So I decided to prolong my racing season for one more race before I go into hibernation for the winter.  No, its not going to be a marathon (thank you), but actually a 5K.  Yep, a simple, "easy" 5K.  I am going to do the First Dam Run 5K on Nov 1st.  Flat, Fast, loop course.  The goal is to finally break 17 minutes.  My PR is 17:08 and I think I can do it.  I have decided to cram for the race working on my VO2 Max and see if I can up my pain threshold.  Today was day 1 of that mission.

I ran the Providence Hills loop.  I wasn't feeling too great, as I am fighting a bug that attacked our house (Lily was the latest victim up barfing last night).  The goal was 10x2 mins at CV pace (not quite ready to do VO2Max work so CV fartlek will have to do) with 1 min slow jog rest.  My flat CV pace is 5:40, but this course is anything but flat, so I ran more by feel.

  • 5:58 pace (rolling up)
  • 8:00 pace (nasty uphill)
  • 6:33 (uphill)
  • 6:28 (uphill)
  • 5:15 (down)
  • 5:10 (down)
  • 5:30 (rolling down)
  • 5:28 (rolling down)
  • 5:36 flat
  • 5:39 flat

That's a great strategy to do a 5k and break that time. It's really hard to want to get back into marathon training when you train for one so hard for along period of time.

Are you then looking for next spring to do your next marathon.

It will be at least March before my next marathon. Maybe SLC?

8:00 tempo pace? I'm hoping that was up the 300E hill, and not up the mild hill towards the canyon...

That must have been a freaking beast of a hill. You were flying the rest of the time!

Good to see you will be at the first dam run. I am planning on running the 10 K and trying to break 40 minutes. Not sure how this will go because I haven't dare do speed work since the marathon. I hope you and your family gets over your sicknesses

Dude, I think I might have the same injury you had back in May after Ogden. Good to see you were able to rest and rehab through it. Did you ever get it checked out by the doc? I have a friend here in IF who had the same pain and it was a Jones fracture and he did do the walking boot and was out for 6 weeks. I have an appointment on Tuesday to see what is going on.

From James on Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 12:41:37

I hated that first dam run last year because of the crappy job of those putting it on! The course is good though.

From cody on Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 13:16:40

Yes it was a nasty hill, thanks

Matt - I look forward to the race to see you break 40 mins!

Jeff - Oh, man! I will have to tell you all the stuff I did to re-hab. I dont have time at this point. I was officially diagnosed with Tendonosis

James- I remember how much you were disgusted with that race. Didn't change my mind though.
