8.2 miles - 2 miles warm up then the 10k...i was a participant, and for that i'm grateful. okay a little more race report: first off - i actually am really grateful to be healthy and have the will to participate in a road race - at 47 years of age i could be in a much different place physically and mentally, so i don't take my running hobby for granted. also i haven't been racing much since i started running "for real" these last several years, and in addition to not having a lot of natural speed (although i'm still having some denial about that), i haven't had a lot of practice pushing myself to the edge in terms of sustained pain and discomfort. my "A" goal was to hit a 7:15 per mile average today, but after the first mile realized that it just wasn't going to happen. my race today turned out being more of just a good solid workout for me, just like the 5k two weeks ago. i pretty much gave up after 4 miles. a lot of folks passed me in the final 2 miles - and i just didn't care. i need to find me some "competitive". i noticed that when i was approaching someone to pass, they would inevitably speed up to try and hold me off. for some reason, i don't have that sensibility. i wonder how much better i would do if i were more competitive. i did finish strong, and that felt good. i'm not sore, and i know that by running consistently i can get out for a few miles tomorrow no problem, and that's a great feeling. just wish i was faster. my hope is that by increasing my mileage this year, and racing a lot, i can get some pr's. now i have a 47:06 pr in the 10k to improve on. my splits for the race tell the ugly tale: 7:17, 7:34, 7:25, 7:32, 7:5o, 7:48, + .22@7:10 pace.
