Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Slept like a brick because I was so tired from not getting enough sleep the night before.

Another 6 inches of snow overnight, I drive through it to meet up with MacK, though I was late, from crawling down the mountain.

The roads were slick for running, which should be no surprise.  The effort felt harder than 8:33 pace, but that's what the ave pace was.  It was nice to run outside and with MacK.

Legs still feel sore.  Stretching after.  Some mild pain/bugging in left knee, not really while running, but I sometimes feel it when on stairs.

Great run in cold and slippery conditions. Take care of that knee! What is your next race?

From Amber on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 10:44:18

Hey, just wanted to leave a comment for a few reasons :) 1. I think your dream about being VP is soo funny 2. I think you are an incredible runner! Wow! 3. I also like how in the middle of your marathon you thought of Alli whom you've never met and knew she would understand how you were feeling. BTW You did great in the marathon, even though I know it's not what you wanted.

Your running times are so amazing. I do have a question, , , what's the difference between unaided and aided on your accomplishments? I might just be dumb but I can't figure it out!

Good effort today. What time did you guys start? I left my house at 6:15 and followed some tracks down by the dairy road. I ran in my Yak Trax this morning and I was able to hold a good pace.

Good job again.

Maurine - next race? I may run a 10k in two weeks, but it would just be a workout. I will likely do the Provo 1/2 in April, but I will be out of shape, so again it would just be a long tempo. I'll be racing-racing again in May or June.

Amber - thanks for the supportive comments. On the aided vs non aided, I differentiate because they are two different kind of courses. Aided means downhill and/or significant tailwind assistance. Non aided means no net elevation loss and no wind help.

Tyler - I'll PM you the answer. I don't want any predators knowing too much about my start times/places. Are Yak Traks metal things you put on the bottom of your shoes to get a grip?

From tarzan on Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 11:53:23

Yak Traks are nice, but salt ruins the elastic too easily (they slip over your shoes). I like the hobnail kit I got at a running store. No slipping at all with that and you can use them year after year.
