So the hubby and I started out the new year with a 8 mile run together. It wasn't our best as we were headed into a head wind all the way and came home feeling like popcicles. On the positive side, it wasn't my fastest run or longest but I've had my shower and thawed out and feel pretty good so I feel like I am feeling pretty good coming off my month of most miles ever (Dec.132) I never would have thought that would have been possible in Dec. as crazy as it was! I am going to do some thinking about my running goals for the year but I guess I will start it out with a bang and register a little later for the Painters half!

Michelle, thanks for the comments. Did your hubby get some new shoes? Does he have and interest in running some races? Congrads on the big mile month for December. Maybe you both run the St.George marathon this year. You are off to a great start in getting ready, good base for miles.

Stay Cool, not freezing, B of BS Rools out. (The thing is, how do you not freeze in this darn weather?)

Way to start off the year! Braving the elements too! GREAT JOB!!!

YEA YEA YEA YEA YEA YEA YEA!!!! Omigosh I am so happy to hear that you are going to do the Painters half. You are totally ready!

And by the way, YOU will be the one pacing me, I think.

Great job on 8 on the first day of '08. Kind of poetic, or maybe I'm just tired. ;)

Good luck with the Painters 1/2 - you will do great!!!

So I guess that I get a goose egg for the day! I was up till like 2 this morning and when the kids left I took a nap. I was going to to get out this morning but decided that my body needed sleep more than a run. Then I had to go to Ephraim to move my daughter into her aparment. Once she is there permanently (Sat.) the sleep department of my life will improve a bunch! I know that I still have time to get a run in to day, but I still feel like I'm completely dead from the last couple of days so I'm going to chalk it up to a day off and get going tomorrow!!! Hopefully I can get my scheduled miles in throughout the week still with the lack of them today!

From Stacy on Wed, Jan 02, 2008 at 21:08:30

It's good that you listen to your body. Sometimes running is the thing to do, but other times you need the extra sleep.

From Jody on Wed, Jan 02, 2008 at 21:24:04

Great sleep time - I am not getting any!! Sometimes a day or two off helps both the body and the mind.

From Kim on Wed, Jan 02, 2008 at 21:33:16

I don't know how you keep it up on your schedule! I think you are wise to listen to your body.

About your daughter...Tom is from Ephraim and I am from Manti, so she is moving to our old stompin' gounds! We loved growing up down there! Our son went to a quarter of Snow College before he went on his mission. He loved it down there! Hopefully she will love it too! She is kind of use to the small town feeling so she should do great. Sometimes the big city kids aren't so happy down there.

From Christi on Wed, Jan 02, 2008 at 22:35:05

Don't be hard on yourself, you deserve a day off! You'll have to look at my blog for laughs- I was also up 'til 2 and took a nap today- ha! Can't believe your daughter is moving out on her own. Are you freaking out?

From Bethany on Thu, Jan 03, 2008 at 00:01:15

You havent had a real break for a while! You deserve it. Enjoy your sleep tonight!

From Lybi on Thu, Jan 03, 2008 at 00:52:04

I agree that it does sound like you needed the sleep more. Hope you get a little more rest soon, wonder woman!

Got the run in early this morning. I put on every warm thing I had to head out and thought I might freeze to death but when I stepped out of the garage it was actually quite warm and I was pleasantly surprised! Ran with the hubby this morning and it felt quite good. Contrary to popular belief, I think the day off yesterday did the body good. Legs felt nice and fresh today. My hubby ditched out early this morning to get ready for work and I haven't been wearing my ipod when we run together and I was surprised how enjoyable the run was without the music and doing the last couple of miles alone. It was a nice peaceful morning and even my huffing and puffing wasn't too bad today. May even take another nap today, I logged 7 hours for sleep, but that was time in bed, just not sleeping well the last two nights. Maybe it was too many night shifts in a row that has the clock all messed up but I feel like I was up every hour on the hour last night! One more thought....My husband is having pain on the outside of his foot, along the edge. Anyone have any thoughts on that. It is really bothering him after the 8 miles run the other day. I need to get him feeling better, was just starting to like having him along (HE,HE) JK!! Thought that I have had almost all running pains and problems there is to have, but no experience here....thankfully!

Nice job getting the run in early. Sounds like it was a great run and the rest did you good! I'm suprised you sleep as well as you do for working night shifts. Jim is always messed up going between his nights on & off! You are amazing!! Not sure about your hubby's foot, but I wonder if he's pronating and rolling on the outside of his foot- maybe he needs motion control shoes? Take that for what its worth- I know nothing!! Have a great day Michelle!

From Jody on Thu, Jan 03, 2008 at 19:02:32

Great job!! I do not know how you do it, working nights and trying to raise a family. I agree with Christi on the shoes - I think that they can cure almost anything. Maybe I need a new pair too.

From laura on Thu, Jan 03, 2008 at 22:54:30

What a rough night, Michelle. I'm so sorry - I hate nights like that. I'm still up at least once every night to nurse, so I completely sympathize! Great job running - looks like you're really gonna be ready for your 1/2!! Bring it on!

From Lybi on Thu, Jan 03, 2008 at 23:14:38

Good run, Michelle! Sorry about the rough nights. Boy that really adds up! You are so cute running with your hubby all the time. You used to be so sad that you had no running buddy, and look! Now you have the best running buddy possible. It just goes to show--if you keep at it, the running buddy will come...

First off slept much better last night and woke up feeling rested!!! I wanted to do a 12 mile run today or tomorrow, and when I took my daughter to school today it was almost 40 degrees so I thought that I would take advantage of the warmth and do the long run today. I feel a little bad because I ended up wimping out a bit.... I know I could have pushed through to 12 but I didn't. First of all I ran in new shoes today and they are probably not the best shoes but I couldn't beat the price and second about 4 miles into the run wind became a factor. As the run went on it continued to get harder as I got tireder. The whole run felt hard from about 5 miles on. I hope that is was just an off day as other long runs have felt better. Now I'm wondering how to continue to prepare for Painters? I am still looking at it as a training/see what happens run, but I wonder if I should do some more long runs before it or just start to level off and work down? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! TGIF :)

Sorry, no advice from me! I am definitely not qualified in that arena. But, just wanted to cheer you on. Great job running through what sounds like a tough, windy route. Good luck in your training!

From Brent on Fri, Jan 04, 2008 at 20:51:06

Well, from you training, you could run another long run next weekend and have a week to taper. Question first, how long did it take you to recover from the last 10 plus miler? Also, a factor is how hard you are running them and what your goals are at Painters? I think Sasha mentioned to start with Lybi? I ususally run a hard run on the tuesday before a half marathon, two days easy and then friday real easy with a shorter than normal run.

Your ready, you will do fine.

From Jody on Fri, Jan 04, 2008 at 23:19:58

Great job! Wind is the worst!! You are doing such a great job and will be fine at Painters. I ran my second 1/2 marathon with my longest run only being a 10 miler. I do not recomend it, but I felt good until the last mile. You are going to do fantastic!!

From Lybi on Sat, Jan 05, 2008 at 00:24:38

You've done a lot of great 10 milers. I have no doubt you will be fine! You may need a wheelbarrow to carry me in at some point, but you will be fine!

Ted (Armyrunner) gave me some advice on my Thurs. blog about how to taper for this thing. Check it out.

Well it's blowing and raining and just plain ugly out, so I knew that I was doomed to the dreadmill.... uggg! I was going to keep it light today maybe not 2 miles light, but I always go EXTRA light when I'm running on the treadmill. After the torture of that I did some leg work with some squats, lunges and a some abs. to make up for the wimpy run. Legs feel pretty good today after the long run yesterday, they were pretty tired last night, more so than usual. I think that is because of the new shoes just not as supportive as my others, but overall no complaints. Great sleep last night couldn't have hurt either!!! Happy weekend!

For my own info. to plan Next week I'm planning on doing a few 6 and then my regular 5's with a long run on Friday or Sat. the week of Painters probably 6,5,4,3,2 and then the half on Sat. unless anyone has any other suggestions that would be more beneficial for me I'll try to stick to something close to that!

Nice mileage this week- even with your busy life (holidays, daughter moving out- etc) You are STRONG! Good job on the toning too. So you got new shoes? What kind? I plan on getting some soon, still deciding which ones... (oh yeah, and sorry- no great tapering/training advice here, I'll leave that to the pros!)

From Kim on Sat, Jan 05, 2008 at 23:37:43

Tom helped me decide how to taper for Painter's. Here is what I have planned. Mon. 5, Tues. 5, Wed. 2-3, Thur. 4, Fri. 0, Sat. Race day. I'm not sure if that is what everyone would do, but if it works for Tom it works for me. I still don't know what is going on with my friend. Hopefully I will know this week and I will let you know. I would like to run with you and Lybi, but not quite sure I could keep up with you. I'm looking forward to meeting you in person!

From Kim on Sun, Jan 06, 2008 at 10:18:49

After Tom read my comment he said I could probably do a bit less than four on Thurs.

From Brent on Mon, Jan 07, 2008 at 15:17:02

Michelle, any chance of taking the shoes back if you don't really like them? Some stores will take them back for exchange. I like you taper plan, I did not see ice cream as part of the plan? You can ice injuries from the inside out!

Got it done, that was questionable earlier after working last night and having the "Callzee" home sick yesterday and today. (Next I'm going to see if she has strep? ) First half of the run felt hard, second half felt really good. Funny how that is...first half more uphill, second half more down hill! At least I end on a good note and it keeps me coming back for more. Was pleasantly surprised when I finally made it out to run the sun was out and the ice skating rink that I came home from work on and took my daughter to school on was mostly melted and the roads were only wet. Although it was cold out the sun shining made it feel pretty nice. So bright out that I had to weat sunglasses...so overall if you have to have winter this is still a great running day! Sunday my legs were so sore from the leg exercises that I thought that running would be too painful to bear, after a day off I have recovered pretty well so I'm glad for that, hope to do that a few times a week, I hope I can keep it up but if seems that even with the best intentions that I seem to let that slide!! UhGG!!

No painters half for us, maybe next year. We have several races and mini trips planned, Moab for Sylvie, Odgen marathon, possible Rock n Roll Marathon San Diego, Bryce Canyon Half, St. George, etc. Trying to stretch our vacation bucks after the Hawaii trip. By the way, is your daughter still running, that 9 minute mile?

Thought that it would be a little on the colder side when I headed out, but about .5 into the run was shedding a layer. Love it when it's warmer than expected, that's always a pleasant surprise!! I never can tell so I always dress for the worst. By the end I could have peeled another layer off but was close to being done so just finished it off. Legs felt pretty good once they got going and would have liked to have added another mile but I got off later than I thought because of the moaning sick kid at home, and had to be home to pick up my other daughter from school. I don't know if the route that I took today was a little easier or if my attempt at some strides was succesfull, as I'm not sure of the correct way to do them, but my average pace was 9:33 and I have been averaging around 9:45ish so maybe it worked! Well off to get ready for work, I'll catch up on all the daily bloggie news in the peacefull quiet hours of the night at work!

The parkway runs from about 21st south, to 8700 south along the Jordan River. It picks up again at about 106th south and runs to 137000 south. We live about 30 seconds off the parkway in Murray. Great place to run in the summer with water fountains, bathrooms and no need to worry about cars.

Painters is getting close, are you excited?

Didn't much feel like going out today but considered the alternative (dreadmill) and got dressed to go out. It was around 30 degrees and lightly snowing throughout the run. I got warm fast and again peeled off an extra layer. Felt pretty slugish, I think that the night shift, sick kid sleeping with me in the day stuff is catching up, so I decided to relax and take it slow. It was really quite a pleasant run in that kids were out playing in the snow all over and with the light snow fall and snow on the ground it was really pretty out. Most of the streets had melted off pretty well, but at times I was still in the "splash zone"! Most of the time not too bad though! I actually was excitted to get home and finish off the driveway that my husband did not get to before he went to work, so I looked at that as my reward for enduring too the end on a tired day! Watched one guy getting pulled out of an embankment that he pulled into to load his 4-wheeler and couldn't get out. After he was succesfully towed out he drove passed me slowly and gave a few obnoxious cat calls. I was too focused on the run to call back anything appropraitely intelligent, but I can think of a few good come backs now! O-well, probably not woth the extra effort!!!

From Jody on Wed, Jan 09, 2008 at 20:06:25

Way to get out there today!! Your doing such a great job! Paula and I only get cat calls when our friend Tami runs with us - Take it as a complement!

From Kim on Wed, Jan 09, 2008 at 20:17:12

Michelle,

Maybe the cat calls came from peeling off too many extra layers! :)

Tom and I aren't going to be able to make it to the blog party the night before Painter's. We'll have to hook up some way so we know how to meet the morning of the race. Just know that if I can't keep up with you please just go for your best! I don't want to be slowing anyone down. Hopefully we will be close to each other's level, but it's hard to know since we have never ran together. I wonder if anyone else will be joining us.

From Shauna on Wed, Jan 09, 2008 at 22:13:02

He probably thought you were hot stuff! As obnoxious as cat calls are, and no matter what the intentions really are, I take them as meaning that I am a TOTAL HOTTIE! Ha! I'm delusional, I know...It makes it more fun, though!

However, I'm WAY over due on any cat calls...hum...Anyway- sounds like a beautiful run w/ the light snow fall. Make the best of today!!! (and hey- maybe 'cause its early in the morning and I'm feeling fresh- but today the 1/2 sounds kinda appealing. I'll let you know tomorrow! I know I'm annoyingly (word?) indecisive!)

From Christi on Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 12:15:34

You are right on the sleep. I say sometimes the miles have to give a little when the sleep doesn't happen like we would like it to. For some reason I could not sleep last night. I don't know if it is because of my 11 miles yesterday, thinking of getting up at 5:30 to get today's in or what. All I know is that I sat up and read until about 1:00. Then I thought I might as well unload the dishwasher. So one thing led to another and I got my kitchen clean at about 2:00 this morning. (Too bad I didn't have a mopping machine to be helping me out.) Anyway, 5:30 rolled around and there was no way I was getting out of bed. I knew that meant giving up miles for today, but to me, my sanity is more than just running. (Blasphemy, I know!)

According to the ipod, 12.84. I think that if I clocked it I would be around 13, so I feel better about getting in one more long run in before Painters. I started out doing a different run than I ended up doing, so it meant that I would have to do it without any gatoraide or water, but I'm pretty used to that. When I was about 4 miles into the run I changed my mind and kkept going to Monroe to my husbands school, which sounded better than looping around town a bunch, and even though it MAY? have been a little harder run I was glad that I changed the plan. Perfect day for a long run, and I love running that back road to Monroe as you just wind throught the fields and it's very peacefull. Almost everyone I waved at waved back which gave me something to do and one little old guy gave me a cute thumbs up!! Looking forward to the thought of a little taper coming up and am excitted to meet new bloggy faces and see everyone that I already know again! Should be a great time for all!!! hurried home and streched a little and took about a 10 minute hot bath and so far the legs feel pretty good! He had to be into work at 6:00 a.m. yesterday and didn't run and he was feeling rested and ready to go. I on the other hand didn''t feel bad considering the long run yesterday but "rested" was a little more than a term I would use. I started out telling him to be nice to me. We did the first 3 pretty well and he stayed with me. After that I either got slower or he got faster but the gap was getting bigger (maybe a little of both). When we got to the turn to go home he took the ipod to do a few more and I slipped home. All in all I still feel pretty good and am looking forward to tomorrow off from running and then will start to taper off next week.

Good job, Michelle. You and your hubby are such a cute couple!

You asked about the get together- the latest is that we're meeting at Steve Hoopers. He was nice enough to offer to host at his new house. I think it will be similar to Mik'L party. Steve will provide pasta- everyone else to bring a side dish. I'm still going to try to find some good pants this week to wear. (ok that was random... hee hee)

Gotta' love husbands who help motivate us. I can't believe your hubby hasn't joined the blog yet.

I kind of feel like a kid at Christmas. Counting down the days until Saturday. Weird....running 13 miles/Christmas? What's up with that? See you soon! Hope this week of tapering is enjoyable. I am actually going to do about the same as you with the taper. 5,4,3,2,1. Blast Off!

Crazy day today!  After working the nightshift and getting the kids off I layed down but had to be to a meeting back at work around 2 and then back to work at 5:30.  Day sleep isn't the best but knowing that I have a meeting doesn't help, hard to relax and rest...blah, blah, blah!!  I went to my metting hurried home and got my run in.  As I was headed out the door I saw that the ipod was completely dead...hubby used it last, must not know how to turn it off, he just put it on hold.  So solo run, no music, no watch, just me and my thoughts.  Run felt a little hard but I'm attributing that to low sleep, hurrying to get home to go back to work and just feeling rushed even though I felt like I was hardly moving!  Mondays after night shift always tend to feel this way, need to get used to it.  The rest of the week should be a little less rushed and as I taper down should feel pretty good!  Looking forward to the taper and  seeing everone!

So far haven't made it out, not sure if I will? The wind is howling (o.k. just blowing) but it doesn't look fun out there! We have a lot going on tonight and so I'm going to try and sneek in some treadmill time! (That never goes to great so we'll see!)

I'm kinda wondering what I have gotten myself in for this weekend.... It's not that I don't think that I can do it and I'm truely not too concerned with the time. So I'm not sure why I feel a little nervous about the whole thing, but I'm starting to feel that way! I also should be eating better than ever this week and last and the one before that....but all I seem to want to put in my mouth is junk? Is this the way pre-race jitters (not that I'm racing anyone) or am I just crazy?

Two painful miles on the treadmill, found old Sawyer Brown CD, I know how some of you feel about country music, but "The race is on", "Step that Step" and some other great songs they sing were the ticket to get me through! I should put them on my ipod, they could be great outside! Now the "Race is on" to shower, make dinner, get to a youth activity and my daughters basketball game and then maybe two more miles tonight if I'm not too tired!

I am feeling a little the same. I think when I have ran a half marathon before I did it "just to finish". This is really the first time I've had some goals in mind and have been working towards something. I think I am a little nervous about disappointing myself. I think it's OK to have a little pre-race jitters, it's part of the whole race package, even though the only person we are racing against is ourselves. Did you get my cell phone number in a personal email message to you? Hopefully I'll be able to drop by the party for a few minutes and we can make some plans. T minus 4 days and counting!

From Christi on Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 00:37:05

Hey Michelle & Kim- sounds like we all have the pre-race jitters. I have come to expect them. I've run quite a few races and still get nervous before every one. I'm just telling myself I'm going on a long run w/ friends. I'm mostly nervous about disappointing myself because I haven't really trained well for this run. But hey- I'm thinking of it as a winter training run- great way to kick off 2008! You girls on the other hand are READY! You have been consistent and are well trained. You're gonna do GREAT!

From andee on Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 10:07:59

I think your feelings are all normal. You have trained and prepared and you will have wonderful experience on Saturday. It will be a great start to your year of running. I'm jealous because you are all going to have such a fun time. GOOD LUCK!

From Shauna on Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 16:56:24

I am the queen of pre-race jitters! Check out my "mileage" last week before the marathon. It was really hard to do any running, and I kept psyching myself out too. It's totally normal. You are prepared, and I know you'll do great!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

I think the treadmill chewed me up and spit me out today! I think that if I could run 10 miles on the treadmill, I could run a marathon! (Not that I'm going to try either anytime soon.) I feel like I should have gone more with the lacking miles yesterday, but since I was sentenced to the treadmill (again) I did the bare minimum. I hope that I'm not messing with how things will turn out this weekend by being so sloppy this week! It has just been sooo darn cold today I waited to see if it would warm up and it's still below 20 degrees, when I took my daughter to school this morning it was 8. This is where I draw the line between running and freezing and I prefer not to freeze! (yes, I am just a little whimpy, and I am totally o.k. with that!)

From Tom on Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 15:31:11

Michelle you'll be just fine for the race. There is really nothing much in the way of training that you can do the week before that is going to affect your fitness level. More common are those runners who overdo it the days leading up to a race and then bomb out on the race. Even if you did no running at all until the race you would do great.

That being said I totally agree that a taper is tough and can make you a little crazy sometimes. It's also common for mystery aches and pains and a perception of dead legs to show up during this week.

I'm excited to see how your FRB running gang of 5 (I think 5 right? Maybe 4 if Lybi has to bail :() will do.

From Bethany on Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 16:06:36

I am so impressed you are going for it the weekend! I am anxious to read all the race reports. I am proud of you for sticking to your game plan and taking it easy this week (well, the treadmill can never be labeled "easy"...) I agree with your temperature assessment. Freezing is definitely not on my list of things that make me happy. And it happens so easily!! Just keep up the positive thinking and you are going to be great. You have done the work, now "enjoy" the fruits.

From Jody on Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 22:16:06

From Brent on Wed, Jan 16, 2008 at 22:21:48

Michelle, I agree with you on the cold thing, under 10 degrees, do the legs really warm up? what is the risk of injury with cold muscles if you slip. I never worry about pace when that cold, just run on the treadmill or slow outside.

Good luck this weekend, most important, give it a great effort and have fun.

Well, looks like I'm gonna sit this one out too.  My daughter got sick Wed. night and I took her to Primary Childrens on Thurs.  After 8.5 hours in the ER they decided to keep us and they will be doing surgery today.  They don't know for sure what they will find till they get in there, but it could be real simple or quite complicated so I don't know how long we will be here.  By some stroke of a small miracle and we are able to leave tonight I guess I could get down there, but I doubt it and if I did, with the last two nights sleep, it doesn't say good things for the outcome!  Good Luck to everyone running and I'll be looking for those reports!!!!

Well, my daughter got through her surgery great, my huband brought me clothes, the computer a comb and a few other personal items to make my stay more comfortable. So now we are just "hang'n" here at the hospital and probably will be untill Monday. My husband did bring me my running clothes, so if things go well through the night and things aren't too stressfull in the morning (she has to have the wound/incision in her abd. packed in the a.m. that could be a little painful) I think that I might try for a little run. Can't have you all out racing your hearts out and me just sittling around! Like I have for the last 2 days and look forward to dong the next two days.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words, thoughts and prayers! So far so good! A few more days and we should be out of the tough spots, but we will have to do another surgery in a month or so. This kids a real trooper and also has had her fair share of surgeries before so she is rather experienced with the whole thing!

Well I'll be waiting patiently for the reports so I hope you all go and ROCK N' ROLL through PAINTERS!!! GO FBR RUNNERS!!!!

I entered the above last night, must have my days mixed up... Did manage to get out for a little run this A.M. I had no idea where to go so I just headed out randomly. Biffed it real good about three blocks into my run trying to stay off the busy roads and steep grass that bordered it, and decided I had better find a road with sidewalks. I headed up hill into the research park area around the UofU...not the best running spot but because it is Sat. all of the parking lots were pretty much empty and I just went randomly around from one to another. Not as long as I had hoped (needed another 10 miles to make the scheduled distance for the day...) But felt good to get out of that small liittle room and that was what I needed. Wished that I would have done more, but when I got back the MD was ready to do dressing changes and pack my daughters abd. wound so it worked out that I got back just in time! Hope the half went well, I'll just sit here and wait patiently to hear the outcome!!!

Maybe some of the SLC bloggies can give you some good routes to run around SLC for the next couple days. Looking forward now to the next race and chance to hang out!

From Bonnie on Sat, Jan 19, 2008 at 23:27:59

Michelle, If you go out from the main entrance of the hospital and make a left and then run about 1/2 mile or so until you get to a complicated intersection (with a left hand turn lane - you might see a sign that says "Fort Douglas") over to your left ... follow "Fort Douglas Dr." until it ends, turn left, at the stop sign turn right. This will be Chipeta Way, this will take you to Arapeen where you continue left. You will end up on Sunnyside Drive (which is also Emmigration Canyon) - if you make a left you can go as far up the canyon as you want - there is a bike lane and it is pretty safe. It sounds complicated, but it really isn't - you can't go wrong, just follow the foothills of the mountains and you can find your way back.

Please call if you want me to give you some other routes ... or if you need anything at all. I am going grocery shopping tomorrow, I can pick up anything you need ... or you can come with me if you need a break.

Yet another GOOSE EGG for me!!! I'm begining to wonder if I'll even know how to run if I ever get back out there! We are still at the hospital and I was going to get out and do some running today, but I really like to be here when the Doc's make rounds but that has been an all day process the last few days and I hate to leave because then I end up missing them when I leave the room. The med student rounds about 6:00 a.m. and then the resident comes between 7:00 a.m.- 10:00 and the the actual surgeon comes between 10:00a.m. untill 10:00 at night. Last night I waited untill around 1:00 a.m. when she was supposed to come by and then didn't see anyone untill this morning. I do the stairs every time I get something to eat, and try to add in extra sets of stairs when I dare leave long enough to stretch and get out of the room. I even did leg lifts and squats in the room yesterday but I'm sure that it's not enough to make up for the 3 square meals that I'm eating here due to lack of any other form of real entertainment!!! Hoping to maybe go home tomorrow, my body will thank me when I can get back on my regular shedule of running and eating better. Im not sure if I''ll even dare go near the scales when I do get back home. Jamie is doing pretty well, she feels good, but there have been complications and we may end up going home with a PIC line for some home I.V antibiotics and we will be doing wet dressing changes in her incision for up to a month and then more surgery..... hopefully things will heal sooner and we can get the next surgery done sooner and be over with this whole mess! At this point I don't really care just getting home and sleeping in an actual bed and getting to be out of this little room will be the best thing ever!!!

So I was out going for a quick walk to strech my legs and I saw a sign that said that if you walk the breeze way between Primary Childrens and the U of U 11 times that it equals 1 mile, so I hurried and walked the mile. I will get back later and do another one or two. I realize it's not running but it's better than nothing. Sure wish that I would have seen that sooner, but the other good news is that they finally decided no pic line and that we should be OTTA HERE tomorrow!!!

We made it home yesterday afternoon, and it is so nice to get back to a more normal routine! Jamie and I went to bed around 10:30 last night and I told her to yell if she needed a pain pill or anything...I got up to do the youngest ones hair and tell her goodbye before she went to school and went back to bed. Neither of us moved again untill 9:30 a.m. I think that we were both totally worn out!

Made one of my regular 5 mile routes, felt a little slow and sluggish, but it was good to be back out and I hope it will actually improve my energy level! Ran without music and planned out what was left of my day, I'm going to have to be a bit more organized now with a lot of things that my daughter is going to require over the next couple of weeks untill the next surgery. But I've got a plan for dinner and everything else through the run and so now I can just relax and get it done!!!

Thanks again to all you wonderful bloggies and your prayers and concern you guys are a great group of people with BIG hearts and kind words!!!

Had to runa little "cautiously" this morning, Mr.Jack Frost had his way with us last night and the sheet of ice covered with frost made things a little tricky! With the "splat" that I took last week in SLC, I'm not ready to go skating along face first again! So I just ran easy and carefully. Although it took me an hour to convince myself to get out there because it looked so cold with the blanket of frost all around it again wasn't too bad once I did, and very peaceful and beautiful too! Just glad it's Friday and I'm hoping for a nice quiet relaxing weekend to recharge a little before I have to head back to work on Sunday! (thinking about a long run tomorrow, depending on sleep and weather to try and catch up on some lost miles over the last week or so!) Hope everyone has a great weekend!!!

I almost didn't make it out today, but at the last minute before giving up and just taking a shower I willed myself out the door. It was soooo nice out, was able to dress down a bit and that felt really nice too! As for the run once again, it felt pretty hard? I can't figure it out, all of my runs except for one this week have really worked me over. Todays 7.7 felt more like about 12 but at least I got it in and hopefully next week things will feel a little better! Did love the weather and could really get used to that but I hear that we have a bit of a storm coming so I guess we just enjoy it while it lasts and look forward to spring when it decides to show up. I know that it's a little early to think about but we have got to start seeing a few of these nice days here and there as we are inching into Feb!!

Hey Michelle, My run today felt harder also, but was so enjoyable in the sun that it makes up for it!

Way to get out the door! That is usually the hardest part!

You finished up the week with some NICE mileage despite the rough start to your week- GREAT job! As always- you inspire me!

From Christi on Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 20:42:28

Hi Michelle! To answer your question I used to be quite a bit faster than Heather but she has caught me and I'm sure she could smoke me if she wanted to. I think a few factors sped her up: 1. she lost 20 lbs

2. she has been going to weight training class at gym 2x a week- her legs seem really strong and helps her w/ endurance running- she doesn't tire as easy

3. Lastly- what has helped BOTH of up speed up is running w/ faster people! About 1x a week we run w/ a group of seasoned gals who have all run Boston and they keep us on our toes

I think you are speedy! But if you want to get even faster maybe see if there's a faster person you can run with 1x a week. You may think you're slowing them down, but maybe it can be an easy run for them and a challenging run for you. Wish you lived closer, I'd drag you with us on our Sat. long runs!

From Bethany on Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 20:59:20

Great job today! Sounds like you exercised your will power too! (I can't tell if my legs or my will power benefits more from running) Your mileage is awesome this week. Hope you enjoy some easy time before work tomorrow.

From Lybi on Sat, Jan 26, 2008 at 21:57:01

Good job getting out. If you've had a little less energy this week, I bet it's because of all the stress you've been dealing with. It takes a toll! You're storing up running highs for your next race, though, with your determination.

Not the best way to start out the week, but anything today was bonus!  While I tried to sleep today the wind HOWLED outside!  I felt like one of the little pigs with the big bad wolf at my door!  I managed to get in two miles on the treadmill, and wasn't really hating it too bad when I realized that I was out of time and had to get ready to go to work and finish up getting things done with Jamie before I left.  I did get in a few abs, lunges and push ups too.  Although not the way I wanted to start the week, fairly succesful!

So I logged a big zero for yesterday, but I did make it out doors to run today, that was a major improvement. I kinda feel like the after effects of the last two weeks combined with the two night shifts and the miserable weather has seriously got me off track. Todays run although icey and a little hazerdous at times really made me feel better and hopefully I'm headed back on track. I hope to get a good run in tomorrow and then anything Friday will be bonus as we have to be to a doctor apt. at Primary's on Friday at 10:00 a.m. and I see there is yet another storm headed that way for then. Maybe a longer run on Sat. If I can hold that schedule through the week and then get back into my routine next week I'll be doing good!

Nice run today, I actually was feeling really good and pushed the pace, I thought a lot....  At the times that I checked the time on my ipod there were times that said in the 7 min. range (can't remeber the specifics) and then several in the 8 min range and then averaged in the 9 min. range, and felt good the whole time?  So when I got home and saw that my average pace was 9:5? something I was very disappointed.  I think that maybe it is giving me false info because one time that I had pushed the button and it told me I was in the 9:?? something range and 2 mins. later up to 12:?? and I KNOW that I didn't slow much if any.  So I still feel like this was a great run and that I pushed hard, but either way I'm not sure if I trust the info?

Maybe a garmin is in my future??

Comments
From Ribbie on Wed, Feb 06, 2008 at 07:41:17

I also run with the Nike+ ipod. I've tried to sync it up several times but it always seems to be off. I think it works if you run the same pace as you sync it at but if you run faster or slower then you start to get false readings. I really like using it though because the online challenges keep me motivated.

From Jody on Wed, Feb 06, 2008 at 09:26:00

Nice run today!! I have only had a couple of problems with my Nike+ipod, and the biggest was when I had to get a new foot pod after one month. The first couple runs were problematic but it is now working great. I would probably agree with everyone on the blog that the garmin is the best but it is also the biggest investment. Good Luck!

From Christi on Wed, Feb 06, 2008 at 10:02:37

Nice Run Michelle! I KNOW you are fast. When we ran together back in Oct. or whenever that was- you were fast then & I'm sure you've gotten way faster. I love my Garmin, got it on amazon for a pretty good deal- I don't have the heart monitor- just the 205 I think..

From Kim on Wed, Feb 06, 2008 at 12:14:07

I sometimes even doubt my Garmin. They all have little glitches now and then. But I love having it and think it is pretty reliable.

So you are either not marking your sleep hours or you are getting some really bad sleep time. You might have to join the sleep challenge.

From Lybi on Wed, Feb 06, 2008 at 13:18:56

I say just go by feel! If you were pushing the pace, I'm sure it was in the low 9's at least. Gadgets... Great job Michelle!

From Brent on Wed, Feb 06, 2008 at 20:54:37

Great job! I agree with the others: you can't always trust the gadgets, although the Garmin is great for calculating average pace. I'm not really one to talk, though: I am often too dependent on my Garmin.

From laura on Thu, Feb 07, 2008 at 10:43:14

Great run, Michelle!!! I agree about the watch not always being right. Even our garmin messes up occasionally. Sometimes when my husband downloads the information on the computer, it adjusts/corrects for the altitude. But awesome run either way!!!!!!

I haven't made it out yet but I'm going to try the blog now and committ to getting it done and run later approach today. So I hope to get in another nice 6-7 miles today, wish me luck!

Well I got it done! Seven miles! Average pace 9:35? I don't know what to think so I'm just not going to worry about it. I really don't think that the effort was as good as the other day but the pace was faster? I wonder if it has something to do with changing my sensor back and forth between different shoes, o well? Based on how I felt and effort today was still a good run and I may not have pushed as hard, I did get a good workout! Just glad to put some miles up on the board. Plan is to finish the week strong and then get back into my groove!!!

Chiristi- Jody- When is the spectrum 10k again? I am totally planning on the Striders half... we are just in such limbo with Jamies next surgery that I hate to pay up front for any races and then not be able to show? I don't know if I can sign up on race day for either, but I would be more than game for both if we are not enjoying the view of SLC from the white tower on the hill!!!

Brent- I'm not sure that I am back in full stride, bugt sure am working on it! St.George marathon??? I haven't really ever considered a marathon yet, I'm not sure if I'm that brave? (I know that I shouldn't admit that)

The sun came out today and it felt sooo nice! I had to take my jacket off about a half mile into the run. What a difference it made to see and FEEL the warmth of the sun. Even though the run wasn't easy, it was enjoyable. I should have went a little farther and made it six and more like seven that's just where I ended up when I got to the drive way. It's been a long exhausting week and I was ready to be done but still glad to have gotten out. The only bad thing about the run was the DOGS! Right now they are a four letter word in my book! Today I crossed five, yes FIVE pairs of dogs. By pairs I mean two at a time running towards me with teeth bared and ears back. Granted two of the pairs were the same that I met coming and going but still I feel like I had my fair share of the four legged creatures today! There are these two that I usually only encounter on Sats. (they must only get let out on Sat. or so I thought) but they were out yesterday and today. I still haven't bought me any pepper spray, but when if I start to carry some I know that I wouldn't hesitate to let them have a closer look!

TGIF and happy running everyone! I hope we all get to see this SUNSHINE through tomorrow!!!

Other peoples dogs scare me. Maybe if I had a couple unknown dogs on my tail I could pick up the pace. Some people really take a big risk by letting there dogs run free.

That would be a nice change and I'm so due to get out of the house and maybe relax a bit. Good for you Michelle. You get your super powers from the sun.

We had a gorgeous day too! But I'm afraid I took advantage of it by taking the kids to the park and ended up running on my treadmill tonight. My little 10 month old giggled the whole way to the park! She was so excited to get OUT of the house! It was really funny!!

Hope tomorrow stays great for you - whether or not you get a run in ... the sun in February is a boon to the soul!!!

Well I'm hoping to get out and run today after I get home from work and catch a few zzzz's.  I did something to my good hip last week on my TWO runs.  It's not the hip, just the muscle that wraps around the hip and it's so painfull.  Wed. It hurt to walk so I've just stayed away from the running.  It's still hurts, but I can't stand not running so I think I'll try a mile or two sometime today.

Last week was crazy terrible at our house.  For the crazy we spend Wed-Sat. going to the state 1A basketball tournament that my husband and I have 3 nephews combined playing on the same team.  They were pretty good and had a shot at it but ended up getting beat.  But the fun part about it was that the starting 5 players got to be flown back to New York today to be on Good Morning America because one of the players was in an accident when he was young and has only one arm.  It was fun to watch them and be with family for the weekend. But on Sat. we got some very heartbreaking news.  One of my husbands neices was diagnosed with a neuro blastoma (cancer)  she is a darling 16 month old, the family caboose.  The tumor right now is to large to operate and is wrapped around major vessels and near the heart.  We are all so sad.  I will be taking Jamie to Primary Childrens on Friday to see her doctor, that is where they are too.  I hope that if Jamie is having her next surgery soon that al least we will all be in the hospital together.  They have no idea when they will be going home.  They will start chemo this week and then operate when it shrinks.  Seems like we have just had one hard thing after another....

Michelle, I am so sorry! It is so sad that a little tiny one should suffer with cancer. Geez!

Also sorry about your hip--yeeeouch! Hope it heals quickly. Good luck with all the stuff you have going on--may things calm down soon...and STAY CALM!!! You deserve a break, for goodness sakes.

PS I am injured too, so we should hang out virtually and be injured together. :)

It's good to hear from you Michelle, but I am sad you have so many emotional things going on in your life right now. I am feeling quite the same way on lots of things going on with our families. I guess that is just how this life on earth is. I'm just happy there are rainbows at the end of a big thunder storm! I hope you will be seeing rainbows soon! :)

I taught a lesson on Endurance in RS yesterday- I was amazed at the stories shared by sisters in our ward- they have been through some amazing things and come out on top- I know we can too! One day at a time!

I actually did 2.3 yesterday, my body loved it and wanted more but the right hip area??  above the greater trochantor, it's muscle or tendon...soft tissue and it hurt a lot.  Today I have iced and used heat and IBU with minimal results.  I guess it's just pain and I can work through it but I want the best outcome to get it well the fastest.  Any suggestions of what it could be or what to do?  I don't think it's the IT band as it kinda wraps around the inside of the hip area??? It's got to be some kindof muscle strain?  I just want it gone YESTERDAY!!!

I am so sorry to hear about your niece. Little kids should not get cancer. I worked at PCMC about 5 years ago in the cancer unit. It was so sad to see all those sweet little kids. But, there couldn't be a better hospital out there for those kids. I am impressed with all you do, and still have time to run. Keep it up!

Beautiful day for a run.  I got two miles that were painful throughout!  I am so frustrated.  I survived the cold of winter and it's primo running conditions and I don't think that I can continue to do this to my body... I'm at work now and can barely walk.  The area around the hip is swollen it's terribly painful!  I hate to be taking time of right now, it seems that I run once a week and then think that I can get back out there and then I'm back to square one!  I should do something, I'm debating between P.T and chiro does anyone have any suggestions which would be better?  It involves the IT band and the surrounding muscles and I think that it's tightness and other stuff but I've iced and used heat and massaged and used the foam roller to stretch it out... where do I go frome here?

From Bethany on Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 21:42:53

From what I have heard/read from other IT band sufferers- stop running. Recover. I am so sorry to hear you are injured! Your dedication and running consistency kept me going through many a run. Hang in there!

From Mik'L on Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 21:54:00

Ah! I don't know what to tell you except that I've heard the same thing as Bethany, to just stop until it's better. Not a very nice thing though. I hope it gets better quick!

From josse on Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 22:10:42

I think you could benifit from both at this point. The chiro will help get the hip back in place and the pt will help rehab that injury. Sometime you can find a good pt or chiro that will do both.

From Lybi on Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 22:25:07

Uh-oh! I agree with Bethany. If it hurts that much, it is probably counterproductive to run. Is there some kind of cross-training you could do that doesn't aggravate it?

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

Walking.  I've had 2 sessions of physical therapy and 2 sessions with the chiro and the hip is feeling better.  I've walked 3 miles the last 2 days with no pain, just stiffness and tightness in the area.  Sat. when I was walking I ran about 30 steps and the pain came back so I quit.  I'm trying to be patient, but I'm soooo bad at it.  But I don't want to put myself back to square one so for now I will walk.  I was doing some gentle stretching today when I got home and my hip kinda gave in the direction in the stretch and I felt pain and a popping/tearing sensation (oops!)  It's not in the area that is the worst of the pain, there seems to be more than one area that hurts, but the one that popped today was in the area of least concern so I guess it could be worse.  So for now I guess that I'll keep to my walks and hopefully in the next week or so get back to running!

No running today just an update.  My hip is doing better but I'm still not running much.  Everyday I walk at least 3 miles and alternate it with a little running but although the pain is mainly gone, it swells up around Wed. or Thurs. each week so I don't dare push it too much.  Some days I'm actually walking in the mornings and evenings for a total of 6 miles a day, so I guess although the progress is slow, it is coming!!

Hey, Michelle!!! I haven't been checking on friends in so long!!! It's good to see that you're back to blogging and doing fairly well with your hip injury. I'm so glad!!!!! How is your daughter doing?

Way to keep up the activity during recovery. You're amazing, Michelle!!!!

Good job! You've been so patient! We don't have any of that here in our house! When will we see you again? It's been awhile. We still have your Painters sweatshirt!

Another 3.6 I should have ran yesterday but I'm afraid to push it. I don't get pain after I run I can just feel a little pressure in the area and it swells just slightly. I guess one of these days I'm just going to have to go for it and see what happens. I did do 20 mins of treading water in the pool yesterday. I'm hoping for 30-45 mins of that later today.

Farther than I've done in a while and hopefully I'll be back out tomorrow! I was watching an info-mercial (sp?)

last night at work, occupational hazard of nightshift work and I saw the one about barefoot science shoe inserts. Anyone ever heard of them? They are supposed to strenthen the feet and help with foot pain and proper alignment ect. ect. I'm usually not into that stuff but anyway I was just wondering if anyone has an opinion or knows anything about them?

good job gettnig a run in. I haven't heard about them myself. You can do it! Keep it up and you'll be logging super miles in no time.

From Lybi on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 23:47:54

What? That's interesting! Shoe inserts...hmmm. I bet they help lower the heel a bit. Running on the super-cushioned (and elevated) heel of a running shoe causes problems, I think.

Girls camp hike, not that far maybe 3 miles but rough steep hike so it's something.  They took it a little easy on the girls because my daughter Jamie was going so that she could join them.  I actually wouldn't have taken her if I would have know in advance how steep and hard it would be but we got her through it and I'm glad that she did it.  Isn't that how it is with most hard things in life....if we knew what we had to go through before hand we would probably say no thanks but are usually greatful for the challenges afterward!

From laura on Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 21:37:20

That's soooo true! I'm impressed she made it! I would've been helping my daughter so much, that I would've had to cough up a lung! ; ) Hope she's having/had fun at girls' camp. DId she stay the whole time?

From Kim on Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 12:51:39

How right you are about knowing beforehand! I would still say I do not like the hard things I've had to go through at all! But I do love the things I've learned and gained through my hard knocks and challenges! I guess we have 2 choices, either go through challenges and learn nothing and be bitter or go through them and be better in the end! Because I have learned that we don't get the option of no hardships.

So glad to see you on the blog a little more often again.

Sounds like you've been really busy. You've got a YW calling I take it? And Jamie needs surgery again- I know that is always tough for all of you! I will actually be in SLC area June 28- July 3rd. Maybe we can hookup for a run. I may be too busy but we can try. I'll be up there for work training and running my kids around to see some friends & relatives. Anyway when it gets closer let's exchange cell numbers again in case we can hook up!

From Michelle on Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 12:48:50

Christi that sounds good. I didn't catch that you got that new job but it sounds like you do. Hope it's working out well for you and the family.

I really don't have a YW calling but they had a couple cancel at the last minute for the 4th level hike and so I just went at the last minute, but was sure glad that I did. They had felt like it was very doable for Jamie so I wasn't worried about her going, but I just don't think people understand how difficult it is for her to get around. I would have felt terrible having her do that hike without me!

From Christi on Sat, Jun 21, 2008 at 21:17:11

Yeah- I got the job. I was spoiled for years working from home. Now I sympathize with all you moms who work out of the home and have to work around the kids! You're such a great mom to do the hike w/ Jamie!

Two miles walking tonight.  Jamie had another little surgery last week and we were in SLC through the weekend.  Ready to get some routine back but she is still requiring IV antibiotics every six hours and other care that is putting a cramp on much sleep ect.  sooo one day I'll get back to running!  She reminded me the other day that it has now been exactly one full year since this whole infection started.  Hope were almost done!  She is such a trooper just takes what ever challenge she is given and grins and bears it!
