WOW, my achilles is REALLY on the mend.  YAHOO!!!   

I was quite motivated to run this morning because I talked to Coach De Reuck yesterday and he was glad to hear that my achilles is healing up nicely since he's (unbeknownst to me) pretty much been counting on me as the fifth member of the Running Republic Club team he has put together for cross country club nationals.  The 6K race is in Charlotte, NC on Sat., Dec. 11th.  He says the team would consist of Renee Metivier Baillie, Sarah Slattery, Sarah Vaughn, Colleen, and lil' old me racing for Darren's club team, Running Republic of Boulder.  According to Darren, we would have a very high chance of winning.  It sounds like a blast to me mostly because it would be a fun chance to meet and get to know Renee and the Sarahs, whom I've never actually met (I've only read about them seen them in passing).  They all live and train in Boulder though and could potentially be future running buddies for me to connect with once we move there in a couple of weeks.  

My only reservation is that I don't want to push my training (and my achilles) too fast or too soon and re-injure myself.  Coach suggested that I could just train in my road racing flats and not even bother getting a pair of cross country spikes since those things could really make my calves tight and cause more problems for me.  For now I'm still just taking it one day at a time but I'm praying I can keep getting stronger and be ready to go to Club Nationals next month.  We shall see....

That will be such a fun trip. I went with our local club last year and it was a blast. Kinda like reliving the old college XC days. Coach D's right about the spikes - unless it is a mud throshing pit you will have absolutely NO need for them. I think only 2 of our 7 girls bothered wearing them because no one owned a pair any more!

Burt-Yes, you've mentioned her beauty once or twice. You're right. She is beautiful.

Don-I completely agree. Spikes are just to risky for me at this point. Although according to my husband my problem is probably rooted in my form more than my shoes. In fact, minimalist shoes would enable me to be more in tune with my form and run more efficiently, so I guess I need to focus on form first.

Melody-Good to hear. To be honest, I'm a little concerned about the terrain in general. Super uneven, hilly terrain can be brutal on the achilles no matter what shoes I'm wearing. The jury is still out on whether I'm going or not. I'm just trying to get healed up more before I decide for sure.

Haha. No, I'm kidding. I am also doing a lot of ice cup massage, IB profin, compression sock wearing, plantar fascia boot wearing, eccentric calf raises, and single leg squats to get my foot intrinsics firing. Those things are all virtually free and are probably helping a TON. Get to it!

rolling your calf/near achilles using a tennis ball, or better yet a golf ball, (best on a phone book or something a little higher than the floor) is almost like ART or myofacial release ...
