HURT my right knee badly three weeks ago and had a hard stop in training. Did nothing but go to work on it painfully lots of 12 hour shifts. Had two fascia releases of surrounding muscles, two visits to the chiro, MRI and steroid injection Wednesday before race. I was not planning on running it but the steroid kicked in Friday after a very painful steroid flare the day of shot (shot was at 1230 pm) I was up all night wedndesday and thursday night (ok maybe total 4 hours sleep between both nights). steroids do that. but left me feeling like i had been running ragnar. way over tired but able to shut my brain off. Troy and I drove down to sg to our new trailer we bought and troy remodeled (kitchen and bathroom and painting other rooms). We had cleaning to do and organinizing. All thats left in this part of remodel is the counter tops which go in next week! So all day we cleaned the trailer on friday, i cleaned vents and vacumed and clean front door from years of red dirt blasts, base boards, closet clean out, drawer oranize, dusting light fixtures on ceilings and others. Got to expo at 6pm. Figured I would try to do the race and finish what i started. 30 years ago i ran my first marathon and it was this one so i had to show up and go easy, walk if had to but FINISH!. So i went incognito but ran into Jessica!! lol first person i ran into!! seriously!! I parked got out of my car and jessica with her husband driving calls our her window driving in front of my parked car!! so we walked in together and hung for a half hour! I felt so happy to see her. Later i bumped in to andrea who wanted to give me her shirt from white mountain revel race so i hung with her and we went to her car to get it. I went back in to use potty and i ran into Taunya!! so glad!! crazy tyring to be incognito but run into my trainning partner and my coworker ha ha. My back up plan was to stay with Andrea if all else failed.
Got on 435 am bus to start. Arrived just after five. Cold at start, expected as coolest race start in years. so i used the br and then sat by the fire. then potty again. had four protein pb balls and small banana at that time and on ucan gel just before race. I had four more in my pace around my waist. I wore my green lulu lemon shorts and des news tank and sg army tan long sleeve, head band and gloves. I removed gloves after three miles and put them hanging from my race band. My long sleeve shirt off before veyo and my head band off at half way.
The start was frightening. My knee immediately rebelled ( i had only walked 17.5 min avg pace for 4 miles sat, wog monday 11:50 pace and tues 10:27 (all four milers) and my knee after was super unhappy with the jogging so i hurried and got in to see the ortho PA wednesday and he did a joint analysis looking for pseuro gout and gave me a steroid shot)
The pain was sharp and ripped across laterally to my medial side where injection was so I ended up walking four times that mile. I also felt significant instablity medially, like a collasping chair. So i for sure thought i was a goner. I walked some more the next few miles and was eventually able to find a pace and leg position that didn't but my knee as much. Downhill was most painful so mile 16 i had to walk a few times. lol.. I took ibuprofen like it was gel. Two pills every 30-40 min for a total of 8!! seemed to do the trick as mile 23 i put in my music and was able to do a 8:10 mile then i switched songs and seemed to slow to 8:33 and last mile super distracted trying to find the right song- all slow songs came on (ihave a ipod shuffle and have never updated from when i first had songs put on two decades ago). I had no idea my overall time until the mile to go and saw i was at 3:52:5x?? and Iwas like no way I can't trust my knee to pick it up... if i did i may have to be carried to finish so I just kept same pace and accept no under four hour marathon. That wasn't my goal (it was to finish of course bc I am in shape for well under 3:30) but lol i made that my goal for that brief moment, it was fleeting bc it could not happen. i took my gels at 7 miles 13 miles 19 miles and 24 miles. I grabbed a giant piece of ice in the choc milk bin and met up with troy and iced my knee and legs every where until it all melted. So refreshing. I have no idea why my compensation for my right knee were all inner thigh. At one point both of my feet cramped up at dif times but really bad charly horses on the inner arches. My right upper calf was sore and a little in my thighs not much at all and both my hamstrings but really mild. Nothing like big c or any of my other marathons. I have run five marathons in 5.5 months!! 4/21 (3:40:31), 6/7 (3:33:57), 7/24 3:41:10), 9/13 (3:37:21) and 10/4. Two I was the pacer 7/24 and 9/13 but got injured at mile 13 but still finished at 3:37. And the other i hit a wall and had to walk like 18 times. Idk what happened there. I also walked 6/7 last six miles and 9/13 last 4 miles, with five min stop at mile 15 see entries.
I didn't realize i have had a hurt right knee since before 6/7. I read my entries and saw it in writing. It became worse in mid august and quite bad aug30th. and by september super guarded i should have never ran big c. i was supposed to race the half but i iknew my knee could not take that so i opted to pace the first half the the marathon- 3:20
anyway here are my easy very easy paces... it is acutally harder to run slow if it is slow for you bc there is no adrenaline rush the only adrenaline i got was music at mile 24 and pain jolts forcing me to slow if i tried to pick up
