14.25 miles in 1:48 on the dirt road at Jeremy Ranch. Legs still a little sore and very sluggish. 71 degrees at the start, 81 at the finish. Tough run for me but I'm glad I did it.

Why does this run seem more uphill every time I do it? I actually thought about running that 150 foot drop per mile half marathon down in Utah County today but I'm glad I didn't now.Who knows how long it would have taken me to recover from that!

Jake brought up a good point that I knew but had forgotten about American distance running legend Pat Porter who died this week in a plane crash in Arizona. If you remember the Prefontaine movie Without Limits, it was Porter who played Lasse Viren in the movie. Nothing like getting an 8 time USA cross country champion to make the running scenes look believable.

Took the kids swimming at the Steiner pool and frozen yogurt after. Another 100 degree day here in Salt Lake. Watching Olympic beach volleyball now. Not a bad Saturday.

I'm pretty sure JR Road gets harder every time I run it. Wish I could've joined you guys this morning!

I was actually hoping you were going to be there. Had a bottle of gatorade for you to carry for me on your bike! Oh well, it was cold and awesome after the run.

Good run this morning. Glad we did that!

Jeremy Ranch sounds like a great place to run trails.

You know, I've kind of changed my mind about all these Utah halfs now that I'm not around them anymore. I mean, TOU 1/2 is still a cool race and somewhat legit, with only 625 ft net down. And Hobble Creek was always known as the screamer and fake times. But now it seems like every RD just tries to find a race with as much downhill as possible. I mean, 2000 ft drop at Timp Half? That's crazy- anyone who runs it and thinks they PR'ed is just kidding themselves. 2000 ft used to be a ton for a marathon, and now Utah has quite a few halfs with that much drop. I think the whole thing is a bit ridiculous. If I were around still, I'd be far more likely to run the SL Causeway half (or whatever it's called- the pancake flat one on the causeway to Antelope Island) then run some smoker downhill race.

Guess I'm the one stirring up trouble on the FRB now.

I guess if the 1000 ft. plus downhill drop halfs are all you ever run then you can legitimately call your time a PR right? The funny thing is how those races fill up so quick and the handful of races we have on legit courses don't fill up at all. It's what people expect.

I have to not try and post comments from my phone… Here’s an edited version.

Rob,

It was great getting to talk to you this morning. I agree that the way back to the car felt harder than the last time I was up there. Once the sun really hit us the heat didn’t help our cause either. However I have to admit it was one of my best runs in awhile. Thanks for setting it up with Jake.

Jon, I think the downhill debate is the same thing, just a different flavor, as the 6 hr marathon debate. People race for all different reasons. There are those that do it purely for fitness, fun, or a sense of accomplishment. Then there are those that do it for competition and the "purity" of the sport. I think there is room for both. I agree with Jake's comment about adding in additional shorter courses to match the downhill screamer halves. However, as it was pointed out the screamers, Ragnars, and mud runs are what fill up in no time. I think and agree with the idea that has always been pointed out on this blog, that the serious, purist runners are out numbered at least 50 to 1. At least for myself I like both. There is a reason I have run Des 10K 6 of the last seven years…

When races are competitive (like the Des News 10K, for instance), then who cares what the course profile looks like... in those cases, its about racing! :-)

From Jon on Sun, Jul 29, 2012 at 16:17:11 from 74.177.97.254

That's a good point, Jake- sometimes the competition is all that matters, not the course.

From Adam RW on Sun, Jul 29, 2012 at 16:39:05 from 67.182.250.241

So true. I would much rather take 10th and know I ran my best than win overall in a race with no competition.
