I ran my first marathon as a teenager in 1981 with my Dad (The Coronado Marathon). Since then I've run St, George (3x) Utah Valley (3x) Ogden (1 full, 2 halves) Park City (1 x) Boston Marathon (1x) Washington DC (1x) Moab Half Marathon (6x) ,Ye Old Freedom Festival 5 & 10K (a million x) and many others.
But I'm all done with that now. I'm officially a jogger.
Alright- I am going to come and run with you and you can point out these beautiful sights. I am blinded by my lead legs.
Here is a web page that has some great stretches for the bum/hip "area" http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/sma/sma_xtrochan_art.htm
That stupid piriformis is somewhat of a ring leader and really can make everyone else hurt too. I actually prefer "half lord of the fishes" (yoga) for an excellent piriformis stretch. (hug the knee to chest with the opposite arm for the best bum stretch)
Awesome info Marion! However, sometimes it feels like stretching does more harm than good. It feels like I should leave the aggravated areas alone and just try to keep the swelling at bay (ibuprofen). That's the part I need to figure out. I know strength training may also be helpful to build up around/support the damaged area. Do come on down one of these mornings. We do have a beautiful place to run over here. It's the whole reason I live exactly where I do, and can't move away (as much as I might like to).
Yes- an injured area tends to be aggravated by over stretching, be ever so gentle. I use the stretching when I feel the twinges of injury are coming on. Although, the Doc, beat the crud out of my calf and it got better within about 12 hours. He put a chinese herbal patch on it too. I love eastern medicine!
Where do you live? I'm in Payson. I love the fields, 1.5 miles north west, and the canyon 1.5 miles south and a tid bit east. I feel like I have the best of the west ever so close to me :D
WOW, what a great attitude, you are amazing. I feel like such schmuck for being able to run and not wanting to somedays. Okay, no more taking it for granted.
Did you see that cute little swedish girl in the 100m hurdles. She was the only blonde and was the world champion and the favorite to win the race. She tripped on the first hurdle and went down, where she stayed the whole race. A few moments later they caught her chatting with someone on camera and she had a smile (albeit not a great one) but a smile on her face, and so signs of tears. My main thought was, "What a tough chick!" You kind of remind me of that right now :) Best of luck in your recovery,
