My uncle, who's a chiopractor (whom I lovingly address as Quack-O-Practer) did pound and dangle my S1-5 region back into place and pronounced Bursitis of the Hip, a result of repetative motion and compression of S-4&5.  This explains why sitting in the car, sleeping on my side, and sitting on a hard chair continues to hurts me even though I can walk.  He also says I made a big mistake alternating the heat with the ice the days before the race.  I should have stuck with the ICE only.  He also insisted on an X-Ray to rule out stress fracture--since every woman in my family has suffered a broken hip by the age of 65 (which explains why I'm terrified of my own hips all the time).  So now I'm waiting on a referral to Dr. Skow (?) Given my long history of rotating inflamation-itis of every tendon and ligament a body can contain, this is probably inflamation of a Bursus Sac-- which would also explain why my leg won't turn right and feels like it has a wad of nervy tissue keeping my leg out of its socket.

Crap! or maybe this is good? What did he recommend? I am having very similar problems. I read your blog entries and think- "am i a hypo, or is Luzy describing my problem." I don't feel out of the socket, I just can't sleep on my side and when I stand up it kills. Walking and running is fine. I feel like I want to stretch it out. I want to massage it, but it is SO deep. I can get to the pain if I am sitting, somewhat reclined and use the pointy end of the tv remote. It totally went away when I was off running for 3 weeks in July. It's really bed when I get out of the car. Sorry to blab all over your blog, but do you have any ideas?

Mine only hurts WHEN I RUN, or sit, or lay on that side. And it's excrutiating when I stand up quickly. I'm ok to walk and stand. I'm now taking Naproxen (Aleve), icing every time I sit (in the car or at my desk), and I'm walking to keep it from getting stiff. If the pain does not go away in a week, I may take the suggested cortisone shots--but won't resume running more than 2-3 miles a day for many weeks to come. I still have not had the X-Ray, but stress fracture has now been ruled unlikely. If you have what I have, the idea is not to further inflame, damage, or irritate the site-- no heat, no deep stretching. I go for a massage on Saturday and I'll continue seeing my uncle (chiopracter) for a week before I resort to the cortisone. I'll report once I get the X-Ray. I've run thorugh and healed injury before by running less and slower. If it keeps getting worse and not better even after you've slowed it down, then you need to lay off for a while and walk, swim or bike for a few weeks. That's my plan.

The getting up quickly is a BEAST! I'll try the ice. I am all for skipping the cortisone shot! ALl shots for that matter.

hey, Ibuprofen causes me to retain water like no other, is the Aleve the same? Have you noticed water retention? I HATE water retention!!!

Will the massage bother it like deep stretching?

I was wondering if biking was aggravating it? I have been biking so much lately.

I'm new to Naproxen. It certainly helps the pain. I don't know about the water retention. But I'd try it, I just didnt' know about it. The massage will not be directed toward the damaged hip, but to all of the other muscles and ligaments in my legs, hips and lower back. Everything else is strained and overcompensating because of the damage. The massage in this case will probably be directed not to the actual damage, but surrounding tissue. But I'd take the therapists recommendation on this once I get there.

That is the hard thing. Everything else gets so irritated, and it is hard to know who the culprit is! :D Hang tough sister!!!
