One of the many versions of my long run loop - 16.25 miles, averaged 6:57.

About 11 miles were what I have been calling marathon pace (6:30-6:59), but since that sounds silly two weeks out, we will say 4 since that's when I said "Okay, run 4 miles at or a bit faster than goal pace." Miles 1-3 dropped from 8:10 to 7:00 then, 4-10 were in the 6:50s, then the pushed it on the downhill to get some more downhill practice, so mile 11 was very fast MP @ 6:19, then pretty flat for 3 miles 6:36, 6:33, 6:31, then the last 2.25 around 7-7:10. Legs responded well, but they aren't quite ready for the marathon (thankfully because it's too soon).

Nice workout. Glad to hear your legs aren't ready yet! This time around I don't think I ever felt ready for 26 @ MP, but I could feel the taper kicking in the last week.

I'm sure you're all over it, but I'll throw in my 2 cents since I recently raced one...I think the challenge is going to be keeping the pace slow on the initial downhill in your race (something I couldn't seem to do). What never clicked with me in Boston is that just because it feels like an easy jog judging by HR/breathing, doesn't mean your legs feel the same way. The faster pace/turnover on your legs going downhill is what gets you, I think. Even as I was bonking, my aerobic system was not getting worked much at all. The legs just died. You seem to be a smarter racer than me though, I bet you run it perfectly. Just thought I'd share my experience - your course in Maine will be different obviously, but there are some similarities.

Thanks, Joe. I will keep you and Bam in mind. I ran too fast today. I think the idea in two weeks will be to make sure I get my feet under me and not say "6:30 feels easy, I can make up some time by running 10-15 seconds faster." The most time you can make up in the marathon is not dying at the end I think. I'll have no problem hitting 6:30s on the downhills, but I'm going to hold myself to 6:50ish for the first two miles. I'm excited and nervous about the downhills for the reasons you mention. I've run some steeper downhills in training but nothing quite as steep.

I want to be running with "this feels too slow" in my mind. Last marathon felt fast pretty much the whole time. Anyway. I think I'm not making much sense here. I appreciate the advice and will heed it.

I found that that feature of the blog can be a bit wacky when I saw "Jake K." under there one day.

Ah, you're one of those coaches, eh? "Dodge, pick up the pace. Did you leave your split shorts at home and wear your sister's underwear?" :-)
