Early morning treadmill workout...

1.5 mile warm-up

8 miles in 46:47 starting at 6 minute pace and working down to 5:30 pace. Hard for me to run like that at 5:30 in the AM. Kept the incline at 1.5%

Maybe a few afternoon miles depending on time and how I feel.

I'm very excited about the next couple days. Rod Smolla, a well known legal scholar and president of my alma mater, Furman University in Greenville SC, is coming to Utah to speak to my classes here at Alta High School. Prior to becomming president of Furman, Smolla was the dean of the Washington and Lee University Law School. He's probably most well known for a movie based on him called Deliberate Intent in which Timothy Hutton plays Smolla. He specializes in First Amendment cases and the film tells the story of how he successfully sued a publishing company for publishing a book called Hit Man which is a how to commit a murder guide. It was the first time in American legal history that this happened. Needless to say, this earned him the eternal scorn of "the First Amendment community".

We are having dinner with him tonight and he is speaking to our AP students all day on Friday.

PM: four miles - muy  facil.

Before running mile repeats @ 545am last week, I popped a caffeine pill before warming up. It sort of feels like cheating, but man - 15 minutes later I felt like it was 3pm and I was alert and ready to go. Might be worth considering for early morning hard efforts, when you need to get dialed in quickly and haven't been awake for too long.

I had two cups of coffee which worked but made me have to pee.

Nice work, Rob. I remember Deliberate Intent. Wish I was in Utah and I'd sneak in and catch one of his lectures.

Have a good time with your guest. Man, you are a history geek! ;)

Rob - No way I could do a hard, treadmill progressive that early in the am...though I do like Jake's caffeine pill idea.

I confess that I wasn't familiar with Rod Smolla before you sent me the article. Sort of sad in a way, and now I think I got short-changed on the First Amendment during law school!

That said, he appears to be an extremely interesting guy, and what he did took some serious stones and conviction. What bothers me more than anything is that the case never made it up to the Supreme Court. And I would be curious as to whether there have been subsequent cases seeking to apply this limitation on the scope of the first amendment (surely yes?).

Ask Mr. Smolla, as an academic and legal scholar, if somewhere deep down he wanted the Supreme Court to review the lower court's decision. He seems like the kind of guy who would have relished the challenge.
