 I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

My first marathon DNF, kind of sucks.  I thought that I could "fake" a full and now realize that my hip issues were just not up to the combination of speed and distance.  At least I was smart enough to stop before I caused real injury rather than just a really hard niggle that I need to get over.

I meet a lot of great folks today (Mike Kirk...very nice to meet you, Mike Chewar, from Jacksonville, Adam Braddock from Kentwood, WA) and saw lots of friends (Marlin, Rex, Shannon, Rex, Ron, Bill, Dan, etc.).   Mike and I decided to try to go fairly strong but not too hard for the first half then see what we had for the second half.  I ran most all of the first half solo and hit the 13.1 mile mark just under 1:17.  I knew today was going to be rough at mile 8 when my left glute and hammy started getting tight, then again at mile 12 when my hips started to hurt and get tight.  Right at the half mark a young guy passed me (went on to win in 2:35ish) and put about 1.5 minutes on me between there and when I dropped.  I ran up a small hill in Inkom and was only able to hit 8:15 pace at which point I knew I was done.  My friend Andrea was waiting in Inkom in her car to cheer us on (she has two stress fractures in her leg, is in a boot and couldn't run today) and I got a ride to the finish line to meet my family and get my gear.  Back to the hotel to soak in the hot tub then headed home.  A tough day, I know I did the right thing dropping (hard though) but probably should not have run in the first place.   A tough pill to swallow but I will learn from this (training, injury, etc) and run again another day.  Finished the day at 15.75 miles at 1:33.

Splits: 5:13, 5:43, 5:45, 5:50,5:45, 5:45, 5:54, 6:01 (first signs of issues), 6:04, 5:46, 5:57, 5:40, 6:21, 6:06, 6:33, 0.75M-5:15

Oh man, having to DNF stinks but it sounds like you definitely made the right call. I think listening to your body is tough for runners, especially in a race. I hope you feel better soon!

Very smart to call it quits. Difficult to do, but very smart when not doing so risks making an injury worse, and also risks not being able to run for months.

Sorry to hear about your hip problems but definitely did the right thing. Continuing and causing a injury would set you back longer. Now you can recover and get back out there sooner then be back in race shape in no time. Good luck on the recovery!

Sorry that the hip acted up during the race, but very smart move to pull the plug when you did. I was really hoping I'd read your post and see that you had taken the victory, but that's not important. Take care of yourself and you'll be back in top shape before you know it. Keep smiling. Sorry Jeff. Sucks to hit that first DNF when your suck a gamer. Get healed up. Sounds like you, Dave H, Steve H, and I all have something going on with the hip. I'd be interested to see how and what you do to correct the problem.

Smart move to drop, Jeff. It stinks that the hip gave you trouble, but pulling the plug before it was too late will probably allow you to bounce back quick. Look at Rob b/w Des News and TOU 1/2!
