AM- 5.5 miles on the back 9, 2 shooting stars.

PM- Big Workout.  I was very, very happy to see some clouds blow in around noon- the temp was around 80 deg when I ran, cloudy, a bit breezy.  The best running conditions I have had in the afternoon since May.  Did 3 miles warmup, then 2 tempo miles (2nd was 6:10 with Paul on the track).  Saw Cody pushing his kids.  Then Paul and I started the workout- 6x1mi at LT pace (~5:45) with 300m rest (1:30-1:40).  Repeats went 5:44, 5:46, 5:45, 5:44.  At this point, I had to go to the bathroom so had an extended break, and Paul headed home.  After the stop, I warmed up a bit then did my last two- 5:45, 5:44.  I'm not sure if it was because my legs cooled down a bit, because I was running without Paul, because of some lingering fatigue from Saturday, or why, but number 5 was tough and number 6 was darn hard.  My legs were pooped by the end- absolutely tired.  Nevertheless, I was happy with the workout- very consistent for all 6 repeats, right at the correct pace.  I did 1.5 miles cooldown on the track than jogged 2 miles home.  Saw James Barnes for a minute on the way- he is here with some of his cross country kids at a camp.  Very glad to be done, very tired.  Now 3 easy days to recover before what promises to be a good race on Saturday.  Total 15.5 miles, 1:49:11 (7:02 avg).  Dinner then sleep.

I am amazed by the number of stars that you see. I guess I need to pay more attention.

August is the month with the biggest meteor shower- sometimes I'll see 40+ in 45 minutes. Though, I do run at 4 am when it is still pitch black out, I intentionally run away from streetlights so I can see more stars, I live in a relatively small town (i.e. less light pollution), and I sometimes run with my head pointed skywards. All combine to help me see more shooting stars than your normal runner could.

Running with your head up looking at the stars is why you run into the skunks on the pathway!

All I can say is WOW! Great workout.

This was a well-executed workout, Jon. I really look forward to seeing how you do on Saturday. I think you're really going to fly on the downhills.

Jon, I had a pacing question. This was on the track? Did you look at 200, 400, etc. splits? Or are you that much of a stud for nailing pace?

From Jon on Wed, Aug 06, 2008 at 21:23:01

Adam- yup, on the track. I looked at all my 400m splits. 400 was 1:22-1:26 for all 6 repeats, 800 was 2:50-2:52, 1200 was 4:18-4:19 (except the last one was 4:22). So there was some variability in there, usually on how fast I started. Paul said I started like a rabbit sometimes. But if I started a bit slower, I always evened it out by the 3rd lap, since all splits were within 1 second at that point. Kind of funny how even they were, I think.

But even if I wasn't on a track, I would have been that much of a stud at nailing splits ;) I'm that good- when you don't own a GPS, your internal speedometer has to be a highly calibrated, precision instrument.

Jon, That more more impressive. I think you've inspired me to get back to some track basics.

Nice work out! You looked dead when I saw you, but you are running great! Wish we had more time to visit.
