"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

8 miles / 8:21 avg. from work to the h.s. track. 3 miles easy, then 4 x 1/4 mi. with a 1/4 rest in between. goal was 90 seconds, splits: 89. 88. 93, 87. i thought i'd better just do four reps since i haven't done any speed work for quite awhile. just getting my feet wet today. this felt really good and i'm looking forward to doing similar workouts once or twice a week now.

NICE 400's! I think you will do great easing into them, you obviously have not lost speed over the winter. Maybe you need to eat more candy and get fat like the rest of us (OK, like me!)

Did you see the women's record for the 50 miler on Antelope Island this year? Both the first and second place women beat the precious record. BUT first place beat it by over an hour! 6:55 for 50 miles!!! Freakin' amazing.

haha! thanks allie -

Kelli, we just "simulposted" comments on each others blogs. so, what is the difference between a 1/4 mile and a 400. i was doing quarters based on the garmin. i always forget if 400 meters are longer or shorter than the quarter mile.

pretty amazing performance at the 50 miler - i'll have to go take a look at the results.

It was impressive!

Call me stupid, I thought a 400 and .25 were the same.

From JD on Fri, Apr 06, 2012 at 14:20:30 from 70.96.78.149

yeah i don't know. i think they're slightly different distances. i just didn't want to take credit for running faster than i did if the case is that the 400 is longer. i guess i'll have to google it. people are laughing because i don't know the difference!

From JD on Fri, Apr 06, 2012 at 14:27:02 from 70.96.78.149

well it looks like 400 meters is just slightly short of a quarter mile. so a person's times might be a few seconds quicker running 400 meters. a 1600 meter run is like, 9 feet short of a mile or something. for a runner like me this difference is negligible - for a competitor racing these distances, the difference is probably HUGE.

I had NO IDEA! I have been doing speed work on the treadmill and DANG IT, I have apparently been running too far. But like I ever hit it exactly on the track either! In fact, I wear a garmin on the track and make sure I hit .25 or .5 before I officially stop my 400's and 800's. WHO KNEW?!?!
