2019 Running Schedule

Feb - Mesa Phoenix Marathon (AZ): 2:37:45. Lingering flu didn't help, but I still got a PR.

April - Bonneville Shoreline Trail Marathon (UT). Mostly just going to be a training run. Finally got myself into the sub-4 club last year, so I'll just have fun with it this year.

May - Stillwater Half Marathon (MN). Goal race for Spring. Looking for ~1:12.

October- Chicago Marathon (IL). We'll see where I'm at in Fall, but probably will be looking for low 2:30s.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Stay healthy, make improvements, maximize my potential.

Went to the sports MD finally (jogged 1 mile to get there, which only hurt a little bit, although I had a dull ache for an hour afterwards).  Had an x-ray done, and apparently I have a stress reaction in my tibia.  This sucks, but at least I caught it before it grew into a full fledged fracture.  Right now, there's just a lot of bone remodeling in my leg, but there's not a crack - at least not to the extent that it would show up on an x-ray.  The doctor's hypothesis was that the pounding at St George, coupled with the very minimal training I put in for it, really did a number on my right leg, which is already weaker than my left thanks to the long-term, but now very minor, hip issues.  My gait is still not perfect, and my compensation for my hip probably put extra stress on the tibia.  The good news is that I can still ski/hike/etc if I'm not being reckless and jumping off of stuff, and since my leg already feels substantially better now than it did a couple weeks ago, I can ease back into training pretty soon, especially if I stick to soft surfaces.  In the past, I'd have been really bummed about this, but after losing a year and a half of productive running to mononucleosis from late 2009 to mid 2011, I'm better at having patience in these types of scenarios.  I'll almost certainly still get to run a spring marathon, so I can't complain.

Also, I remember, humorously at this point, a conversation with Jake a year or two ago about how fat people are more likely to get bone injuries on steep downhill courses like St George, so I guess I must fall into that category. :)

i had a minor tibial sfx in 2011. i was fully off of it for one week (i used crutches and it felt substantially better after just a few days), then just two weeks of XT and i was back to running. i started out running with an air cast as a precaution, and then used a compression sleeve for about a month (whether that actually helped or not, it made it feel better to run). i haven't had a problem with it since. just don't get tempted to start running too soon. it should heal up quickly. good luck.

Thanks. I've taken the last nearly 2 weeks off, and it's already a lot better. I jogged a mile to the doctor's office today, which I forgot to log, come to think of it, and it only hurt a little bit, instead of more moderately, as it did in my last run. Details on the air cast? How serious of a compression sleeve?

this was the air cast i used (the doc recommended it and told me to wear it during my first week back to running):

as for the compression sleeve -- nothing special, just a standard CEP calf sleeve.

i got the air cast from a med supply store in cottonwood heights: http://www.orthomed-center.com/

Thanks. Do you think the air cast was actually helpful? If so, I'll pick one up.

i honestly don't know if it actually helped or if i just mentally felt better because i was wearing something to protect my leg, but it definitely felt better than not wearing it, especially in the first week back.
