14.5 miles on the Jeremy Ranch Road. 8.15 average so keepin' it chill today :-). Didn't drop under 8 minute pace until mile 12. Things I thought about along the way...

1. Teaching stuff and how to do it better. 2. The need to re-instate a military draft in this country. 3. The Pony Express and how cool that was. 4. Why the Murphy kids aren't into reading books of any kind ever when both their parents have college degrees and read all the time. 5. The importance of hydration on long summer runs. 5. How Trump Jr. just issued his third statement clarifying his meetings with Russians and how if you have to issue 3 statements on the same subject you are either lying or have horrible communication skills. 6. How it's possible that, given the fact that the JRR run is an out-and-back, there always seems to be a headwind both ways. 7. Maybe taking a quick trip to Lake Tahoe for a few days at the end of July.

( the Jeremy Ranch Road is the old Pony Express route from 1859-1860)

Excellent thoughts. Would have loved to have joined you in conversation on Jeremy Ranch Road. As long as you keep it chill...

Will you be in town for Des News this year?

Yes. Will you?

I think I can answer #4 - well, I can provide a smart aleck comment anyway. You guys are too smart/read too much... neither my wife nor I are big readers, but both our kids have always been impressively avid readers. What we did do is read to them very often when they were about 18 months to 5 yrs old - who knows?!

Thinking about doing the half...

Thanks Doug. We did what you did as well. At any rate, it's too late now. Crazy how kids are these independent beings with minds of their own huh? It may have been that fancy-pants private school you brung 'em to.

Love to see you Bret. Our guest bedroom will be occupied by my mom though. There's a really convenient and fairly new Hampton Inn right up on Foothill Blvd. Also the Marriott up by the 10k start.

Ah yes the fancy pants school did indeed offer huge cash rewards for number of books read during a week - I forgot about that ;-)

We do we need a military draft?

From Jason D on Mon, Jul 10, 2017 at 20:53:49 from 73.144.91.168

Much to respond to here. I'm not sure how to read #2. For or against? As for 4 I think it's important for children to have enough of their parents values while rejecting enough of them to do some thinking for their own. That said, I think people should read. Sadly, I'm very educated but read about as much as the "average" American. I did thoroughly enjoy Shop Class as Soulcraft if I didn't already mention that.

In the Midwest we get headwinds in at least three directions :-) I've never been in a race and thought,"wow this tailwind is really making things easy."

8. Why did Rob repeat number 5?

From Jon on Tue, Jul 11, 2017 at 07:48:03 from 165.156.40.29

Jason- you need to run Top of Utah half or full marathon. Leaving the canyon, you get a nice mile of strong tailwind pushing you along...
