Autumn River Run half marathon today. Won this race two years ago and wanted to get back to it ($250 for the winner is always a nice bonus and its usually not too fast of winning times). Either way, wanted to see what I could do and really more than anything just wanted to feel strong again, been feeling kind of run-down lately. Drove in to North Platte the night before and stayed in a hotel. Up at 4 for the 7:30 start for the usual pre-race routine. Goal was 1:18:XX, got really close to it and would have got it if not for the guy who won the full marathon. He was super nice, but he wanted to chat the whole way, so for the first 7 miles I obliged and chatted with him, but I ran out of steam after that and stayed on pace but probably paid for the first half of the race chatting. Weather was perfect, 45 degrees, overcast and light rain - might favorite conditions, went with arm warmers and no beanie, just hat. Splits:

1- 5:58

2 - 5:58 (11:56)

3- 6:09 (18:05)

4- 6:00 (24:05)

5- 5:45 (29:50, 5:58 pace)

6- 6:02 (35:52) 10k was around 37:00, turnaround was 39:30ish, right at 1:19 pace

7- 5:56 (41:48)

8- 6:04 (47:52)

9- 6:09 (54:01)

10- 6:01 (1:00:02) good split for the 10 mile mark, 6:00 flat, was wanting to finish with a sub 1:19 and should have, the course probably was accurate, but my watch said 13.17, so one of these splits was probably off and I actually didn't run a 19+ min final 5k

11- 6:01 (1:06:03)

12- 6:12 (1:12:15)

13- 5:53 (1:18:08)

.1 - :57?

Total was 1:19:04, not sure which of these splits was off, but I think the course was pretty close to accurate, the 13.17 on my watch was probably cuz I didn't run the tangents perfect, so I'll assume it was 1:19 for the HM and if the course was long, then I broke 1:19 again! Won the race by 5 minutes and won the $250, always nice to win some prize money :) cooled down for 2 miles, 17 total on the day. I do love this race and the fall weather was awesome!

Congrats on the win and payout!

If it was a certified course, there's a good chance it is more accurate than your watch. 13.17 sounds about right. If I am running with average pace I always know I am going to pay the tangent tax so try to be ahead of goal pace (particularly true for a marathon).

Thank you! I like the "tangent tax" metaphor, very relevant!
