Personal:

Started running in November 2007 to get fit. Now I'm back almost to square one after back surgery. I did it once and I'll do it again.

"In truth, runners don't race other runners. They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares. And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. Even years into running, he can get better."  Running for His Life by Michael Hall.

630AM: Easy run.  Probably shouldn't have run at all this morning.  Came home with the flu after Friday night's campout.  Had some leftover antibiotics that helped get me upright again but I'm still feeling really lethargic and achy. Hopefully, I be right again very soon. Don't have much time to gear up again for Poky in less than 8 wks.

We need to talk about Pocatello. I think we have the same goal time, about a 7:14 pace, right? Are you planning on keeping a steady pace throughout, or are you going to go faster on the downhill and try to hang on?

Definitely. We should work together to make this happen. I need to go sub 3:10 to at least have a chance at Boston. My initial thought is to go around 7:00 ish on the downhill and hit 7:15's for as long as I can in miles 14-20 and then just hang on during the last 10k. I'm open to suggestions though, seeing as how you've run this course before. Whaddya think?

I think running the race together is a great idea, but I have to tell you a story I heard when I was working at a nuclear power plant. Story goes that when they were building the plant, these three guys got an idea to steal a bunch of copper wire. So, they took off their shirts, wrapped the wire around their torso and walked out off the site at quitting time. As they were making the long walk to their cars in 100 degree heat, one of the guys passes out and falls face first on the ground. The other two, one his brother and the other his best friend, don't even miss a step. They just keep walking, get in their cars and drive home without even looking back, leaving their friend/brother's heat stricken body lying in the dirt to be fired, arrested and who knows what else.

That is the kind of loyalty I'll be expecting from you if things start going badly for me in Pocatello.

I think its important that we have come to that understanding upfront. However, I think that there's a 90% chance that you'll be abandoning me in a random POP around mile 22. ;)
