"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

Short days at work are the next best thing to no work days.

Nice run today and look at your mileage for the year. Impressive.

Happy New Year!

WOW---NICE year in review. You have had an amazing running year for sure. Your miles are enviable, and you have stayed fairly healthy through all of them.

Now that you have all of that worked out, have you analyzed any of it? Like, what do you think is the difference/benefit of the high miles vs lower mile weeks? Sorry, I am always thinking!!! Your avg per day mileage is where I would like mine to be, but whenever i get there i fall apart physically. Just wondering what your thoughts are.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Holy cow - what a great year!! I am impressed that you can gather all those statistics too. The ones that struck me were the 57 days of no running AND a total of 2,654! You've been beating up those roads! Happy New Year, friend!

Thanks y'all!

April - my cold is hanging on. I don't get sick often so I'm trying not to complain. It'll pass.

Auntieem - yes, I'm amazed! I'm an old fart, and I jumped into the mileage relatively quickly (over an 18 month period). There were some close calls with niggling little injuries that could have just as easily blown up into major problems. This blog is a useful road map for navigating through injury issues though.

Kelli - I think consistent mileage makes a big difference in the long term. That being said, I think I was definitely over trained going into TOU last Fall. Being a rookie, I probably should have limited myself to 60 mile weeks and focused on more long runs earlier in the training cycle. As you had mentioned once, mileage IS an individual component for each runners personal success in the sport. There's a line, depending on where a runner is in his fitness, where running more miles will hurt rather than help the runners performance. No one formula can be right for all runners. The learning curve can be steep for new runners as we try to figure out what works best for us. That's what I love about running. Always more to learn, ways to improve ourselves.

Also in answer to your question Kelli, I think my mileage total for the year was appropriate, and I'll probably repeat it in 2010, but this time I'll spread the miles out more evenly throughout the year.

I need to do a lot more speed work.

From Kelli on Sun, Jan 03, 2010 at 13:13:32 from 71.219.96.112

This blog is great for going back and analyzing. I think you have done a great job this year and have learned from your running, so 2010 will be even better!

That mileage thing just has me constantly thinking and trying to find the best way to train smart (that and shoeless running, there was an article in the Parade portion of the newspaper today about it!) I have got to find the happy medium for myself, where I am getting enough miles but not falling apart the next week, that is a goal for the year I guess.
