AM - 4 miles. Ran along the Yampa River trail in Steamboat Springs. Unfortunately I crashed hard around 40 minutes into the run and had to commandeer Andrea's bike; so she ran the rest of the way back to the start. I'm still struggling with the lingering illness and energy is very low after hardly eating for 5 days. I had planned on doing A LOT of running while we're in Colorado but I think I'll save my energy to have fun doing other stuff and re-visit running when the plague has been eradicated.

Great hike beyond Fish Creek Falls in the afternoon.

Dang, you really got crushed. This same thing (not even being able to finish a run) happened to me after a long-ish illness a couple years ago (which tragically coincided with a family vacation to Hawaii). Anyway, it did take a good 2-3 weeks to feel normal plus more time to get fitness back.

Have fun on the trip, and happy 4th to you and Andrea!

I think I remember you posting about that. Did you ever find out what was wrong? Obviously I don't have acute food poisoning as I originally thought.

I know it's going to take some time to bounce back. My fitness was near a low point to begin with, so I'm going to have to essentially start from square one when I feel better. I had my heart set on Chicago but that might be creating an unrealistic timeline now. In any case, I'll cross that bridge when I can get back to finishing a 60 minute run :-)

Happy 4th to you guys as well. I imagine that in Texas you blow stuff up and eat BBQ all day?

Geez, way to stereotype us. Actually, yeah, I just came home with a couple slabs of ribs and a hundred bucks worth of fireworks.

I think I thought it was low iron for awhile (actually Andrea suggested it) possibly brought on by summer running/sweating and lack of food for a week. So I did take in a lot of red meat and iron pills for awhile and it somewhat coincided with returning to full strength, 2-3 weeks later. So that might've been a possibility, but I recently had my ferritin level checked....it was 263. So unless my iron levels swing insanely over time (I guess it has been almost 2 years), it was probably just a super-strength-draining illness. That's the scientific term.

263?!?! I've never heard a runner say a number that high. Are you just chewing iron chips during the day at work?

It was a little surprising...I asked them if it was possible they left out a decimal point, but no.

Get well soon Jake.

Eat a lot! You're young so all it will probably take is one good meal and a good nights sleep and you'll be fine.

I was going to race tomorrow but Jon Kotter called tonight and asked me to do a long run with him so I agreed.

Ann's taking abby out to Magna for the 5k.

I'm winning the war on sleep, but I'm not quite at the point where eating a lot is a possibility yet... without causing a host of other problems that I won't go into on the blog. Think beet juice poisoning symptoms for a solid week straight!

Jake, Read earlier reports about the illness. I think what caught my eye was an entry about you cutting a run short or not feeling well - which totally threw me as I have never read anything like that before on your blog (other than an allergic reaction to some flowers during a race a year or so ago I guess). Sorry to hear the illness is still an issue. Hope you get better soon.

i hope this doesn't mean you had to skip out on the dash. someone has to run the dash! you might feel a bit better if you cut back to 2 elk smoothies/day.

seriously, i hope you feel better soon.

From Jake K on Fri, Jul 04, 2014 at 20:49:12 from 216.237.246.2

No dash. I would have had a hard time accelerating beyond 8:30 pace without my walking sticks. Jeremy Wariner unexpectedly showed up and won... 40.4, in trainers.

Sorry this week sucks so much with sickness. Sounds like no fun at all.
