For the first time this week I managed to run slowly. All I had to do was take 3 little girls on bikes, and one small boy in a jogging stroller.

No run tomorrow, as I complete my taper into the half-marathon. It's unfortunate how this race occurs 9 days before the main event. Part of me wants to skip it entirely.

If you skip it, I will too...even though I clearly have nothing else coming up of importance.

You know, the more I think about it, the more sure I am. I'm out. Does anybody want an entry to the striders half? You can run on my bib.

From Kam on Thu, Apr 05, 2012 at 21:57:29 from 174.23.207.116

Tara, you should still run. You're still in a top 3 overall position.

From Kam on Thu, Apr 05, 2012 at 21:58:22 from 174.23.207.116

I just can't find any justification to do a 13 mile tempo run which will turn into a race effort 9 days before a marathon.

What was I thinking?

From Andy on Fri, Apr 06, 2012 at 10:33:39 from 159.212.71.25

If you run it at a reasonable pace (7:15/mile) you can recover well before the marathon. It is hard to go to a race and not race it, though.

Andy, is this your clever way of saying you want to go run on my bib? If so, then it's all yours. My confidence interval that I could keep things sane: extremely low

From Kam on Fri, Apr 06, 2012 at 10:44:28 from 68.66.163.179

If it was last week, I'd probably race it. But 9 days before? Some part of me is just screaming no.

From Andy on Fri, Apr 06, 2012 at 10:55:58 from 159.212.71.25

I think racing a half 9 days before the marathon would be tough. How important is placing in your age group at Striders? You have a 5 minute lead over the 4th place runner. You could run a 1:35-1:40 and stay in the top 3 of your age group (4th place ran 3:30 at Ogden last year). It all depends on how you are feeling now and how fast you think you can bounce back. Boston is the goal and you don't want to jeopardize that. How's that for conflicting advice?

From Tara on Fri, Apr 06, 2012 at 11:25:27 from 75.169.137.123

I sort of agree with Andy. I really do.

From Tara on Fri, Apr 06, 2012 at 11:28:59 from 75.169.137.123

I think if you can control yourself, you can hit two birds with one stone. A decent for Saturday (you are still 9 days out)and place in your age. IF you skip this one, do you think you will do the 18 miler. That does not sound too enticing.

From Kam on Fri, Apr 06, 2012 at 12:48:21 from 68.66.163.179

I don't know. It's a tough call. Placing in Striders matters far less to me than a difference of a minute or two at Boston. It'd be nice to do both, but I'm not in such great shape that I'm SURE I can go loaf through that 1/2 and not have it exact some kind of toll. I definitely wouldn't be doing 18 on Saturday. My taper plan calls out 5 milers every day this week. I guess I could skip today and run 13 tomorrow and be just a little bit over...

From Tara on Fri, Apr 06, 2012 at 14:57:13 from 75.169.137.123

Yeah, do it and use the last 4 or so miles at MP. I love watching the progression of this. BTW, I got a comp into the UVM marathon. Free race? Why not?

From Jake K on Fri, Apr 06, 2012 at 15:44:43 from 155.100.226.54

Its funny how we all justified running striders before Boston a month ago - but now that its really crunch time, I just couldn't find any way that it made sense anymore. Too much potential downside without enough upside for me.

From Tom Slick on Fri, Apr 06, 2012 at 17:05:29 from 69.171.160.2

I vote you blow off the 1/2 and save the equipment for the big show. It surly would be bad if you twisted an ankle or wrenched a knee 9 day before Boston and waste all that super training that you did to get to Boston!!!!
