Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Paul's birthday eve.  I didn't take an Aleve last night, but pain still 0-1.  Had Paul's brother's family over for dinner and dessert for Paul's bday.

We had a great holiday weekend.  A memorable on for the kids and us.

No aleve! Yeah!

I am glad you had a nice weekend Michelle, no crutches right?

From MichelleL on Mon, Jul 06, 2009 at 09:45:37 from 71.35.250.200

Yup. I have been walking on my own since June 25th.

This is great Michelle, sounds like you might be turning a corner ... keep up the good work (and the spirits). The donut story was pretty funny.

From MichelleL on Mon, Jul 06, 2009 at 10:02:00 from 71.35.250.200

I sure hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings about the donut. I was sad enough to eat the donut, but I just couldn't observe the race eating a donut, I had to make a stink about it, like my little private joke, that I'd trade places in a heartbeat if I could.

Happy birthday Paul.

Yeah happy b-day to paul. I think the donut taunting is classic :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Paul! Happy walking with no crutches and Sweet sleeping with no pain to you!!!

The donut was somewhat cruel, but not as bad as when all the throwers on my track team would order pizza at the end of the track meet...and of course they would arrive (with full aroma) during the 5000m. Nothing worse than smelling greasy pizza on lap 10 of a 5K. And then afterward my stomach would be too upset from the race to eat any.

Lion Queen - now, I have been offered many things, not so healthy while running - beer from the hash harriers, green beer at boston, ice cream, a sandwich - my favorite was a popsicle at Maui marathon, actually ate some it while running. Good attitude, I'm sure you will again be leading races and passing up tempting treats.

How are you feeling today Michelle???

From LuzyLew on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 16:31:04 from 208.187.197.42

What a horrific couple of weeks Michelle. But time is passing, and you HAVE been slowly getting better (that's the way this journal reads anyway). All this effort to heal, and patience in waiting for time to pass is a mental endurance all its own. I'm so glad the pain is becoming more manageable. Yay for laundry & weeding! (Well, you know what I mean). I had to laugh at the passive aggressive doughnut episode on July 4th. You totally deserve to blow off a little steam, you've been a really good sport cheering everyone on. We know you'd trade the doughnut for running. I have a really good feeling that you're healing, and doughnuts will be but a fond & ironic memory of all the things you gave up in order to do the right things for your body.

Yes, Paul, it was somewhat cruel, and somewhat self destructive, but as Luz said, it blew off the steam that was mounting. I wouldn't go as far as Brent, though, not sure it was a good attitude, but it was an attitude alright. I'm doing good Teena, and will post today soon.
