2019 Running Schedule

Feb - Mesa Phoenix Marathon (AZ): 2:37:45. Lingering flu didn't help, but I still got a PR.

April - Bonneville Shoreline Trail Marathon (UT). Mostly just going to be a training run. Finally got myself into the sub-4 club last year, so I'll just have fun with it this year.

May - Stillwater Half Marathon (MN). Goal race for Spring. Looking for ~1:12.

October- Chicago Marathon (IL). We'll see where I'm at in Fall, but probably will be looking for low 2:30s.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Stay healthy, make improvements, maximize my potential.

9 miles easy.  Eaglewood Lofts to Orchard to 5th South to 89, and back.  7:10 AP didn't feel bad at all, although I was definitely affected by the heat  (only low 80s, but it was cooler in Africa) and I felt very dehydrated when I finished.

3 x 3 mile on treadmill.  New apt has a few of the Freemotion i7.9, which are pretty awesome.  They go anywhere from -3.0 to 30.0 on decline/incline, and up to 12mph, with a touch screen, and get up to full speed within a couple seconds, which is nice.  My only complaint is that the treadmill doesn't go above 9.0 mph on a decline, which seems silly.  I'd love to be able to do a few runs at -1% just to get used to the average of St George, but not being able to go faster than 6:40 makes the decline setting worthless.

Anyway, as for the workout, I felt aerobically insane.  17:03, 16:49, 16:39 at 0%, as usual, to match effort with pace I'd run for tempo at sea level, thanks to lack of wind resistance (ie, like a 10-11 mph tailwind).  Didn't have a watch and there was no clock, so I couldn't count rest, but it was probably about 3 minutes.  Faster than I have ever done this workout.  I could tell that my legs were absolutely flying and they were consequently considerably more sore than they normally are after a tempo workout, but I just felt like an aerobic monster.  Really awesome.  I need to spend more time up at 19,341' above sea level.

6:59 pace.  Late, so did it on treadmill.  Legs are a bit sore from the workout still.  Would've done more this week, but my legs just weren't quite feeling normal and I also got sick, so I just considered it a bridge week to get back into things.

From new place (Eaglewood) over to Legacy Parkway trail, up to Pages exit, up to 650 North (overshot Orchard since it's just 400N in that area), through the neighborhood, winding up to 800 N, down 500 South to Orchard, and back home.  Did the last 2 miles (1% downhill grade, with some roll) at 6:10 pace.  90 degrees when I started, 80 when I finished, but brought a bottle and was fine with the heat.  Aerobically, the fast miles felt very comfortable, but I need to get my legs totally back under me if I'm going to run fast at St George.  Fortunately, my legs tend to come back pretty quickly, so I think I should be able to run well there still.

1 easy, then 13 fast, TM.  First 12.5 at 6:00 pace, then the last .5 at 5:30.  Harder than I wanted it to feel near the end, as my legs still haven't really come around for longer efforts.  I feel really fast when I'm fresh still, but my strength just isn't where I need it yet.

My place to Legacy Trail, up 8.2 more miles up the trail, which eventually became the Denver and Rio Grand Western Rail Trail, following that to just shy of the Centerville/Farmington line, and then back almost exactly the same way, but slightly more direct after exiting Legacy.  Didn't bring water, which was incredibly stupid, and it was surprisingly hot and sticky for running after sunset, so I got quite dehydrated, as I was only able to get a quick drink of water from a fountain twice over this entire distance.  My legs were pretty beat by the end, despite a very easy pace (7:52 AP), and I suspect the dehydration had something to do with it.  That, and, you know, not having done anything longer than 16 miles in like a month.  Ugh.  I've got a lot to do in the next couple weeks...

This week has sucked with a niggling cold and a ton on my plate at work.  Finally got out for a run.  3 up the Eaglewood neighborhood, 3 back down the steep hill at 5:30 pace.

15.6 at MP / effort.  Started with Fritz, but he's in monster shape right now, so I couldn't keep up without killing myself and let him go.  I ran the 7.8 up from the zoo to the top of Emigration at 7:43 AP, waited for Fritz, who went a bit down the backside before coming back, and then ran down at 6:0x AP for 6:52 overall AP up and down the canyon, with a 1385' net climb, with a little roll both up and down, totalling about 1500' of climb and 1500' of loss.  My legs were still sore from the beating of running down the steep Eaglewood neighborhood two days ago, so this doesn't seem so bad.  If this genuinely was marathon effort, which I think it was, I may actually still be able to run something kind of decent at St George.  It certainly won't be as fast as I wanted after Phoenix, but I may be able to get close to being in the ballpark of the time I ran there.  I'm going to get one or two more long (very easy) runs this week to make sure I can handle the distance, and then I'll just have to make do with the fitness I have.

15.1 miles with my new Skechers that I got on eBay.  I bought them in red, white, and blue, and apparently this meant that they're the Chevron Houston Marathon edition, as branded on the insole.  Funny.  In any case, I planned on 18, but it was hotter than I expected at 8PM and I got really thirsty, and the shoes also started bugging my right heel slightly after about 10 miles (I really ought to break in new shoes I've never bought before if I want to do long runs in them), so I just went a little shorter.  My place to Legacy trail to some trail that intersects it up in Centerville right before the long tunnel under the highway, on that to 4th North in Bountiful, to 89, and back.  Casual AP of 7:50.  Marathon is in 11 days, so while I wanted this longer effort (and honestly, more), I don't want to do anything that isn't immediately recoverable at this point.  Bottom line is that I'm not even close to top fitness right now, but I'd estimate that I was in ~2:37-2:38 shape for St George in March, given good weather, unlike what I had at Phoenix, so I imagine I can still hang on for ~2:45, maybe a little better if I'm not stupid during the race.  My speed is fine, but my endurance just isn't great right now and my legs still seem feeble on longer efforts.  I wouldn't race, but I've wanted to do St George for years, so I owe it to myself to at least run it.  I do plan on correcting the feeble legs with some serious base work once I'm recovered.  A couple good months of unemcumbered easy high mileage really seems to last me awhile.

Easy AM run with Fritz and a new crew.  I went shorter so I could get to work early.  Barely been running, just been super busy.  Saturday probably won't go that well, but oh well.  In other news, Daria opened the White House BRAIN Conference today, which is incredible.  Her thing starts at 1:09 in the video below:
