AVG pace 7:54 for 15.1 miles.  Ran 4.8 mile warmup to the AF high school track at 8:08 pace then ran my scheduled gruesome 10 by 400 meters.  I am just not a track star in any way shape or form.  Wayyyyyy bad memories of my struggling teenage years.  No joke.  Anyway ran the first 5 clockwise and the last 5 counter clockwise.  Problem with a north/south outdoor track is headwind  (17 mph) is your friend either way but somehow it seemed more pronounced clockwise.  After the third one into the wind I was about to give up but decided to take my gu and some water and see if that helped.  I hadn't eaten breakfast and it was 1030am.  It seemed to help.  The repeats were done with a 400 meter recovery run.  I sure needed the recovery.  My heartrate is sooooo thankful.   Here are the splits:  86 sec (5:46), the first one is always soooo easy and too quick, my goal is 6 even, 89 sec (5:58), 91 (6:06)  did not take in the wind as my friend here, 89 (5:56), yay back from the abyss, 90 (6:00) GOAL : D, 90 (6:00) GOAL :D, 89 (5:56), 90 (6:00), 89 (5:59), 88 (5:53).  DONE!!!   What a "friendly" headwind!!  I just reached deep.  Funny I seemed to pick it up per garmin more so in the wind.  I could see my garmin go down on pace.  Its like a hill in a race, I go slower coming up to it.  Its a mental thing.   And then I push hard up the hill.  I should probably try the reverse.   I may be exerting too much energy this way.  AVG pace for 2.5 miles of SW = 5:58 : D     Glad I finished when I wanted to quit.  Ran home 5 miles at 7:53 avg pace.

Way to go! Track work is sooo hard to me and 6:00 pace does NOT feel good! You rocked this workout, especially with such a tornadic headwind!

nice workout today. wow! 400s (+wind) are tough.

quick question for you...what model of garmin do you have? i have the 405 and i swear it takes a good 1/4 mile to even respond to a pace change. it drives me crazy because i can never believe it. today i was running fast on a steep downhill and it said my pace was 7:48. no way, just no way. then i get to the bottom of the hill and slow down a bit and my pace suddenly goes to 6:20. very frustrating. just wondering if you ever have this issue? maybe i just have a dud of a watch?

april - does it drive you crazy? i would rather just use a cheap timex and pretend i am running the pace i think i am rather than looking at my garmin and having my running "moment" crushed :D

Allie, I have a garmin 510x. Golden at Runner's Corner tried out all the garmins he sells and this was the most accurate. It also can go under water. Do you have your watch on lap average pace? If you do it won't change the pace until you hit what you have your lap set for which is usually a mile. If you have it on average pace for the entire run it takes considerable time before the average comes down. I like both features but its hard to gage where you are at if you have it at total average pace. You can even choose both features to display at the same time-- current average and average for run. I am sure the 405 does that. I think that is what Melanie does with her watch. It IS such a bummer to kill the running moment with the garmin. I hate when my lap is halfway thru a downhill speed and my average pace is on instead of current. I am like "hey, I am running faster than that!!" and then it psyche me out if I don't realize I have the watch in that mode. I love it when it switches over to a new average when I have it in lap average after I hit a new mile, Voila a huge boost to my ego, YES I AM RUNNING as fast as I thought. thanks julie. that makes a lot of sense. i will see what i can figure out. it might mean that i have to dig out the instruction manual...

this is why i was so hesitant to convert to the garmin in the first place. i like simplicity.

i don't ever have that problem... it seems like when i look at my garmin (not often... i try not to look at it during the run; just after for my avg. pace, total distance, elevation, etc) that it shows my current pace as faster than what i feel i should be running. in reality i think that i'm finally getting a little quicker but i'm used to it showing a 10:00 pace or a little slower. i have a 205 and think it's pretty accurate for the most part. it shows my current pace on the main screen.

That is AWESOME 400s interval run in the wind and doing so many of them. I'd loose count. Excellent idea to run half clockwise and switch. Keeping track of 5 is easier. GOOD JOB on the SW and the mileage on a Monday! YOU ROCK!

Thanks for the Garmin Tutorial. I am still trying to decide which windows to have open at Boston...

I have the 305 and it seems fairly accurate although I hate looking at the current pace because it is all over the map.
