1 mile warm up at the race finish. Then caught one of the last buses up. (Precision 339.2)

At the start line, warmed up just a little more (.3) and got ready to go. All the usual suspects were around and Clyde told me that a strong UVSC runner was around who had just run 15 flat 5000 on the track last week. We took off and Nick, UVSC, Clyde and I settled into a strong pace and worked around Jose, who was doing his usual thing, after a few minutes. I wanted a 4:40 first mile and hoped I could hold onto to something after that. 1-4:40, exactly what I wanted. Although it didn't seem like I was working hard, it was fast and my legs and mind started to pay on the second mile. 2-5:10, This mile was exactly where I wanted it as well, but Clyde tested me and pulled away by about 5 seconds or so here (Kind of unusual for him to push it hard after a hard mile 1). 3-5:10 again. I knew the third mile had to pick back up to sub 5, but I don't know I just didn't feel like it was all there. I did notice nick break the UVSC guy and thought that we would actually go around him, but he ended up settling back in and running solid. Clyde gained another few seconds here. 4-5:24 Up through the first neighborhood. I needed a 5:16 here and I lost a few. I tried to gain a few seconds on Clyde, but then he regained them on the down out of the neighborhood. I kind of resigned myself to the thought that I wouldn't catch him. 5-5:32 This should have been where I caught Clyde, but I think we were both in hard cruise/survive mode for this mile. At the end of this mile Nick and UVSC missed a turn and ended up cutting 2/3's? a mile off the race, which was kind of a bummer. 6-5:27 I had a little surge that gained me a second or two on Clyde, but then I lost the feel for it and settled again. But on the downhill out of the second neighborhood, I decided to try and give it one more push. As I did, I quickly began eating up ground on Clyde. 6.2-1:10 (5:58 pace) Coming off the roundabout, I was only 2 seconds behind him, but just then at about the mile marker, Clyde surged it and I didn't have it go with him and I just let him pull back away and I had a very slow finish.

I went back and cooled down for 3.05 as I ran back to Ally and ran in with her. This was her first 10K and she did great!

I don't know what to take from this race. I felt that it was a good workout and a decent run, but I don't feel any more ready for Salt Lake than I had before. I don't feel fast at all and am a little disappointed with the time. I guess I just need to stick to the plan and let the mileage be at 100 and no more, and get some solid 800's and 1200's in over the next few weeks. Maybe that will get the leg turnover going and some positive things moving for me. (Ohana -9.05 - these shoes are shot. They have been great, but they are done. I got a rock in my shoe right at the start, and it developed a very strong blister by the end of the race.

Nice run today! Thanks for coming back to run with me. That sure did help me a lot! I bet it was a very nice, slooow cool down for you!

From Jon on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 13:39:12

32:35??? Wow, awesome! Sounds like you really pushed yourself and had a great time. You'll be ready for SLC, no worries.

From JohnK on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 13:40:49

Dave, considering you ran close to 80 miles Mon.-Thurs. today's race seems like a pretty strong showing. Even taking it easy yesterday you couldn't have been well rested, so you ran tough given the heavy mileage.

From Jon on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 13:45:45

Hey, where is the spectrum anyways?

From Christi on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 13:47:35

Great job today! I'm sure you'll do AWESOME at the SLC Marathon!

From MarcieJ on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 14:19:04

Dave you are amazing! What a great time. You are going to rock it at SL marathon! sorry about the blister from the rock, thats a bummer

From Superfly on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 14:30:44

Way to keep pushing me the WHOLE race. I know that with the volume and training we've got some good things coming. So if you run a 2:25 at SLC then it's like I ran a 2:25 and if I run a 2:24 at Ogden then it's like you ran a 2:24...Winter Crest on the hip? That smells good.

From Cody on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 14:40:48

Great race. Way to hang in there and give Clyde a scare. Take the rock out of the shoe and throw it at him. Good Job!

From Mike Warren on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 15:13:21

Dave, you know you are getting CRAZY good, when you not that thrilled with a 32! Your kinda tough on yourself. You had a great race even with the tired legs. SLC, watch out!

From George on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 15:40:40

I agree with most of the comments above - you need to take this race in the context of the broader picture of your training. 32 in the middle of a 90+ week and a post a 400 mile + month with little anaerobic work? Well done. Keep to the plan and it will swing together even more nicely than today.

From Mik'L on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 17:37:00

Good job today. I'm glad you and Clyde have each other to push each other. Clyde is really hoping you do awesome at SL and that will make him feel okay about Ogden. haha I have some funny pics of you and Clyde at the finish.

From James on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 17:46:46

Dave,

It sounds like you ran great again to me! You are way ahead of where you were last year and look how that ended up.

From James on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 17:49:17

Did you get a hair cut?

From dave holt on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 17:56:38

Thanks everybody - I guess I have always been my own harshest critic. It will come around I know it, but I am just impatient.

Mik'L - I am worried about any pic you say is funny.

James - It was time for a change, yes. The kids cut it the other day at school into a masterful mullet, but then I had the chop job cleaned up into something missionariy appropriate!

From James on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 18:01:49

I just noticed the blog name had a good chuckle over it. Good times!

Great run Dave. Keep up the hard work, I look forward to what you are going to do in 5-wks.

From Little Bad Legs on Sat, Mar 15, 2008 at 21:42:07

Awesome race Dave. SLC is going to be a great race for you! Keep it up.

From Dustin on Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 00:08:38

Great race today Dave. Keep up the hard work. Also the mullet looks was very impressive the other day. Did any of the pictures turn out?

From ryan on Sun, Mar 16, 2008 at 19:39:14

sounds like everyone but you thinks you had a great race. i know that you have high expectations and you should. i think that you are doing great things in your training and racing. you'll find your own recipe for greater success as you push on. for whatever it is worth, i think you have a great base and if you incorporate a solid tempo and a solid track workout in each week you'll find another gear.

logan is running great right now. if you look at his training he is running tempos at 5:20ish and his track work outs all seem to be in the 4:35ish-5:00ish pace depending on whether it is 400m repeats or 2000m. if we want to run faster then we have to spend a little time running FAST rather than running more miles. if track workouts every week hammer you to much then find a hill like formaster hill and run repeats. you might only be running 6:00 pace but it will feel like 5:00 without the pounding. you'll build lung power and leg power at the same time. these are just some of my random thoughts and things i am going to try to do in my training. also listen to the still small voice, aka,the aches and pains that signal that we need to back off to avoid injury. If i had to choose between being over trained or undertrained, i would choose to be undertrained. good luck.

Wow, great race Dave. Not much more to say than what already has. You are going to smoke SLC. That is an amazing time off a long week of mileage!
