Short-Term Running Goals:

Train for as solid a race in Boston 2011 as my schedule will allow.  Accept the fact that there isn't room in my life to train for a breakthrough performance and do the best I can under the circumstances.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Lose the all-or-nothing mentality and start using running as an outlet instead of an additional source of stress.

I'm married with 4 kids (2 boys, 2 girls) and live in Salt Lake City, where I work as a real estate attorney.

Let me have men about me that are fat,

Set PR (2:48:11) at Ogden to finish 7th, beating previous best of 2:53:25. Stayed with group of 5 for first 5 miles or so (on initial descent), but left them when pace dropped off of 6:30. Ran alone from mile 6 on. 1/2 packet Enervitene (w/H2O) around 1:00, 1:35, 2:00, 2:30; Powerade at every other aid station. Under 6:00 at 14, 18, 23. Blistered on ball of left foot. Doc in medical tent said midsole had broken down and that 300 was too much mileage on a shoe to use in a downhill marathon.

Jed - welcome to the blog. You have accidently entered your marathon on the wrong date - I've fixed it for you. Good job on the new PR. You have actually reached an equivalent of your short term goal - your time converts to about 2:45 in Boston. You also beat a guy (Bill Cobler) who has just broken 2:50 in Boston.

I wonder what the Doc would have said about some of my shoes - I've run downhill marathons in shoes with 3000 miles on them with no visible consequences. However, I can also run up the Squaw Peak road (5% grade) at 95% of my max heart rate, then down at the same heart rate, and then not feel sore. I would not recommend either one to others, though.

What was your split at the half, and at 20 miles?

Also, can you enter as much training as you rememeber or have logged somewhere else from the previous months? If you have a lot of it in electronic format, I might be able to help you load it into the blog automatically, depending on how clean the format is.

From Jed on Tue, May 09, 2006 at 08:37:04

Thanks, Sasha. My wife would love to hear that you're getting 3000+ miles out of your shoes while I'm barely getting 300--she'd cut my running budget from little to nothing.

I'll transfer my training log over the next week or so. I've been keeping a loose log on coolrunning.com. Is there an easy way to transfer that?

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 09, 2006 at 12:57:53

Does Coolrunning log have an export function?

From Jed on Tue, May 09, 2006 at 13:21:06

Yes, it does. I just downloaded the log to an Excel file. Where do I go from here?

Also, in response to your earlier question, regarding my splits, I was at 1:24:40 for the half. I'll check my Garmin for the 20-mile split when I get home tonight. With the exception of 3 sub-6 miles at 14, 18 and 23, my mile splits were between 6:18 and 6:35 throughout the race.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 09, 2006 at 22:22:55

You got a negative split. Very good!

Please e-mail me the Excel file to sasha at spammer go away (drop this, it to confuse spammer syphon bots) asksasha.com.

Easy 4 for first post-Ogden run. Soreness mainly confined to quads/IT bands. Left Garmin home but probably averaged 6:45.

Hi Jed,

Great Ogden race; you're well on your race to winning the 'Slam!

I was in a similar boat as you last year...I ran a terrible Top of Utah race in 2004, and decided to run the Grand Slam in 2005, figuring I'd eventually get it right (plus it sounded like a cool challenge). I ended up with 5 very solid marathons, including 2 PR performances and my first sub-2:30. But I've paid a heavy price...I've been injured off and on since mid last summer, something I have NEVER before had problems with in over 10 years of competitive running.

Congrats on your Ogden success, but BE CAREFUL if you're going to run the Slam that fast! Constantly monitor your body and back off those competitive urges during races. That was my biggest mistake and regret from last year.

All that being said, the Slam is a very cool event and I hope you enjoy it. I loved just being able to run all the courses in Utah and see some beautiful places. I particularly enjoyed Park City.

Best of luck!

Paul

Paul,

Thank you for kind words and good advice. I followed your success at the end of last year's Slam and was sad to read yesterday of the problems you've had over the past months. I really appreciate your cautionary advice and hope you're able to get healthy soon.

You race a marathon at 6:25, but then run 6:45 with sore quads, and call it easy? Was that a typo, or did you really go 6:45? If no typo, maybe you were ready to run faster, but a bit afraid?

From Jed on Wed, May 10, 2006 at 09:00:43

Sasha,

I meant to take it easy on the run, but I sort of got carried away. I didn't bring any timing device, though, and I could have misjudged my pace by 15-20 seconds. I don't think I held back at Ogden based on my training to that point, but I do think there's room for improvement.

Thanks for your comments.

Jed

Do you have a babyjogger and/or treadmill?

From Jed on Mon, May 15, 2006 at 08:54:17

We have a babyjogger, but it only holds one. No treadmill. This doesn't happen much, though.

23rd Loop 4, but ran into Ginger and ran ~2 miles at her pace. Soreness in right hamstring in location of old tear (1989) after run (none during), so stretched longer than normal.

Who is Ginger (sounds like she is fast if she gave you 2.66 fast miles)? Why only 5.66 miles today?

From Jed on Mon, May 15, 2006 at 13:22:40

Ginger is a friend from work who also runs. Actually, the 2 miles I ran with her were among the 3 I characterized as slow.

As for my mileage, the highest I've run in a week since starting marathons is about 60, so my mileage tends to be pretty low. In the 5 weeks between Moab and Ogden, my highest weekly mileage was about 45 (with a 20-mile long run). It worked so well that I was planning to follow a similar pattern leading up to SLC on June 3rd. What are your thoughts?

From Paul Petersen on Mon, May 19, 2008 at 17:18:42

Welcome to the blog Jed. Sounds like your on the same "year on, year off" plan I've been doing the last couple years. Here's to injury-free running! Just stay away from that Grand Slam.
