AM: North side - 3 miles easy, averaged 8:44. Just enough to earn a bowl of cereal and get a good stretch in.

I like the idea of this workout from Competitor, but it doesn't invlove actual sandwiches and when you begin running half marathons substantially faster than you do your everyday pace (2+ minutes, say) a 6-mile tempo is extremely hard and probably a wasted race effort. I like the idea of running short but very hard at the end of workouts though. Trying to do more of it as I head into my 10k specific B2B block.

PM: 8.25 miles w/ Monumental Mile race. Didn't run hard enough in the middle. Split the last quarter long at 4:34 pace. I haven't closed many partials for longer distances that fast, even though I can. So good start in ~73, little Sasha sat on my shoulder lecturing me in the second and third (I'm teasing but also serious). This winter I ran a 5:25 in a 4 x 1 mile w/ 90 seconds rest, so this is a good PR. I think 400 was the longest I've run 5-minute pace and that was two weeks ago. I can run faster, and I will. Might touch this report up some but that's most of it.

My 1600 from freshmen PE was 9:15. So technically a ~4:14 PR :-)

Splits: 73.2, 77.6, 76.6, 74.4. I split the last one a bit long (but the course is certifed so it doesn't matter). When I kicked just before the final quarter I had 5:04 average and ended up at 4:58. Should have kicked ~150 meters sooner.

3.25 up w/ a bunch of strides (not long enough)

4 down (needed about 10 but the elites were starting. ~4:04 for the men and ~4:46 for the women)

Oh, I just noticed your race is TODAY. Figured it would be on the weekend. Good luck! My mile is on Monday, so tell me if you do anything dumb that I should not repeat.

From Jason D on Thu, Jun 05, 2014 at 11:38:46 from 24.1.80.94

Thanks. I'll see what I can do. I think the idea is to run very hard, but somewhat in control (until the end), and just try to ride the burn. I have no idea really. Weird day to race but there's been a break in the weather.

From what I've gathered over the years you have a pretty high top speed (under 4:00 on hard strides) so you might really suprise yourself.

From allie on Thu, Jun 05, 2014 at 11:53:50 from 161.38.221.168

looks like a fun and effective workout. but yeah, there should be real sandwiches involved.

good luck with the mile. "very hard but somewhat in control until the end" -- yes, yes. i think that is correct.

Sweet run/PR Jason. Definitely gives you a good time to start widdling (spell check changed that to waddling.. hmm) away from. Quite an intriguing distance.

From Jason D on Thu, Jun 05, 2014 at 21:02:15 from 24.1.80.94

Thanks, Allie. I'm thinking about starting the PBJ mile. Probably easier than beer.

Thanks, Matt. I think in the beginning I forgot I wasn't running a 5k :-) because I was a little bit under that effort early on (even though the pace was obviously faster). My legs started to lock a bit with only ~150 meters to go, so I probably wasn't that far off the correct effort. A sub-5:00 would have been nice and I was obviously going for it, but it doesn't make that much of a difference and it's not that fast in the grand scheme of running.

BUT I am pleased with how I ran overall. I'm not a miler and I haven't spent any real time running hard. I'm learning/teaching my body.

Mid to upper 70s but dry (~50% humidity, which was glorious). It's a good race distance, but you will feel like you want to do another workout segment after you catch your breath :-) It's strange but makes sense.

Great job Jason. I'm obviously no expert either, but I think it's pretty typical for the first and last quarters to be the fastest. Seems like a very well executed race, congrats!

From jtshad on Fri, Jun 06, 2014 at 06:56:35 from 141.221.191.225

Great job and congrats on the new and very solid PR!

From Jake K on Fri, Jun 06, 2014 at 08:26:59 from 159.212.71.69

Nice job Jason! I figured you'd be right around 5:00... if you did this again in a week you'd probably smash up that time. Good finish in that last quarter mile.

From Jason D on Fri, Jun 06, 2014 at 08:38:46 from 24.1.80.94

Thanks, gents. It was a really fun event. I just wish I could do this at least once a month.

Jake: I think unless it is very humid it is hard to warm up too much for the mile. You warned me! I think I needed ~4 up. I also needed to do ~2 x 200 under goal pace in addition to the strides or a quarter mile relatively fast (~5k pace). I was barely touching 5:0X at the peak of my strides and my warmup was very slow (9:00 average).

From allie on Fri, Jun 06, 2014 at 08:55:12 from 65.130.152.189

4:41 PR, haha. nice job.

it looks like you paced yourself well, and that 5:01 means you *have* to do it again. :)

i can't believe little sasha on your shoulder didn't whisper in your ear..."the shorter the race, the longer the warm up"

From Jake K on Fri, Jun 06, 2014 at 10:56:46 from 159.212.71.69

Yeah, long strides where you actually get into the race pace rhythm for longer than a few seconds are a good idea. 20+ seconds instead of the typical 8-10 seconds, with plenty of rest afterwards.

From Bret on Sat, Jun 07, 2014 at 10:51:27 from 66.194.206.214

I am a little late to the party - but nice job Jason. No doubt you have more speed in those legs for a much faster PR in the mile going forward. Well done!

From Jason D on Sat, Jun 07, 2014 at 14:56:04 from 24.1.80.94

Thanks, Bret. I do have more speed, just a matter of getting the rest of the system in line with them. I enjoyed it as probably my last race in Indianapolis (at least for a while).

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Jun 07, 2014 at 16:02:26 from 24.10.249.34

5:01! You've got some wheels.

From Jason D on Sat, Jun 07, 2014 at 20:50:04 from 24.1.80.94

Left a few seconds out there but not too many. I got to see a guy run 4:03. I think we need to start that petition for the Olympic mile as an event. Make it happen. Either that or start a blog competition for the Hoka mile, but I am guessing Jon Allen or Scott Keate would win. Not sure who else has them.

The winner was 4:03.8. Went through half in 1:58.

From Jake K on Sat, Jun 07, 2014 at 22:08:39 from 98.202.128.218

I'd put my money on Leo Manzano for the Hoka Mile, being that he already has an olympic 1500m silver :-)

From Jason D on Sun, Jun 08, 2014 at 11:55:16 from 24.1.80.94

Nope, blog only. It's very exclusive. It looks like Mike N. has a pair and given his leg speed for shorter distances, I have put my money on him.
