Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Walked 1.75 on TM, nice long stretching session, then 30 min on medium edurance workout on the elliptical (2 min each level: 2,3,5,7,4,6,8,3,5,7,4,6,8,3,2).  I was sweating so much by the end of the session I couldn't keep my eyes open.  STINGS THE EYES! Sweat induced weight loss-at least it means I am working out.

I am so grateful that I can workout, that I am not in pain.

I plan to run a couple of miles tonight.

PM:  Walked 1 mile, then stretching, then 2.28 miles at 8:07 pace, nice bug swarm action, I am glad I had sunglasses for that, though I am sure I swallowed a couple.  HMMM.

So cool that you are not in pain anymore. The struggles we go through in life help us to realize small, and simple things that really matter to us.

I was up your way over labor day and was trying to find the time to call you to come see you but it never worked out. I am so glad you are doing better and no pain!

I love sweating. It at least makes you feel like you've really accomplished something. The Elliptical will totally work you out! It's your heart and cardio that need to get in shape first anyway. I read this article about an olympic swimmer (name I can't remember) whose friend gave her his entry to the NYC Marathon when he became injured. And without running a day in her life, she decided to try it. She ran the marathon in just over 4 hours--and according to the interview in Runners World, she continued to run. Cardiovascular capacity and endurance don't exactly get lost in translation. Way to sweat away without any pain! That's a win-win for sure.

P.S. you should get some of those Olivia Newton-John 'lets get physical' terry cloth matching wrist and head bands.

AWESOME two-a-day workout. You're doing so GOOD! YAY for no pain. I LOVE sweat...eyes stinging and all. Bugs-inhaling/eating is icky,,,hate that when it happens. Good thing you had your "windshield" on.

Michelle,

I'm so happy to read such an upbeat entry. I've been MIA and glad to come back to such great progress. The only reason I like to run on the treadmill is because it always gets a good sweat going.
