This was a last minute decision to run luckily I know the race director and he hooked me up with a last minute entry without a hitch. Got up a little late and made it to the buses just barely in time. As I climbed aboard I saw Lynette, Jeff, Justin and Marlin so it was almost like any other Saturday run. Warmed up a little and talked to Jeff about how we were going to go out. I had in mind that I wanted the first six all under 6:00 pace. 1-5:00 2-5:32 3-5:34 4-5:21 5-5:40 6-5:51 then came the longer flat part I was trying to keep these all under control but I really didn't have any clue of what type of shape I was in and how long I could hold a decent pace. 7-6:11 8-6:12 around 8.5 I hit the water station to wet my mouth and Jeff threw a little surge at me and that was all it took for him to lose me 9-6:17 10-6:27 I slid a little here and got passed by a high school senior (dang kids) 11-6:28 12:6:29 Started gaining back on second place just ran out of space 13-6:09. Miles 10-12 are what really cost me here probably should have been somewhere in the 1:16 range but lack of preparation and mileage showed up (I was expecting it) but it gave me a good basis of my current fitness level is and that's why I ran today. Great overall performance by the group. Little Shadley (Justin) 1:29 and new PR (going to have to watch out for him pretty soon) Lynette 1:27 new PR, Jeff 1:15 overall winner.
Great to run over half with a great friend and mentor, Jeff Shadley, who still teaches me things each race. Days like today make me wonder if I don't push myself hard enough and embrace the hurt like I should on race day to stay up with him.
