Top Of Utah Marathon

2:46:11 (6:20) 11th overall 5th in Age Group.  Didn't get chicked.

RACE RESULTS:

This race was designed as a workout to get ready for St. George.  No taper (ok, I had a one day taper yesterday) and I hit my mileage peak today as well.  The plan was that if I was feeling good, I would try to break 2:50.  If not then run between 2:50 and 2:55.  I must have been feeling good I guess.

I ran most of the race with Kory.  It was sure nice to have company and to keep our pace honest and consistent.  I was not in the Jon pace group but they had a great time and I am kind of jealous.  Expect for the pain I guess.  I would have died if I had run with them.  Quite a story that I will leave to Jon to tell.

Here is my race/workout breakdown.

 Mile 1  6:17  160  HR  I jumped out and settled into a easy/comfortable pace
Mile 2  6:23  164  I feel really good and am holding back
 Mile 3  6:18  163  I was originally thinking 6:30's but decided to keep 6:20's.
Mile 4  6:14  165  I am happy my HR is still low
Mile 5  6:23  165  I am bored, but talking to the people around is nice
 Mile 6  6:19  166  Same old
Mile 7  6:20  167  Still cruising along with Kory
Mile 8  6:10  164  Good downhill this mile
Mile 9  6:18  162  Sun is out now so my hands are warming up
Mile 10  6:22  162  I am running out of topics to discuss with Kory
 Mile 11  6:22  162  Same old
Mile 12  6:09  163  The tailwind is showing up now - sweet
Mile 13  6:13  163  Dan and James ran by going up the canyon
1/2  1:22:26    34 seconds faster than the first half in Ogden Marathon.
Mile 14  5:54  164  Letting the wind push me along
Mile 15  6:07  166  Out of the canyon and the crowds are awesome
Mile 16  6:13  166  Starting to work now to hold this pace
Mile 17  6:17  167  Kory pulled away and it took a mile to catch back up
Mile 18  6:22  167  The "fun" is about to begin
Mile 19  6:29  170  Uphill into millville - Had to work hard
Mile 20  6:32  170  More hill, and trying to recover
Mile 21  6:16  169  Good downhill into Providence
Mile 22  6:36  169  My Family was cheering me on this mile!
 Mile 23  6:37  171  Kory pulled away again, but I don't care because I will break 2:50
Mile 24  6:38  169  Same effort as in the canyon, just slower splits
 Mile 25  6:30  171  Hey, I am almost done
Mile 26  6:25  174  Caught and passed Kory - Working hard now to finish strong
Mile 26.2  1:12  177  Got down to 5:10 pace for the finish

First half was in 1:22:26 and the second in 1:23:45.  I am happy with that as the course is not condusive to an even split.  Overall, it felt easy until the halfway point.  At that point it turned into a big workout (effort-wise).  The last 10K was hard, but I didn't push it until the last mile.  NO WALL!  That is sure nice to not hit the wall in a marathon.  I drank gatoraide at almost all the aid stations.  I even stopped to walk until I drank the full cup.  I also took two gu's and they helped too.  I didn't lose any time by stopping to drink.  A couple of times people with me didn't stop and I caught them back easily within a 1/4 mile.  Overall, I am pleased with the race as it shows that I can break 2:40 at St. George.

T-2:46:11 (6:20) 166 ave 179 max

Oh, did I mention this was a

6:34 minute PR

25:09 faster than last year on this course

58:04 faster than the previous marathon (my first).

Great job. Taking 6 minutes off your PR is great considering this wasn't an all out effort. I'm still in awe over your improvement this year.

From Chad on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 17:49:52

Cody--nice "workout" . . . I bet you didn't think you would be throwing down 2:46 for the marathon and calling it a workout a couple of years ago! Great job.

From Dustin on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 18:09:38

Great job! that is the exact time I ran last year at St. George, so I know you're going to kill that. You have had a great year of training, and you are going to have a great race at St. George. I don't know if I'm in good enough shape to hang with you at St. George, it would be nice to have a pace group working together, but we'll have to see how everybody is feeling.

From James in Sunny AZ on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 18:10:19

Way to go, Cody. I have always liked the idea of walking through the aid stations to drink - otherwise you end up spilling most of it down your front! Looks like you are on track for yet another PR at St. George.

From Bethany on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 18:10:21

Hey babe

Nice job! I am so proud of you. Glad I could be there to witness it! Huge improvement over any other race I have seen!

From Michelle on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 18:34:39

Congratulations! And way to keep your pace strong on that uphill portion. Way to keep your year of PR's going strong!

From ashman on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 18:51:35

Nice going buddy. I know that this was tough for you but you hung in there!

From Jon on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 19:57:06

6 minute PR on a training run! You are turning into Paul! Good job today and best of luck in St. George. You are going to kick some butt. (Am I allowed to say that on this family-friendly blog?). You are going to kick some rear end. By the way, the results link doesn't work...

From James on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 20:16:04

Nice run today! I figured that you wouldn't hold back like you claimed you would.

Sorry that I didn't jump in with you at the 1/2, but I am pretty sick, and was lucky to even make it as far as I did.

From Cody on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 20:46:51

Thanks for the nice comments and support. I do love the blog and the camaraderie that results from it. Happy running to all...

From Cody on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 20:49:34

Oh, Jon, the like to the results work fine...as long as you are on my computer at least. Oh well..

The results are at http://www.milliseconds.com/Results.php

From Cody on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 20:51:01

Uhh...Like = link (whatever)

From James on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 21:22:51

That is a very good picture!

From Jon on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 22:08:21

Can you email me that picture?

From Jon on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 22:14:38

Is anyone else having problems with the milliseconds link? I am getting some random page that says the milliseconds page domain has expired.

From Cody on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 22:23:12

Jon-

I am able to use the site consistently on my desktop and my laptop. I would have to say it is "user error". Just kidding. You probably should upgrade that old Windows 95 machine...

From Jon on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 22:39:12

I keep getting one of those websites when you mistype one letter, kind of the "we're not really a website but are trying to act like one". But really, does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this so it loads the real website properly?

From Cody on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 22:55:38

Jon -

Its possible that your DNS server is acting up and it is not forwarding the URL to the right IP address. If you know how to change your DNS server (or add an alternate) to 68.87.69.146

From Cody on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 22:57:30

You can also go to the Top of Utah website and click on the link to the results from previous years. Does that link work for you?

From Paul Petersen on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 22:58:12

Jon - you can just right-click on the picture and save directly.

Cody - awesome job today. My wife and I were talking about you during our drive home from Ogden today. We are both very impressed with your progress over this past year. You are the poster-boy for what consistent, smart training can do when combined with desire. Big things ahead at St. George!

From Jon on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 23:02:10

I give up. I'm just going to wait for work on Monday and look from there. TOU link doesn't work either. I'm blaming Quest DSL. Cody, how do you change DNS?

From Cody on Sat, Sep 15, 2007 at 23:08:32

Jon- I am assuming a few things. You dont have a router and have DHCP enabled. If that is the case you must change it at the Quest modem. Usually those have an IP address and act like a router where it gives the computer connected all its network settings. You need to connect to the modem/router and change the settings there. If you know how to do that, I can help. If not, sorry. Contact Quest to have them help you get in to change settings.

If you have a separate router, it is much easier.

From Michael on Sun, Sep 16, 2007 at 21:07:13

Way to go Cody, congrats on another PR, looks like you should be running good at St George. Good luck on getting ready and running in it

From Adam RW on Sun, Sep 16, 2007 at 23:22:49

Cody,

It was great to get to talk to you some more. I look forward to running with you in the future and to seeing what you can do when you apply yourself in St. George!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Sep 17, 2007 at 11:54:22

Cody - isn't it nice to PR by 6 minutes while doing a training run?

From Mik'L on Mon, Sep 17, 2007 at 12:02:57

Good job Cody! You will definitely continue your year of PR's at STG. See you then!
