Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Ever feel like you are writing your own obit?

Well, so met with MacK after a 4 mile bike ride warm up.  Legs felt fine the first half, last half my bum got more and more sore.  I got to 4.75 miles with MacK but she could tell I was sore, so when I tried to tag on the .25 she said to go back to my car and she is right.  So I ran 4.77.

For a couple of weeks I have been doing 5 milers, but I feel by the end of the run like if I run more than 5 my legs are going to fall apart.  So my question is:

WHAT THE FREAK GOOD IS A FIVE MILE RUN TO A MARATHONER?  It's no good at all, except perhaps for a very minor fitness atrophy rate reduction, and I'm not gaining more weight.  The status quo cannot stand.  I have a Friday doc appt and will insist on a bone scan.  I will likely be out of commission for awhile.  If I just had a diagnosis it would help, but Dr. Brady originally said it was an SI joint issue, then said it was acting more like a pinched nerve.

I have goals.  This doesn't fit into the plan.  I feel like the hulk ready to morph.

PM:  The Hulk's been tamed by a gruelling (ok gruelling for me) afternoon bike ride.  15.07 miles in 1:01:59, ave pace 4:07, I finally figured out how to ride this bike a little faster, by holding the side handle bars-genius!  I got an appointment with Dr B for tomorrow, so that will be nice.  I just need to remember to not take it out on him.  I get way moody and somewhat unstable when I can't run and have no prospect of running.

Best wishes with your bone scan and finding a doc and/or treatment that will help you. I hope you goals and your body align sometime soon.

Lion Queen, we feel your pain, best wishes for an answer and a plan for recovery. Agree, nothing like running for a runner, cross training does not keep you in to running shape, hopefully, good cross training can shorten the comeback when healthy.

I'm sorry your frustrated. I hope that you can get some answers/direction soon.

Oh Michelle, I truly do feel for you! When your injured it seems like time just stands still and there's nothing you can do about it! Do what you have to do and find a way to get healthy, and just remember 5 miles a day is better than no miles at all;-)take it from someone who knows;-)(about being injured)

That's the best I have kiddo...

I hope that you get back soon! I hate doing speed alone. That kind of sounds bad! But hey, I am sure that drug users hate doing speed alone too?

From Bonnie on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 15:58:13 from 128.196.228.134

Michelle, I am so sorry -- I hear your frustration (though your good humor shines through your telling of it, and that is a good thing).

I was just telling Dean yesterday that I would give up all my current running success to be able to see him run well again ... it is so hard on him to be injured for so long (going on 4 months!). I wish the same for you (though it doesn't help you I do try to enjoy even my worst runs because I realize how lucky I am!).

Boy does it make me feel like a schmuck to get sympathetic comments from Paul, Clay and Brent. You all have been so positive through really tough circumstances. I do feel like my blog is my appropriate place to vent, but it must be hard for you to read my bratty response to my short (so far) sidelining injury. My apologies :)

Tyler - you're so selfish :) j/k, you know I want to be out there doing the speed. It's going to be a good while. First - heal (4 wks?), Second - base build (8 weeks? half w/o tempos, then introduce tempos), boy it's going to be a good half year before I'll be able to keep up, probably. It was nice knowing you.

Bonnie - was actually close to hysterical, but glad my blog still held some entertainment value :) I am in a much better mood now. Could you just feel all the expletives I didn't add in? I kept trying to keep it clean. But I've got a black heart :D

From Bonnie on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 20:04:29 from 128.196.228.134

I felt it Michelle - I thought of you on Sunday - did you read about my snake story? I yelled (ok, twice I admit) an expletive and then apologized to you

;-).

Though I was laughing when I did it so I am not sure what that means.

I will add on my two cents:) Maybe it's those crappin orthotics. My experience with them is they help at first but after a while make your feet and other muscles weak and you are more prone to injury. I am still dealing with my injury and Dr.B swore it would go away with my orthotics, plus they are making my shins hurt along with other stuff. I might try to transition out of them and see if that helps. What do have to lose? That is what I am going to do, I bought some soft sole moldable insert for 30 buck and will use those for a while. Then just go back to plain old shoes. I am pretty sure that injury and long distance running just go hand in hand. I sure feel for you though. I have seen my goals float farther away as time goes by. But I do know that some day the both of us will get there. Be patient:)

From Brent on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 22:39:51 from 66.7.127.219

Michelle, intereting comments by Josse regarding the orthos. I have running friends that have given up on orthos, for the reasons Josse mentioned. I could write a book about all the injuries over my 30 years of running. We have all shared the same feelings when injury side tracks goals and we wonder if we will get back. Being at your best is such high risk and high reward game. No smucks on this blog, just darn dedicated runners. We all want you back in top form, you are one of the rock stars of the blog.

I feel for you! I'd tell you to enjoy the break but that won't make you feel any better...I hated that comment last year. So it's going to be miserable but IT WILL END....eventually. Love You

:(

My ankle is better this morning, so I won't be having my appointment RUINED(delayed for hours) by your pain in the butt! ;D Good luck today :) I am really interested to see what that bone scan says.... hmmmmmm

From jona on Wed, Mar 25, 2009 at 12:04:45 from 69.27.13.147

Michelle/Josse - I came across something VERY interesting about ortho's a week or two ago that I thought I would through out there to you. I'm pretty sure most ortho's are there to correct some sort of pronation problem. A lot of people get fitted for ortho's and then just put them into their shoes. Well, are your shoes already compensating for pronation? You should probably make sure you are using the ortho's in shoes that are neutral so you are not OVER correcting. Just a thought. You probably have already done that.

From MichelleL on Wed, Mar 25, 2009 at 23:21:43 from 67.41.191.61

Marion - glad you're doing better, sorry the kids were puking for you.

Jon - That is something I looked into when I first got orthotics. I will double check all of my shoes but I am pretty sure they are neutral.

Michelle, I am sorry for your frustration and pain. I am not an elite athlete like you are, so I can only imagine how hard this is for you. It reminds me of watching Deena Kastor breaking a bone less than 5 miles into one of the races of her life.

Hang in there and you will come back even stronger. We are all pulling for you!
