Qualify for Boston Marathon. Personal: Started running in November 2007 to get fit. Now I'm back almost to square one after back surgery. I did it once and I'll do it again.
"In truth, runners don't race other runners. They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares. And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. Even years into running, he can get better." Running for His Life by Michael Hall.

| | 830PM: Another beautiful evening for a run. Temp in the mid 60's w/ no wind. Gen aerobic + speed: Forgot to charge my garmin so I got the mileage from Google maps. Finished in just under an hour so overall pace was excellent, somewhere around 7:45/mi. Mixed in 8 x 100m strides. |

| | PM: Recovery run- easy 4M then last mile + @ goal MP (7:27/mi). Closed out another month w/ 250+ miles. Prior to this yr I'd only run that many mile in a month once, now I've done it 3 straight months. This is undoubtedly the best mileage base I've ever had going into a marathon. |

| | Aerobic + speed workout: 1M + warm to the club, 3 x 1600m @ 6:28/mi pace w/ 800m jogs, easy run back home. I was really feeling it on the last mile repeat. I more or less guessed that 6:30ish is closer to my true 5k pace than my current 5k PR. The last 5k that I ran in decent shape was over 2 yrs ago. I'll have to run, and finish, a 5k this summer to get a better sense of what my real 5k pace is at my current weight. | |

| | PM: Short easy recovery run on a cool & windless evening. Ran it nice and easy- 7:52/mi avg pace. The run was fantastic but I was a little bit annoyed by all of the auto sprinklers that are once again watering the sidewalks and a delinquent dog owner who neglected to keep his rabid dog on a leash and was then in no real hurry to restrain his animal. |

AM: Aerobic + speed- Easy, relaxed pace w/ 5 x 100m strides. Really tired this morning after getting to bed late after last night's workout. Had to get up and run early because I'm heading to Idaho City after work for a Boy Scout campout and won't be back until tomorrow afternoon.

| | Easy medium-long run. Broke out the HR monitor for the first time in forever. Kept the pace really comfortable: Avg HR was 139 but I never got any higher than 150, even on a couple of the mini-hills on my route. I got zero sleep last night at the Scout campout. Thought about just skipping tonight's run and catching up on rest but I'm glad I finished the week strong and stuck to my training plan. Only a few more shorter workouts left and we'll see what sort of dividend is paid from this training cycle. |
