"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

AWESOME WEEK, especially Sunday, very impressive run!!! You are so ready for next week.

I think I am "screwed" (excuse my language). I have done zero trail running (aside from the horse trail) and my legs are SLUGGISH still. Oh well, whatever happens it is a PR so no pressure, right? And the weather is looking GOOD. Wait for me at the finish!?!?

From JD on Wed, Oct 13, 2010 at 15:29:12 from 70.96.78.157

Thanks Lysa and April.

Kelli - give me a break. Wait for you at the finish? You're recovering from an incredible marathon performance, thus the sluggish legs. By the time GV gets here your body will probably be the most fit it has ever been. Plus you have some mutant quality that allows you excel come race day. I'm an hour or two behind you next week. But you're right, it's a PR no matter what!

Did you just call me a mutant? I guess that is nicer than FREAK which is what my neighborhood (and my husband) calls me.

Honestly, though, I think this long of a race (and a first attempt at it) is a little too close to the marathon. I am still up a good 5 pounds (maybe 10 after the way I ate today and yesterday-dang food). That will slow me down, and I really am still very tired. But this one is for fun, so now worries. If I do good, GREAT. If I struggle, whatever! I will finish. Once again, I really have no confidence on this one but I am not in any way stressed about it, just excited.

You, on the other hand, are well trained and ready. You WILL MOST CERTAINLY NOT be 2 hours behind me. Didn't you say you were hoping for 9's??? What is your goal? Strategy? Are you sending any bags to the few and far between aide stations? If so, what are you putting in them?

From JD on Wed, Oct 13, 2010 at 22:36:20 from 209.183.51.47

I didn't say you were a mutant, just that you have a mutant quality that allows you to just absolutely dominate in your races. But yeah, this is more of a laid back run. I'm just going to make a day of it and enjoy the experience as much as possible. The web site says there are five aid stations along the course. Since the course is out and back there's actually 10 aid stations for the entire run. So about one every 3 miles. I might throw in another pair of shoes and leave it for the last half, in case the shoes I'm wearing aren't doing it for me. Other than that I'll just carry a few gu's, s-caps etc with me and take advantage of the aid stations if I get hungry. I was thinking I may not even carry a water bottle. But then I figured why not, it couldn't hurt. To me it seems like a really well supported, safe, relatively easy course for a first "ultra".
