Top of Utah Half Marathon.  I have been out of town all week and didn't get much running in while I was gone so I ended up having a pretty good taper for today.  The downside is that I hit my pillow at 2 am (due to flying home last night from San Francisco) and had to get up at 5.  I don't think that affected me that much though.  My goals for the race were to PR (I knew I could easily beat my best of 1:21:45) and to break 1:18.  I was excited for the race to see where I am at so I can set a realistic goal for St. George.

The race conditions were ideal 48 degrees at the start with a couple of miles of nice tailwind down the canyon.  Good day for fast times.  I started out just behind Jon.  Paul, Logan, Walter and James were ahead of me.  I tried to keep up with Jon but when he started to crank out some 5:20 stuff, he dusted me.  About that time Taha came up on me and we ran together most of the race.  He took off after James (all the other guys were way ahead by then) on hollow road and dusted me.  I was able to work my way back to him on the millville hills and pass.  I couldn't quite catch James as he held me off.  I did get chicked though on the millville hills.  Cynthia Fowler was right behind me (15-20 seconds) the whole race and she did a good job on those hills.  I kicked at the end of the race to catch her back but couldn't quite pass her.  We ended up less than a second apart with James a few seconds ahead.  I am pretty pleased with the result as I killed my goal and my PR by 5 min and 45 seconds.

Good race today. You'll have fun at St. George- just practice lots of steep downhills before then. 2 minutes under your goal- awesome!

From Dustin on Sat, Aug 25, 2007 at 16:13:38

Great job on your race. The PR's just keep coming for you, which is great. St. George should be a lot of fun. I just hope I can keep some of you guys in sight.

Congrads on the PR, awesome time.

From ashman on Sat, Aug 25, 2007 at 19:34:05

Nice PR Cody. You are really making progress buddy.

From Paul Petersen on Sat, Aug 25, 2007 at 21:02:25

Big breakthrough today Cody; nice job. Today was something you can savor for a long time, and the product of a lot of hard work. Race calculators predict your marathon to be a high 2:39 to low 2:40 based on this performance. St. George is faster though. Start getting the idea of sub-2:38 stuck in your head. Keep icing that knee and maybe some moderate ibu as well to control the inflammation.

Great run today Cody! I agree with Paul that this was a breakthru race for you. I look forward to seeing your results at TOU. Unfortunately I have work conflicts with TOU as that was my origional plan. I am trying to get in St. George somehow now as I will be in St. George for work the week of the race anyway.

Way to go Cody, thats quite a run breaking your PR after 3 hours of sleep

From Andy on Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 12:54:53

Nice job, Cody. I am so impressed with your progression this year.

From Chad on Sun, Aug 26, 2007 at 17:39:40

What a HUGE pr, great effort! Your consistency and determination have really paid off, and will continue to do so.

Good job Cody. Hope your knee feels better. 2:3... at STG for you.

From James on Mon, Aug 27, 2007 at 01:12:20

Nice race! You have worked hard lately and it is paying off. I was yours for the taking!

Getting chicked is not fun, speaking from personal experience, but getting chicked just by Cynthia Fowler and only by less than a second is a big improvement. She ran 2:47 on the TOU course last year, and it was not a fast day at all. She also was ahead of you by 43 seconds in the DesNews 10 K, so you've closed the gap quite a bit. Last year, even though you ran TOU much faster than you expected, you would have had to build a chicken coop if they gave you a live chicken for every woman that was ahead of you. Now it takes a super-chick to beat you by a second. Pretty soon, you will be in the chick-free zone, at least in local races. On the world level, of course, it is much harder - it takes a sub-2:15 marathon to get there.
