Was ill all weekend. Missed my Saturday trail run. I've got to start increasing my weekly mileage. This year's Ultras and Marathons are approaching quickly. I missed registering for the Moab's Red Hot in February, but signed up for the Anteope Island Buffalo Run 50km on March 27th and the Ogden Marathon on May 25th.

Hey, I'm registered for Moab Red Hot 50K but probably won't be able to go. If you can convince them to let them transfer my entry to you, I'll willing. I had asked, but they said no. Perhaps you could convince them.

Great Morning for a trail run. Sunny and cold. I've gained an appreciation for ATV riders. They mash down the crusty snow. One section had no ATV tracks. Running through that section with 6" of crusty snow was exhausting, but it sure got my heart pumping. No other runners out this morning. I did pass a lady out walking with her dog "Sadie". As I approached, she said "Don't worry about her, she doesn't bother anybody", then as I passed she yelled excitedly "Sadie, come back here. SADIE, COME BACK". I just kept running hoping Sadie wouldn't bite me. I'm looking forward to next Saturday, first race in 2010.

Strider's Winter 5K Race Report

Learned some good lessons today!

  1. Make sure you get up when your alarm goes off.
  2. Make sure you have gas in the car.
  3. Make sure you know how to get to the starting line.

20 minutes after my alarm went off my wife asks "Aren't you racing today?" So I rushed to get out the door. Had to stop for gas. I almost remembered how to get to the starting line. After getting lost, I ended up arriving in the parking lot in time to hear "5-4-3-2-1-GO!", but this was as I opened my car door without my timing chip or race number on. I stuffed them into my pocket and saw everyone pass by me as I grabbed my gloves and water bottle and ran BACK to the starting line. The course is challenging for a road 5K. Mostly uphill for the first 2 miles. My time was 35:21. My Garmin time was 33:48. I started the Garmin at the starting line.

The run felt good. Legs, lungs, knees and feet all cooperated. My first race for 2010 is now in the books. Strider's Winter 10K in two weeks.

Ran seven more later in the day to keep my Saturday miles 10 minimum.

That has to be every runners night mare. Nice race anyway. Last year I read a race report that discribed this race as a 5K that feels like a 10K.

Striders Winter 10K - Cold, but beautiful, morning. Prefect running weather. This 10K has hills, lots of them. There were a few runners with a slightly faster pace than was comfortable and I tried to stay up with them. The last 1/2 mile I picked it up and could hear someone right on my heels, so it was a sprint to the end. I felt I ran well on a challenging course. Beat my 10K PR by 2 minutes and 11 seconds. All body parts cooperated.

Easy 2 mile warm-up and 2 mile cool down to meet my 10 mile minimum Saturday goal.

Middle daughter's wedding shower. Had to get out of the house. Seven miles South on the canal road, then did 3.3 miles of hill training. Up Perry Canyon following the 3 mile creek trail, then to the upper bench road and on to the summit with the old power pole, next mountain North of Grizzly Peak. 2200 feet of elevation gain in a mile, no trail, just going up the South face. Felt great, the first time I went up this face I could hardly go three steps without stopping, now I can power up to the top with few stops.

Striders Winter Series 10 mile race. The first 6 miles follow the 10k route, then the last 4 loop south and east of the Dee Events Center. Lots of hills. After the race a young guy thanked me for motivating him. He would run past me then walk and I would pass him. With a short distance to go, he passed me for good. He said he couldn't face losing to an old guy. It made me smile. Two weeks to go until the Antelope Island Buffalo Run, my first 50k of the year.

I love racing, even though this was a tough one for me. I had signed up for the 50k, but ended up doing the 25k. On Friday afternoon I met my friend Davy Crockett on Antlope Island. He planned to run 100 miles, doing the 50 mile Buffalo Run course twice. At 6:00pm he started his run. I crewed for him throughout the night, providing a mobile aid station every 3-5 miles. It was a clear, beautiful, but cold and windy night. He finished the first 50 miles a couple of minutes short of 10 hours (4:00am), after a couple of minutes he started runnng the second 50. I got in my car and slept until just before the start of the 50 mile race at 6:00am then prepared for my race. We started at 8:00am. I was tired, but the first 10 miles felt good. My quads then started cramping. At the Elephant Head aid station I took some s caps, ate and hydrated. A couple miles later my quads and calves severly cramped. I had to stop and rub them out. After that, I couldn't maintain any speed. Even through this I was loving the race. Special thanks to Jon Allen for encouraging me during and after the race. I made it to the finish line and was treated to Jim Skagg's (race director) buffalo stew. I enjoyed talking to new and old friends. Davy finished his 100 mile adventure a bit over 22 hours. Though nobody else attempted the 100 mile distance, Davy said it was great to come in first and set the course record. Great start to the weekend.

Jim, thanks for all the great help. You were amazing. Obviously, I couldn't have done it without you. Thanks for letting me drink all your Poweraid and so many of your Reeses bunnies. Ha, ha, Jun. I don't think I was rude to Jim once.

Nice job on a tough finish, Jim. I can't imagine trying to run an ultra after staying up all night crewing someone. It's a lot more tiring than you think to crew all night.

Davy- you may not have been rude to him, but you sure scared the living daylights out of him (per your race report). That has to count for something.

I finished the Ogden Marathon! Met all my goals except my target time. My goals were: 1. Finish, 2. Don't finish last, 3. Don't finish last in Age Group, 4. Set a new PR. 5. Under 6 hour finish.

My only other Marathon was 2009 Park City. I finished dead last. I beat that time by 31:31.2 so I was happy for the improvement.

Beautiful course, well organized race. Those of us at the back-of-the-pack got to 'enjoy' a pretty strong headwind while running down the canyon, at times almost negating the benefit of going downhill. I met my time goals for the first half, but slowed significantly from then on. I guess I'll just have to train harder/better for the next big race.

Thanks to friends Pam Daniels (1/2 marathon racer) and the legendary ultra runner Davy Crockett (3:23 finish) for waiting around and cheering me on at the finish. Davy came out and ran to the finish line with me.

I found a local 5k in Nashville. Ran 2 miles early am then left for the race. By the start time of 8:30am, the heat and humidity were horrible. Nice course entirely of rolling hills. The conditions really drained me, no speed. Fun race, but my time was slow even for me. Good news is I placed 3rd (of 8) in my AG. The men's and women's winners both said their times were over a minute slower than their usuals. I asked how people train in the south. The replies were early morning or after dark. One lady said this was her last race of the summer.

Hi Jim, I lived in Nashville for 7 years, it is tough to run there in the summer ... but you do adapt. One of the biggest races of the year is on 4th of July (5K) and it and another one in August are two of the most competitive 5Ks of the year!!

I am glad you got to meet some runners there, they are one of the nicest running communities I have ever lived!

This was my 3rd ultra marathon, 28 miles with 7261 feet of elevation gain/loss. The weather was perfect for running. I saw and greeted a few friends before the start, then we were off and running. The run up Dry Canyon was uneventful, everything felt good. The pack had spread out considerably by the first aid station and soon I was running alone, occasionally seeing others ahead of me. I came upon some snowy, and muddy, spots in the trail and at one point slipped and fell on my rear. After the initial jolt, I thought it felt quite nice to sit in the snow, so I lingered for a moment. I got to aid station #2, which is the starting point for the out and back to the summit of Mt. Logan. Jim Skaggs had just returned from the summit at that point. I started towards the summit and saw Ryan Lauck and later his wife, Lindsay. Near the summit a volunteer was checking runners in and he told me I was in 91st place (of 100 starters). After leaving him, I had 'snow encounter' #2. At the top of a snow covered slope, I slipped again. This time I landed and slid about 50 feet down the hillside. It was quite fun. The view from the summit was amazing, all of Cache Valley and the surrounding mountains were beautiful. I returned to the aid station still feeling great. Every hour I took an s-cap which kept the cramps away. I carried a hand-held 22 oz. bottle and another 22 oz. in my waist pack. This was plenty to get me from one aid station to the next. The next portion went around the north side of the mountain on a long, and a bit boring dirt road, but soon the course took a turn onto single track. It was quite technical and I had a blast running through the woods. Cool breezes offset the sunny day. I finally arrived at the last aid station, refilled my bottle and left for the finish. This was tough. All downhill and technical. My quads were screaming. With about 3 miles left, the cool breeze of the higher elevation was gone. It was hot and I was tired. Finally, the end was in sight and I ran to the finish line. 90th place with a really slow time, but I was happy with the completion of another ultra.

PR'd the 5K distance by 9 seconds. Perfect morning for a race. The age group was 45-59, so I didn't do well in the AG placing (considering I'm 53). There was another 'grey-hair' in front of me, so I kept as close to him as I could. He was 40-60 feet ahead of me for the first 2-1/2 miles. I figured I could catch him on the 'hill'. By the top I was about 7 feet behind him. We turned the corner and with about 500 yards to the finish I was able to pass him and could tell by the sound of his footsteps that he was not trying to catch back up. It felt great to PR. My wife was at the finish line cheering me on so that was an added bonus.

Great time running the inaugural N.U.T.S. (Northern Utah Trail Series) Trail 1/2 Marathon. Before the start we had a bit of rain. I saw some friends, Ryan and Lindsey Lauck and Jim Skaggs. I told Cody Draper, the eventual winner, that Jon Allen said to tell him that I would be his pacer today and to line up in front of him at the start, but then I took my normal place at the back of the pack. Perfect weather for running. While on the trail I met more great running friends. The trail had a lot more elevation than I had anticipated, but the last few miles to the finish were all downhill, so that was appreciated. There were still four runners on the trail behind me when I finished, but after I came through the timing crew took down their gear, so I don't know if I will be shown as the last finisher. Great event, nicely organized.

Run the Canal Road South, this direction has more hills.

During the last few miles of my race last saturday (where, once again, I finished in the top 95% of all finishers) I was focusing on staying upright and moving forward. I came to a fork in the trail and there was no ribbon marker. I stopped and looked around and it hit me. I know I will never set any speed records, I just love running in the woods. I'm in love with a sport in which I have no discernable talent. I looked at the trail marker and determined the direction to the finish and I was off and running. I made it to another finish line to the cheers of friends, old and new. So I wear my shirts proudly and train for the next race with dreams of finishing in the top 75%. What a great time.

I took a vacation day and drove to the Timpooneke trailhead to get a training run in. I summitted Mt. Timpanogos, 14.25 miles with 4800 feet of elevation gain/loss. Felt good through the whole run (with strategic walks). I passed quite a few hikers and they were surprized that an 'old guy' could run so much of the trail. It was a bit overcast which kept the heat down. On the run down, the skies opened up and 3/8" diameter hail pelted me. Dang, it hurt. I found refuge under a tall pine, just where you want to be during a thunder storm. I think I'm ready for Saturday (Crazy Bob's Bairgutsman). By doing this I also became one of the TURDS, a Facebook group started by Davy Crockett. To qualify one has to summit Mt. Timpanogos and finish an ultra-length race. The acronym represents 'Timpanogos Ultra Running Dudes'.

Second year running Bairgutsman. I got stuck behind a long line of slower runners on the first part of the single track. It took me 14 minutes longer to get up the hill (4800 feet of verticle) than last year. I made up seven minutes of that on miles 5-10.25, so I as happy with that. I had invited quite a few of the neighborhood runners to run the race, three of them took me up on it. We all had a great time. One of them, Lon Stevens, finished in 2:40:23, 33rd overall. This was his first trail race. There were thunder storms all around the area which cleared the air and cooled it down. By the 6:00 AM start, the storms were gone. The wet spring left us with many more short scrub oaks with their skin-tearing branches across the trail. My legs are pretty torn up. The motto of this race is appropriately "Conquer Thyself". It is definately an exercise in determination.

Don - Yes she said she was surprized that she was able to do it and she had fun. I think she had to focus on her footing and remaining upright that she forgot the 'running' part. It is a pretty trail along a creek and I'm sure that helped.

Running on Wolf Mountain was amazing. The N.U.T.S. folks were well organized with great volunteers. Picture perfect day. I fat fingered my Garmin at the start and didn't look at it until the aid station, still read all zeros, so I wasn't able to judge time/distance. The course for the 5K started with a ski lift ride. I was surprized that the trail had so many uphill climbs. As I approached the finish I saw 39+ minutes and I thought, well at least its not 40. Then I realized it was 39:58. With the Garmin working I know I could have pushed it a bit harder. Ended up 16th out of 34, 2nd in AG.

Later in the evening I hit the Three Mile Creek trail. My wife met me later and we power walked a 1-1/8 mile up the canyon and ran back down. 7 miles plus the race for 10.1 total. A great end to the day.

Box Elder County Fair 5K. 2 mile easy warm-up, registered and waited for the start. Good turn out with a lot of high school runners. I ran at, for me, a good pace with a decent kick at the end to keep from getting passed by the women's 50-59 AG winner. First place in the 50-59 AG, complete with ribbon and trophy. My wife asked if I was going to carry the trophy around all day and I told her I had considered it. Entry fee? Free. That was nice. Nicely run event.

Set a PR this morning at the Peach Days 10k in Brigham City, UT. My time was 1:04:38 which beat my old PR by 5:25. This was my 3rd 10k. The morning was brisk, or better yet downright cold. It was a good course for a road race. Nice mix of hills and flats. Before the race I heard one lady tell another it was 75% uphill which is hard to accomplish with a circuit course with the same start and finish line. I ran well and felt good through the entire race. I was able to visit with old running friends afterwards and met some new friends. Nice race.

Ran another 5 in the afternoon and my wife and I ran an easy 2.5 miles in the evening. She said she thought our run was what hell would be like, but she is getting faster and her endurance is increasing...and it was her idea to get out and run on the trail.

Peach Days was a fun race. Enough hills to make it interesting (meaning the hills annoyed the road runners)!

Nice race. You looked great when you passed me. To PR on this course is pretty impressive. Of the 5 10K courses I have run it is the second hardest only to the Striders 10K. In previous years I have heard runners clam that the course was all up hill. When I hear other runners make statements like that, I just know they don't know the course.

My wife and I 'hiked the Y' above the BYU campus. The trail is divided into 11 or 12 switchbacks. I would run up each section and run back to my wife to join in her power hike until we got to the next junction, then repeated this until we got to the top. It was a fun way to get hill repeats and a hike with my wife. We both ran back down to the car. As we were coming down I was amazed to see hikers going up the mountain with no water. Three additional miles later in the evening.

Yeah, but it was not a fun day for engineering. I saw Bruce Nelson today at the grocery store. He was riffed. I don't know if you knew him. He finished the 2010 Bear 100, this was his third attempt(35-1/2 hrs).

I'm running my first 50 miler next Friday. Davy Crockett's Pony Express in the Utah West Desert. I'm looking forward to it.

Firehouse 5k on Hill Air Force Base. I set a new 5k PR by 14 seconds. My wife Dawn and daughter Emily joined me for their first race ever. They both did very well. After finishing and catching my breath, I ran back to my wife and we did last bit to the finish together.

Reasons I love this race: 1) Its free! 2) Hill AFB has the only Popeye's Fried Chicken in the state of Utah and I don't have military ID. It's the only time each year I can get Popeye's. 3) The fire department sponsors the race and does a great job.

I was very excited for this race. My first attempt at 50 miles. Got to the start at 4:30am to cheer for the early 100 milers start at 5:00am. I met Maurine Lee and her sister Marsha. Maurine had agreed to share her race crew (Marsha) with me. We took the 50 miler early start at 6:00am. We had to use lights for the first hour, it was cold, so we were in long sleeves and gloves. The running felt great. Soon after sunrise, it got hot. Ditched the long-sleeves and gloves. Our pace was well matched. At Simpson Springs Station, Maurine got resupplied and back on the road a minute or so before me. I had trouble finding my S-caps. I returned to the road, but did not try to catch up with Maurine. I was feeling good, running at the pace I could maintain. I guess I wasn't paying enough attention because I stepped on a rock with my right foot and felt a 'pop' accomanied by sharp pain. That was about mile 19. I ran another mile to where Marsha was waiting. That mile was a debate on whether to continue. Since the pain was not subsiding and my left knee was complaining from favoring the right leg, I let judgement overcome pride and experienced my first DNF. RN Marsha iced and wrapped my foot and I became additional crew for Maurine. She is tough, finished in 13 hours 7 minutes. Davy Crockett won the 100 mile race, setting a new course record. It was a bitter/sweet day for me.

Jim, I know how hard a DNF is mentally and physically after all that preparation. (Happened in my last 50 mile attempt). I appreciated you joining my crew. Each time you ran out to me with the wet washcloth and ice it meant one more aid station passed. And I think running together the first 16 miles helped me more than I can say. I hope we can race together again.

From Jon on Wed, Oct 20, 2010 at 07:48:09 from 74.177.117.232

DNF's are always hard, but I think DNF's cause of a physical injury are easier to deal with than DNF's due to mental weakness. Don't worry, you'll bounce back and get your first 50 soon enough.

This is the first time I ran since I injured my foot at last week's Pony Express 50 miler. My wife and two of my daughters ran with me. This is a fun race in Mantua, UT. I assured my wife that the course was flat and it was...last year. The new course has hills, but we all finished and had a good time. I couldn't get any speed from my legs and had no spring from my right foot. I was very happy to be back running. I get grumpy when I can't run.

My third annual running of the First Dam Run 5k in Logan, Utah. Two years ago it was my first race. My wife and daughter, Emily, ran with me. I'm just getting over a bad cold and couldn't quite get the lungs full of air. I still had a good race, coming in 3rd in AG. My wife set a new 5k PR by over a minute (her third 5k).

In two years of running I've logged 2478 miles and completed 38 races (never came in first overall, but I've come in last overall twice). I've made many good friends and enjoyed dramatically improved health. Best yet is my wife started running with me a couple of months ago and is quickly becoming a 5k addict.

Thanks to all on this blog that have supported and encouraged me. 'Just Keep Running!'

5 miles combination of the canal road and neighborhood roads. It was dark by the time I got home from work and dressed for winter running. Lots of 'critter tracks' on the canal road. I got tired of high stepping through the snow on the canal road. I thought the surface streets would be better. They weren't. I got to gingerly run on the slippery ice, so back up to the canal road. I wore my new 'ninja' hood, it worked well, it is thin enough to breathe through and not be annoying.

5 miles on the canal road. Started running at dusk, saw 22 deer enroute, 21 alive and one in the dry canal that had fallen prey to a mountain lion. I saw big cat tracks on my run yesterday, but today when heading south on the way back after my turn-around point I saw mountain lion tracks on top of my northbound shoe prints. The course is hilly, but the roads were clear. 38 degrees at the starting line. I took 3rd in my AG. This was Dawn's 4th 5k, she just started running a few months ago and is progressing well. My mom walked the uphills, jogged the downhills and the last bit to the finish line. After I finished I went back to help my mom in.We all had a great time. We were traveling through Moab today and decided to go for a trail run.

Fun run right up to the point when I heard a scream followed by "I'm bleeding!". I'm so proud, my wife is an official trail runner, she suffered her first face plant. (she's ok now).

Wow, nice pics. Good to see she is alright. Also, I workout at the gym every Monday with one of your friends, John Peterson. We got to talking about trail running and he asked if I knew you.

Scott,

John and I were roommates for a while in college. Encourage him to run a trail race. In my 2011 schedule I have Moab's Red Hot 55k in Feb., Antelope Island Buffalo Run 50K in March, Ogden Marathon in May, Logan Peak Trail Run (28 mi) in June. Buffalo Run 25k would be a good starter trail race.

Wow, nice job to your wife!

In Albuquerque, NM for the BYU-UTEP game tomorrow. Though I detest treadmills, I did 8.5 miles between 0 to 6% grade. After riding in the car, I needed to run.

Ran 10.35 on the canal road south. Great morning run, 27 degrees, no wind. I was the only one running in the snow, about two inches of light powder. Just before dusk I did an easy 2.75 with my wife. It was her first venture out since her fall in Moab. She ended up with a concussion and has been a bit loopy since the fall.

Early morning run north on the canal road. Had to stay on the untracked 2 inches of powder. The rest was too icy. Very foggy morning.

Had a great Christmas, thanks. Now I can focus on getting in shape for the 2011 races.

Spent Tuesday night in Provo, UT. Awoke to 4" of slush. I ran 6.2 miles on the hotel treadmill. Yuck.

Ran 6.2 on the snowy canal road. Nice, but really cold. I was wearing my 'ninja' hood. It keeps my mouth and tongue from freezing, but my glasses keep getting foggy.

Davy Crockett is 34 hours into his 48 hour 'Across The Years' race in Arizona. 150 miles so far!

8.77 miles running south on the canal road. Today's run brings my total to 1325 miles for the year. I like having the week off work. I get to run more often and longer. Too bad nobody sponsors really slow runners. I could get used to this.
