Sitting at the airport in Long Beach now and checking the 10 day Boston forecast...

High of 63, Low of 47, cloudy, on race day. Not too bad although I'd rather see a high of 53.

Probably no run today. Up at 4:30 to get to the airport, Ann has to work tonight. Maybe get in a few laps around the block after the kids go to bed.

I think I'm going to pack it in for a while after Boston. Probably take a couple years off of serious training and racing. The training (more precisely, the worrying and fretting about the training) is starting to wear me down and there are some professional and family issues that need attention.

I'll be back when I'm fifty.

Not a bad forecast, especially if the clouds hold to be true.

Our master's team is looking strong! I wish you the very best in what may be your last race for a little while. I know for my own experience that it isn't easy to rein things in.

I hope you'll at least come jog around on Saturday runs w/ us if you go into semi-retirement!

My year last year was a lot more about just running (for fun mostly, not a lot of "workouts") and it was nice. It may have showed in my races, but I really enjoyed the runs and even the high mileage year more than "training" runs.

The key is to find your BALANCE...this is the key to life in my opinion.

Rob, I know what you mean.. I hope you can find a way to balance both.

Not going to quit running or get fat or stop blogging here. Just going to take things less seriously for a while in terms of my racing.

I know you'll be back:) Like me it's too much a part of you as a person to let go of.

It's so tricky and it doesn't get easier as you get older as I'm sure you've seen. It just gets that much harder.. But.. I think that is how we grow as runners and people.

Hmm, don't know where to start with this one. I'm just going to ramble a response. First, get the &%#@ out of the airport. hell holes. Second, did we ever train seriously? It's always come in second to our lives. I'm not so sure about the balance being an issue with the sport. I think it's about enjoying it. Balance happens when you listen to what your heart tells you what you should be doing with your life, not when you decide what the balance should be. It's like a dog chasing after a parked car. You're already there, Rob.

It would'nt matter if you had stopped running the last week and a half completely. You've been marathon training for years. At the most it would have cost speed, not the marathon; seconds per mile. You are lean, overall fit, and have an established endurance base. Boston is going to be a good weekend.

I expect a summer of racing with you so throw those thoughts to the wind.

Being serious all the time is a drag mentally and physically so I can understand feeling like needing a break. Each to their own when it comes to breaks, i.e. Jake's breaks might be a day, mine are a week or two, others might be months or years. Take whatever time you need but always remember there is a crew around to join you on easy breezy runs or to pound out some tempo miles. Enjoy the taper and have FUN at Boston!
