Warning: Whining Wedensday:

Today at work seemed like a week, don't you just hate days when you think it should be close to end of day, and you look at the clock and you still have 3 hours! Then I decided to run trails because it's suposed to start raining tonight and not stop for 7 days! This means that the 30K Saturday will be in the rain. My run was painful from the start. Calves felt like they were going to explode when I was running up hill. Hip and shin hurt running down hill. And who was the sadist that thought up ice baths!! Holy cow that is not fun. But I will probably do it again and need more ice next time. How do I know if all this hurting is muscles or injury?  Last but not least my youngest son was hit by a car on his bike! Nothing broke but banged up pretty good.

OK that is enough.... silver lining. The rain will be good for the new trees and shrubs I planted last weekend. Trail running always is better then road running. Ice baths will (hopfully) make me feel better. My son is fine, it could have been so much worse.

GASP - Child being hit by bike... I am so glad to hear he is ok. Did you strangle the driver? I'm sure you'll get off on a justifiable insanity defense.

This is just my 2c and I hope you will feel free to totally disregard it, but I vote No on the ice baths. You've got some challenging stuff ahead, you are not "feeling good," and the cortisol levels are already probably whacked out without this punishing routine. I know, they help muscles that are inflamed. My opinion (and it's only that) is that the psychological strain of them outweighs the benefit, at least for now. Other bloggers will certainly disagree with me - that's fine. But my post run routine for you would be more like: dark chocolate, chamber music, and 20-30 minutes with a good book.

Sno, I was so upset with my son getting hit. If I had been there in person I would probably ended up in jail. When I finally saw him in person, it broke my heart to see my beautiful boy so banged up. At 19 they think the are bullet proof, but to mom's they will always be our babies.

I think I will try your post run routine, that has to make me feel better :)

Yikes. I'm glad your son is OK. That is really scary. I think I understand about you being upset with your son. I've got a 17-year-old boy myself and he really makes me crazy sometimes.

I've tried ice baths a couple of times and I can't really say whether they've been any help or not. I'm much more likely to take a nice relaxing hot bath after a long run. But maybe that's because most of my long runs lately have been in cold weather.

Just curious, Sno. Do ice baths do something with cortisol levels?

OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I am so glad he is OK. I am SO glad that you were not there to beat up the driver! HOLY CRAP!!!!

Pause... ice baths have magical healing powers. THEY SUCK, but they are good for all that ails your sweet legs :)
