Had a hard time at the Ogden Marathon today. Right on pace through the half (1:19) then jogged the last half.

No fluid would absorb from my stomach. I would drink and it was just staying in my stomach sloshing around. Then I would throw it up (twice) and feel better for a while but I knew it's not a good thing to be throwing up in a marathon. This was a really hard race for me. I don't think one positive thought went through my mind the entire way.I need to assess my attitude and mental prep for a marathon.

Finished sixth overall and, because Steve Anderson finished second they gave me the masters. I ran alone the whole way. My goal the last ten miles was to run as slow as possible and still hang on to sixth place.

Steve and his kids are coming over to the Marriot to swim now. The $275 I won covers my entry fee and the hotel.

One more thing... I'm not sure why, but there was a pretty high drop out rate today. Durning the last 10 miles I passed three guys who had been running well into the top 10. They were all walking or standing by the side of the course rubbing their hamstrings. I was thinking if five more dropped out I could win with a 2:50!

Oh yeah... once again. the course was about a quarter mile long. Also, at one of the water stops I drained my cup and, on the run, did an around the back toss from about 10 feet and got my cup in the trash box on a really high, looping arc. Got a great round of applause from all the race workers. This may have been the highlight of my race.

Also, hats off to Fritz who easily won the whole thing. What a tough marathoner he is.

Wow, that sounds brutal, yet you finished 6th overall. Impressive. I'm dealing with severe stomach issues today, too, so I'm glad I didn't run today.

Congrats on the master's win.

Good job of hanging in there on a tough day. It says a lot about your mental toughness to push through when your body isn't at 100%. As you know there are so many variables with this distance. You still ran a great time and finished sixth overall. Nice work.

Way to hang in there and "gut" it out. Impressive, and some hardware and cash to go along wit your effort. Maybe it's just me, but more often than not, races don't work out as planned. That's what makes racing so special and keeps us coming back for more, because when you have a killer race, very few things feel more satisfying. You're a heck of a runner to still be able to walk away as Top Master!

Ouch. Nice to break even but too bad it wasn't under better circumstances.

Congrats. Same thing for me, sloshy stomach after mile 15, threw up twice. Strange since it was great conditions.

Wow, I know your pain...I had it last weekend. Great job keeping going and grabbing the Master's title. Chalk it up to one of those days and focus on the next challenge.

A masters win is worth a little puke! Good job.

From RivertonPaul on Sat, May 21, 2011 at 18:47:41 from 71.38.224.155

Nice to win even when you were not up to full speed.

From dugco on Sat, May 21, 2011 at 19:17:35 from 68.35.221.180

Nice to see that even through all the sloshing and puking you could muster thoughts of a win by hoping your foes all blew up - sweet. Good job under less than ideal conditions.

From Scott Ensign on Sat, May 21, 2011 at 22:56:00 from 67.41.173.72

puking is no fun. that is still a great time, way to run through the pain. you are awesome.

Good run - Congrats on the Master's win. Also good to meet you and chat a little. You and Steve did great!

Man, tough race- puking on a marathon can't be fun. Nice job hanging on for the Master's win. No marathon is easy, some are just a bit tougher.

From Wesley Hunt on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 08:48:47 from 99.25.245.254

A win is a win is a win. Great effort and resilience exemplified again, and I'm not surprised. And around the back from 10 feet out...sweet!

From Steve on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 08:56:06 from 76.27.106.132

That was the best afternoon! Great run, Rob. Now I'm going to have to work on my water cup technique.

Aaaah man ... I am so sorry, Rob. BUT DANG ... you still took Masters!!!! I bow to your greatness!!!!

Btw, very impressed with your cup throwing prowess!! :) :) :) That is a mad skill that might be quite advantageous if you can translate it to spear throwing in the Super Spartan race on July 9th! :) Fonz and I are running it ... you in? I'm scared to death, but you would rock it!!! :)

From Fritz on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 14:55:12 from 65.100.192.74

Stomach issues are a huge bummer. Still a good time and a master's win. Nice job. I am jealous of your cup throwing skills. I usually miss from 2 ft away.
