I managed a decent run on a treadmill in the hotel. Felt a little instability in the knee around the 1.38 mile mark but no big pain. Did quite a few stretches afterward.

1.30 in 17:00 at 13:05 burning 174 calories.
I managed to jog about 1.25 mi then had to walk a bit. Had hopes of picking back up after the walk break but the knee was emphatic that I should stop.

"Lateral knee pain in a long distance runner" is the current diagnosis attached to my medical problem at the moment. Dr. Nils Axelson didn't want to put anything more specific until the results of the upcoming MRI are received and evaluated. He's quite sure it is "persistent, non-responsive ITBS" but wants to rule out the very slight chance of torn cartilage. X-rays indicate my knees are healthy and well-formed. The only unusual feature is that my patella does not sit into the femur symmetrically but apparently that is not uncommon.
Feeling on my knee Dr. Axelson found swelling on the back of the knee. No pain when moving the patella up-and-down but definite pain when shifting it sideways.
I have a prescription for Mobic and am waiting to hear when I will have the MRI. Dr. Axelson told me "no running" until the pain was completely gone from everyday activities but assured me that if it was in fact persistent ITBS that I should be running again in the new year.
So I'm crossing my fingers.

I made my trip to the orthopaedist this morning in follow up to the MRI done on my left knee Dec 17th. As hoped there were no signs of damage to any connective or supportive tissues. The only note made by the radiologist was "nonspecific edema in lateral regions" which the doctor noted was his only guess as well. The doctor did show me how to identify exactly where the iliotibial band was on my knee so that I could better determine if the pain was from the band or elsewhere. Outside of that the only guidance was to stay on the anti-inflammatories as I ease back into running, try to run on a flat surface and go slow.
So that's where things stand. No real damage to the knee and after 3 months of not running I can start slow with dreams of being back to 5K by the early spring. *crosses fingers* |
