Short-Term Running Goals:

-Qualify for the 2024 Olympic marathon trials

Long-Term Running Goals:

-Run a few fast marathons. Grandma's, St. George, and Boston are on my target list. An Olympic Trials qualifier would be amazing.

-Break stroller records?

-Stay fit for a very long time. I believe what goes into making a competitive runner at age 60 is much different than age 20, just like what goes into making a good marathoner differs from a good sprinter. I hope that by taking care of my body, I can be very fast for my age as I get older.

Personal:

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I served a mission in Rome, Italy from 2015 to 2017. I eat a whole food, plant-based diet, which I believe helps my running. I like chocolate shakes on sunday nights and I will always call the Pacific northwest home.

Workout today. 3 by 2 mile at intramural. Wheel took 20+ seconds onto our time compared to watches. Oh well. I ran 10:13, 10:13, then coach had us run one mile (4:56), sit an 800 out, and then finish the last 8 (2:25). That felt like a jog. It wasn't a breakout workout, but nor was it terrible. Felt great to be back on it.

PM: I ended up doing 12 miles. It was entertaining to watch the workout. I think I will enjoy being a coach someday.

We did mile-1200-800 *2, but coach had those of us who don’t have a spot locked down for pre-nats Run just one set. I wish I could say it was easy but it wasn’t. I started feeling hot in my hamstrings from the speed. My speed isn’t quite there yet. But I think if I had let the pack go by a second or two that I could have done another set. I ran 4:48, 3:26 and then 2:12 on the track.

First race in a BYU uniform! It was a perfect way to do it, at home on a beautiful fall day in Oregon with my family cheering me on, just like old times. The race was pretty physical and pushy at the beginning. I never saw anyone fall but I came pretty close. I decided last night to try to work on what happened last time and go the first lap, with after I got settled in just allowing myself to relax and be ok maintaining position or even getting passed. I didn't do a perfect job of that, as evidenced by a first mile that I think was about 4:45 or faster, but I was better than last time. I also would like to be more patient and not just pass people because I (barely) can a mile in. I will be able to use that energy more productively later in the race. Overall though I still felt like I was able to push it the whole race and finish strong the last 200 (another improvement from last race). 24:38 was my time, 60th place out of about 140 I think. There were good teams there. We didn't do as well as a team as we had hoped, but hopefully we can do better. Idk if I will be there, I was 12th on the team and we have a guy coming back from injury who might take my place at pre-nats. We will see. Great day overall, solid performance.
