try barefoot running!  Or sandal running?!

Another book I should read but it will take me like two years!? I notcied a guy at that fun run who was running barefoot and I thought he was crazy! Then there was that small part where it was only gravel and then the marshy, mud stuff... ouch! And cold!!

Re- Born To Run... isn't it great? Really good read. Prepare to be blown away when you get to Chapter 28. Well, I was. And I had already been familiar with the research.

So about barefooting it, my husband was already starting to run barefoot when the book came out (can't remember why). He still runs BF, almost exclusively. I don't think I'll be able to run BF anytime except summer. I was just getting my feet tough when September came and rain and darkness -- just not doable.

But I *have* switched all my shoes to racing flats - no "support," no stabilizing, little cushion, very lightweight. If the toe box is big enough, it feels a little like BF running but mostly it strengthens the feet and lower legs. I also have VFFs but I don't wear them much in the cold months. You can see all my shoes on my blog entries. A guy in my running club, who does ultras and Ironman Tri's (super fit and very fast), runs in minimal shoes and Tarahumara sandals exclusively. He has given me a lot of tips and help.

It takes a long time to transition, or did for me. I started by swinging by my house before my last half mile or mile and switching shoes or leaving shoes at home altogether (in summer). Then I started using the flats for shorter runs. My most minimal shoes (Mizuno Wave Universe and Asics Piranha) are still limited to 10 miles, but I think I'm going to try them on long runs soon. You also have to make sure your running form is good. I know some people say don't mess with your form - all I can say is I messed with mine and it was a very good decision that has paid off. I changed my form long before Born To Run came out. I run like Chi Running, or Pose Running, or Thomas Miller's Programmed To Run -- those are all similar.
