"Engaging in a little suffering — however self-imposed, arbitrary and contrived — before breakfast each morning tends to demand some humility and injects some marked relief into the rest of the day, making things sharper, more inspired, more immediately aware of the powerful presence of being. And that seems really worthwhile." A. Krupicka

"I cruised down hills, churned up hills, and floated over the asphalt, existing in a world that seemed to lack the confinements of such ubiquitous rivets as time, obligation, or pain. I knew then that this was destined to be one of those serendipitous runs for which so many of
us strive yet so rarely achieve." J. Nevels

24 miles / 10:12 avg. Met some bloggers this morning for a run on Antelope Island. Jun, Dorsimus, Kelli (and Scott), and Brian (non-blog?). As we got started on the run we ran into a guy named Eric, who is on the blog, but not blogging much lately. Jun and crew (some additional runners joined up, but I don't know who they were) took off at a fast pace, so it was nice to start my run off with Eric. We ran up to a weather station (I don't know the names of the trails we were on today), about 3 miles, and that's where Eric turned to go back, I continued south and ended up making an 8.5 mile loop back to the car. I hadn't seen the group yet so I figured I'd run another loop and probably run into them somewhere along the way. About 13 or 14 miles in I found them so I turned around and ran back to the parking lot with the group. Kelli was nice enough to run with me for a bit and it really helped my pace. In fact I ran the second 12 miles of the day 2 minutes faster than the first 12 miles. We spent about 15-20 minutes at the parking lot ( I had 18 miles at this point, the rest of the crew were about a mile ahead of me with 19 miles) before continuing with a six mile loop. Knowing I would be slower, I went the opposite direction and met up with those guys as they came around the other way (good suggestion Jun, thanks). I felt really good at the end. In fact my fastest mile split was the last mile at 8:22. Mile 15 was an 8:29. My slowest mile was a 12:50 for mile 21. I've learned that for me and fueling, less is more, at least in the early stages of a run. I ate two gu's today, one at mile 16 and another around mile 21. For the fifty miler, I'll probably start fueling a little earlier and hopefully avoid emptying the tank. But for today's slow 24 miles, that was all I needed. I finished strong and felt good.

Antelope Island is a GREAT place to run. The trail was relatively soft, even sandy in places, and mostly smooth with some rocky sections thrown in. A great run. Good to meet for the first time Jun, Dorsimus, and Eric. Good to see Kelli and Scott again. Kelli brought some delicious "muffin tops" for after the run, yum, thanks Kelli! I saw Jim Skaggs (Ultrajim) who is directing the Buffalo Run, but I didn't get a chance to meet him. So many runners out today, I'm sure I crossed paths with several others from FRB, but haven't met. Perfect weather conditions; overcast, 50-ish degrees. It was great to run parts of the course for the 50 miler coming up in 3 weeks. The mt101's should work well for the race. Not including the break at mile 18, I ran for a little over 4 hours. A good solid trail run. I'm also pleased to have a long run two weeks in a row. I usually take two or three weeks (or much more) in between long runs.

I was so glad to see you today (both in the parking lot to start the day and later when we found you)! It was great to run and chat with you, thanks for putting up with my whining, it was a tough day. The end was GREAT----we kicked it into high gear which is always good at the end of a serious amount of torture.

Scott says I have to run 30 miles next weekend. I think he is wrong. What do you think?

From Burt on Sun, Mar 06, 2011 at 12:32:57 from 72.223.90.79

Awesome.

Scott is always right Kelli.

From Kelli on Sun, Mar 06, 2011 at 15:04:55 from 71.219.97.85

OK, Burt, then you come run 30 with him. That will solve my problems.

From JD on Sun, Mar 06, 2011 at 15:11:50 from 209.183.51.44

I was thinking the same thing Kelli. Would you be going on Saturday. I'm already trying to work out my schedule to get it done. Let me know of your plans. I discovered this weekend running with other people makes long runs a bit easier.

I think the trails makes long runs more fun!

From Kelli on Sun, Mar 06, 2011 at 18:04:45 from 71.219.97.85

Not sure when or HOW to get it done, I am going to have to think real hard about this. I am so tired right now....plus I technically did 30 last weekend, right?

JD that is AMAZING!! How fun to meet up with all of those other bloggers and have a great run! You are so strong and so awesome! Good job running almost a marathon today for some good "training" miles and some good "fun." What a memorable run.

From JD on Mon, Mar 07, 2011 at 19:50:32 from 209.183.51.133

True Kelli. Don't know if another 30 miler at this point will make any difference come race day. You're in excellent condition. The challenge for you will be a proper taper. Either way, you're going to do what you always do on race day: dominate! (I wish I had that quality). AND no matter what, it's going to be a whole lot of fun!

From Kelli on Tue, Mar 08, 2011 at 00:02:50 from 71.219.97.85

FUN, let's focus on the FUN. That will get us through at least the first 30, right????

I think I am going to call last week the end of my high mileage Saturdays....I think. I am FRIED. My legs need to recover.

From Dorsimus on Tue, Mar 08, 2011 at 15:32:54 from 75.162.153.11

Nice work out there, fun to meet you and chat for a bit on that last stretch! Love the island!
