AM - 10 miles.

I've decided I'm going to continue to lay low for a while. No harder workouts for the time being, and I probably won't race again until Duluth. Rather than the 1/2 champs being the "peak" race of the season, its going to be more of a rust-buster to see where I'm at, and hopefully a stepping stone towards some of my other goals for the year. This approach might not be totally necessary, but I don't want to fall into the same trap I did over the past month - pressing too much because an important target was approaching, and then get absolutely nowhere (or take a couple steps back). I'm just going to focus on building up my mileage and getting healthier... and in June I'll just see how fast I can run off primarily base training. An e-mail exchange with a friend from Saucony and some good talks w/ Andrea this week have reminded me that if I keep pressing for short-term goals, it will be hard to accomplish some of the other things I want to do. So, back to easy miles.

Such an incredibly smart plan Jake! Sometimes it is really hard to take a step back and look at the bigger picture but backing off now will definitely pay bigger dividends in the grand scheme of things.

Try not to forget that you won 1st place in two marathons in about a 6 month time span. That is such an incredible accomplishment and you will only continue to improve if you play the cards right.

If its a smart plan, its only because its a reaction to a failed plan :-) I haven't really been fully healthy (either physically, mentally, or both) since PF Changs, so I need to get those systems lined back up right or else I'll continue to dabble in mediocrity. I do continue to forget that I won that marathon in March... I keep saying "I've only had ONE good race this year!" and totally neglect that one. So thanks for the reminder!

Rob - bring it. I still get a 30 minute head start on you, so I should be able to hold you off unless you ride a bike...

This reminded me of some JK stuff I just read (it's been out there forever, but it's new to me) where he talks about long-term development and high mileage.

"several years of only moderately good performances might have to be faithfully endured in order to get to the highest possible level"

Delete that last comment, Jake! You are one of the smartest runners out there. Too many of us (myself included) push and push and push until we are broken down. OTQ is the goal, right? I have no doubt you will get it.

I spoke with Coach Dodge and his response was something like "I'd rather see Krong running, than not able to at all. He might just surprise himself in Duluth with plenty of strong runners to work with. As for the rumor about this photographic evidence of mud running, well, I think it's probably some PhotoShop-ed horse malarkey."

You gotta do what you think is best. It's easy to get mentally burned out, especially if you hit a plateau. But like Melody said, the OTQ is the ultimate goal and you have PLENTY of time to get there. But you have to get there healthy, both physically and mentally. You're going to be just fine.

Once you're ready to get rolling with hard workouts again, I'd suggest throwing in more 3k-5k paced workouts. I think that's the main ingredient you have been missing.
