Today I ran the Boston Marathon. This is a very old and apparently quite prestigious race in one of our nations' most historic cities.

I started out kind of slow and ran at increasingly slower speeds as the race progressed.Often I walked - beginning at 16 miles I took regular walking breaks. Had some great conversations with spectators who felt sorry for me. The best part was when it ended.

Hats off to Jeff Shadley who ran a truly inspiring race.

Oh sad :( I am sorry things hadn't gone as planned. Sounds like a brutal day for many. To the trails!!!

From Laputka on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 18:32:08 from 98.202.142.68

I'm sure this was hard for you to post but I'm glad you did. I have been thinking about you and others all day. I wish I was half the runner you are!

From Kelli on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 19:12:54 from 71.219.98.16

BEST race report yet!!!

From steve ash on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 19:24:01 from 50.8.121.33

Rob, That really sucks about the heat.. Did you have a good time though?

From steve ash on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 19:24:39 from 50.8.121.33

That is truly what counts:)

From dugco on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 19:24:59 from 68.35.221.180

Wish it could have gone better for you, Rob, but it sounds like the conditions were brutal. I was "watching" you and a large contingent from Tallahassee, and all of them really blew up after halfway - bummer.

From Rob on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 19:37:29 from 72.254.84.106

Hey, on the plus side you ran a BQ time.

So Sorry! It was painful watching it on TV, I'm glad it wasn't me.

From Jake K on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 19:51:06 from 50.138.183.237

This short concise report has me laughing so hard it hurts.

Can't wait to go for a SHP walk and talk about the massacre later this week!

From Andrea on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 19:51:09 from 50.138.183.237

You must've gotten the Gallo-walking idea from Jake's Philly race! If only you had started about a half mile earlier I would've definitely been able to spot you!

Brutal day today. I honestly have no motivation to race this course!

From Scott Ensign on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 19:55:42 from 70.58.98.19

you guys are my heroes Rob, way to hang tough on a horrible day. I would have just slept in and caught a stand by flight home. safe trip home and get some well deserved rest!!

From Neil on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 19:55:49 from 97.121.40.61

ROFL! This RR should be mandatory reading for anyone dumb enough to want to run a marathon. ;)

From baldnspicy on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 20:18:39 from 72.77.105.46

I'm changing my long term goals to NOT run Boston. Way to hang in there and finish, Rob. You still rock!

From Jon on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 20:22:32 from 74.177.96.130

Sweet. At least you maintained your sense of humor. Cheer up, you can look forward to our 50 miler later this year now.

From runningafterbabies on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 20:33:44 from 173.13.81.177

I laughed out loud reading your report. The title of the race really sums it up.

From Superfly on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 21:23:20 from 74.211.21.81

Good job man. Sorry the day was... just unthinkable.

From Bret on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 01:13:40 from 96.45.118.12

Great post Rob - There is simply very little you can do in a race that distance to deal with the heat. Sorry about your experience - had to be rough. And to think you used to train and race in Florida back in the day, right?

From jtshad on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 05:01:29 from 12.189.157.238

Tough day dude, hope the PF and foot are not too bad. Nicely done persevering and getting it done.

Thanks and congrats teammate. 4th place Master's team on a day like that...not too bad!

From Mark on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 06:55:14 from 24.129.132.78

Sorry it didn't go quite as planned. I think your overall place was a little better than 8000!

Nice effort and thanks for the easy to read race report - those long dramatic ones can be difficult to finish.

From Nate on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 08:05:08 from 67.20.216.17

Walking in a race is nice because you get to talk to people you wouldn't have had the chance to otherwise. Way to tough it out!

From allie on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 10:52:17 from 161.38.218.168

my favorite report thus far. sorry about the tough day, but nice job finishing it out.

From I Just Run on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 13:19:10 from 67.79.11.242

Sorry it wasn't a good experience...wish I could have been there for the bad expereince too :-(

From Fritz on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 18:14:06 from 65.116.116.6

I read every word of your report, it was that riveting. Nice job gutting it out.

From Rachelle on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 22:04:07 from 66.7.127.115

haha best race report yet. Thanks for the laugh and congrats on gutting it out and not becoming one of the 75 that ended up in the hospital!

From Rachelle on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 22:05:17 from 66.7.127.115

Oh and I should add that you still beat me. :) Maybe I should check into the galloway theory.
