Just got back from St. George and got the kids to bed and got on a computer for the first time since leaving Friday afternoon.  So FINALLY  : D  I can write my report.  I went from feeling pretty crappy all week and continued all night before the race.  Even awoke with very stiff calves from my hill work the day before and was slightly concerned.   I got up at 6:30am and left the door at 7:10am to try and see the course.  I could only see five miles of it because the rest looped around a golf course a few times so wasn't sure about how it ended but felt confident the course wasn't too difficult.  Nothing like the hills  I have been running around here.  Anyway, picked up Melanie at her place and drove back to the start at 8:20am.  Parked a 1/2 mile from the start and ran a 2.1 mile warm up.  At first we were both very cold and thought "no way" to taking off our leggins' but after a mile warmup we were surprised as the sun came up how quickly we felt we could lose some clothing.  I changed out of my black tights at 8:35am and finished the warmup and luckily ran into Kim and Jane on their warm up.  Mel and I ran 2.1 miles at 8:13 AP.  Bathroom break and chatted til the start.  The start was right on time.  We basically were right down to the wire in time.  I turned on my iPod just before the race to hear the words "BATTERY LOW".  I was totally bummed, banking on adrenaline boost from my music.  Now I know why I accidentally left my iPod home last week when I did that long SW on the TM.  Time to break away from "music mode".  I ran the first two miles with music then paused it until mile 7 or so, at times turning it off to conserve battery power for the end.  I don't think it made a difference.  I felt great the whole time, even chatting with everyone I passed by, if they were sans music of course.  Here are my splits and brief dialogue, if any:

6:59 *only problem with the start was it was on time and I wasn't quite ready AND many runners that run slower stood at the line and I was back 6 seconds.  I literally had to pause at times in order to shuffle around the slower runners "blocking me".

6:58 feeling good.  Keeping it easy.  Just worried my tight calves and left leg might give me problems if I went too fast.

6:53  lost one of my lucky gloves (it has a picture of a girl runner and says "Runner Girl" on it).  Someone after the race told me they saw it and wondered who had time to place a glove on the ground in a "hang loose" sign.  Aren't I talented?  Took a gu just before this mile just for fun.

6:53.

6:55

7:00  Good but short uphill portion.  Aid station right at the base of this steep hill.

6:51.  Seriously I am thinking when will this get hard but still worried about picking it up so I figure I mightaswell stick with what works.

6:55

7:04 Steepest uphill portion and mile 9 is at the top of it and so is an aid station : D.  Took a gu just before this mile.  I took only two gus total and drank water at each aid station.

6:59

6:54

7:01  That uphill again (same as mile 6) but hey I am almost done.  Now where does this thing turn off to the finish?  I sure hope I don't miss it.  Passing lots of walkers/joggers that I am looping.  Hard to book it down a hill then turn sharply over bridges with others to worry about but not really causing much anxiety.  I feel great and decide to pick it up.

6:49  I sure hope I didn't pick it up too soon?  I couldn't see the finish line...turn, oh there it is...I guess its time to sprint to the finish.

0.1 miles at 6:22 pace.

I had my watch on pace mode so didn't realize my time so much but knew I was under 7 AP (6:55 to be exact : D).  Wish I had it in time mode.  I would have tried a little harder to get under 1:30.  I had it in me.  IN FACT I seriously could have run another 10 miles at 7 even pace.  No soreness, no notice that I even "raced" a half marathon yesterday.  I am beginning to think I just may be able to break three hours in the marathon in the near future.  I felt this pace was just under lactate threshold, which helped me feel so good the entire time.  I figure  if I keep training more wisely I can get there.   : DDDDD.  Totally happy with this race.  2nd master overall.  2nd in age category.   A cute 40 year old woman came in three minutes before me.  I guess if she can do it  I CAN.  I didn't know her.  She is from Salt Lake.  There were a lot of new faces at the race and a lot of people from the blog that I got to talk with  : DDDD.

Great race Julie, it looks like you showed a lot of under 40's women what 40+ women can do!!

Excellent race Julie!CONGRATS on your awards! It was fun to see you and chat a bit. I'm just in awe that this pace felt good to you - in my dreams! You are an excellent runner and I'm so glad you were able to get everything taken care of before the race so that you could have such a wonderful finish! I can't wait to see that sub 3!!

From seeaprilrun on Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 16:28:39 from 68.103.248.137

YES SUB-3 IS COMING! Wahoo! How wonderful to feel that good at that pace! Talk about remarkable consistent splits! With that good of a handle on pacing I bet you could nail a sub-3 and soon! St George? Sooner? I am in serious consideration of signing up for the St. George lottery so I can meet some Utah folks! Maybe we can break 3 together(it's a fun thought!?) Congratulations on a GREAT run! You have proven that it just keeps getting better after 40!

From JulieC on Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 17:58:06 from 67.41.191.111

Yes APRIL sign up for the lottery with ME!!! We can do it!! I really feel the key is comfortable pacing at trained paces, if that makes sense. I could have pushed it but what if I burnt out? It felt so nice to just keep it even and have energy stored up...I ran everywhere after that race, (up to the podium four times and to my car and all around the Dixie Center), no sign that I pushed it to the limit...PUKE zone is not in me. I am such a wimp. But a smart wimp nonetheless : D. now to wait your race's email updates next Sunday....

btw I am running the Utah Valley Marathon in June...there I plan for a 3:05- 3:07 if stupid things don't happen.

From Bec on Tue, Jan 25, 2011 at 23:45:24 from 71.199.12.198

I really admire you and your running abilities. I kept telling people all weekend that 40 year old ladies beat me by more than 4 minutes. Maybe there is still more hope for me to get faster. It was cool hanging out with you at the end while you ran up on the stage a dozen or so times to collect prizes.

From JulieC on Wed, Jan 26, 2011 at 09:49:17 from 67.41.191.111

Bec- Oh you will for sure SURPASS me. Do Not doubt it. Hey I was a little bit concerned that a 55+ year old placed in the top 10 at SGM with a 2:51-- Christine Kennedy !!! I tell myself she USED to run 2:20s so 2:50s are easy for her. Seriously? Arghh..I can't keep this up until then.....or could I?

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 27, 2011 at 20:04:49 from 71.219.84.215

You could have run 10 more miles???? WOW, you are AMAZING! You are such a fabulous runner, you train smart and just know what you are doing! You are beatin' the pants off all of the young ones!

WHAT is your running story? Wendy asked me after we talked to at the race. She figures you were some kind of collegiate athlete, but I had to tell her that I actually had NO IDEA!!! So, fill me in dear!!!

From JulieC on Thu, Jan 27, 2011 at 20:23:57 from 67.41.191.111

I ran from life when I was teen then I ran to life when I was an adult. Seriously, I only ran as a teenager for Field Hockey and Ski Team (cross-country and downhill) and then....two car accidents later, killing my father, sister (1982) and brother (1985) both due to drunk drivers I went in to a deep depression....I awoke about 5 years later after moving to Utah in 1987 and went to BYU and was baptized there on Campus 6 weeks after arriving. I then went into nursing school and began running for fun in local 5ks and then I got the notion to run a marathon after I graduated and qualify for Boston. I ran my first marathon-- St. George in 1995 and Boston in April 1996. I ran only three to four days a week in my training back then. Then I took a few years off from marathoning (but not exercise running), got married, had three kids and had brain surgery in 2004. Got fatter than I like so got serious again in 2006. Met wonderful running friends along the way and got a few to be as addicted as I. This of course is the condensed version. No, so not collegiate. But once qualified for the jr. olympics in cross-country skiing. Didn't get to go because senior-ity rules. I was a sophomore. The senior got to go even though I was faster. But that was long ago....

From Kelli on Thu, Jan 27, 2011 at 23:23:44 from 71.219.84.215

WOW, now that is a story! I will share it with Wendy when we run tomorrow. You have had quite the life. Why did you have brain surgery??

And, from that story, it is obvious you are just a natural born athlete---you try it, you excel!
