am: Three easy miles on the treadmill. Plus about 45 minutes of strength training at the gym. Looking forward to a nice run this afternoon. We have sunshine and 40s in the forcast. Might even be able to wear shorts. Although with all the snow melting I'll probably finish with really wet feet.

pm: I decided to go to the gym again this afternoon to spare my legs and avoid our gunky red alert air here in the Salt Lake Valley. Ran 8.5 miles in 63 minutes on the treadmill.

After that, I walked over to Barnes and Nobel and read the entire issue of Trail Running without buying it, the family met me there and we went to Smashburger for dinner. I was "good" and skipped the fries - just a half pound burger.

What does "red alert air" mean?

My family had me go to Red Robin (gourmet burgers) which are quite good...but I always feel terrible the following day. My body doesn't process red meat like it did when I was younger.

The Salt Lake Valley is essentially a bowl. If we go too long without a storm or a change in the weather, the air becomes exceedingly polluted. We've been experiencing that the last few days.

Red Robin is Andy's favorite restaurant. He loves to sing the jingle whenever he gets it in his head that we should go there.

"Smashburger"- sounds awesome!

Bret- just go to Logan or SLC in the winter and you'll instantly understand "Red alert air".

Do you normally read Trail Runner?

Hey Jon - I have been to SLC in winter, but I guess I missed the red alert!

Not a reader of Trail Runner - but since your comment, I am now. I have a friend, novice runner, who is completely obsessed with Ultras and is trying to get me to run with him on 50 mile trail run here in Florida in January. I have not committed yet.
