Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

I had the worst night of sleep in a while (I didn't take ambien).  I tried sleeping on my right side, since my IT bank on my left side hurts from always sleeping on it.  It doesn't hurt being on that side, but it HURTS to change position.  I dreamt I ran a marathon very slowly, and Sasha and that red head dude in MikeMC's picture (can't remember his name) both saw me when they were in mile 22 and I was like at mile 13 and they were trying to cheer me up ("you're doing great! total time is only 2:19 so far!"). I kept taking detours.

Day 33 withouth running

Day 22 on crutches

Day 20 on

Day 10 on bone stimulator

Pain about the same as when I got on the crutches - highly irritating.  I have an appt with Dr. McLane.  My questions for her will be:

1) Can I be healing if I feel the same as when I got on crutches?

2) Can we see the health of the cartilage in the MRI images?

3) Are we missing something?

4) Can I sleep on my right side?

5) Should I be in a full body cast?

6) Should I get off crutches even if my pain is gone?

7) What can I do to stop atrophy (mention involuntary stretches of legs)?

8) Could my hamstring be causing issues (mention increase in hamstring symptoms with no activity)?

9) Should I stay away from mild massage in my glutteal area?

10) If this is just a stress reaction, shouldn't it be healed already?

I wish so so so badly that I had some magic potion or something for you. I know that you have a good grip on things and have great perspective ... but man alive ... THIS STINKS!!!

It's so crazy how bodies react to compensatory things even when we don't realize we are compensating.

You are being so good and so patient. I'm with you though ... I can't help but wonder if they are missing something. After all, the practice of medicine is in fact just that, practice. One would think that you would be noticing a lot of improvement with a stress reaction by now.

I wish I could think of something funny, inspiring, or worthwhile to say.

Can't wait to hear the doc's answers to your questions.

I think you will have ups and downs. Typical, some days it seems like it will never heal or something else terrible is going on. Be patient and let the healing process work. You are young and should heal fast. Last week I had down days, not this extreme, but it looks like I'm finally on the up-swing. That light can be seen at the end of the tunnel. You are still using a flashlight, but that end will come into sight.

I like the "full body cast" question... a least you have not lost the sense of humor.

Hope the best for your appointment.

Have you tried sleeping upside down like a bat?

xoxoxo

So my experience with this area is that the pain lingers much longer than the injury. I have had SI pain off and on for many years, I think once you have had it you are prone to just have pain there even if the injury is gone. I think it has to do with the sciatic nerve being so close. I really hope yours leaves quickly, hang in there.

I was discussing you with Marion while running today (sorry - don't mean to rub it in). Would it help to mentally deal with the injury by picturing it as a result of a car accident (or something you couldn't control but severely injured you) instead of as a result of running stress?

Hang in there.

I know it stinks, but I couldn't help but giggle when I read the full body cast question only because I remember the famous Got Milk commercial when the guy is in a body cast and is talking with his mouth full of cookies lol
