Medium-long run.

4:53 am, 48-39°F, 41% humidity, wind 5 SSE.

I checked the temperature before I got dressed to run this morning and it was 48, but I was worried that the temperature would drop during my run. I debated whether to wear long pants or shorts. I finally went with shorts, even though I thought the temperature would drop. Well, the temperature did drop and I was getting cold by the end of my run.

I tried to take it fairly slow and easy today because I've got a long marathon-pace run on Saturday. This week is kind of a big week in terms of my training schedule, and so I'm just trying to survive it. Next week is a recovery week. Then I have 5 hard weeks after that before I start cutting back leading up to the race. I sometimes wonder what possessed me to do this training plan.

A while ago I put 2 or 3 whole albums that belong to my oldest son on my mp3 player and I haven't listened to them all the way through, so I sometimes hear a song on my mp3 player that I've never heard before. That happened this morning while I was running. It turned out to be a pretty good song for running and made me feel energetic. It's a song by Gogol Bordello called "Suddenly...(I Miss Carpaty)." For some reason I like this weird eastern-European rock.

I ran my home/work loop and made a pit stop at the Northridge rec center about 4 miles into the run.

Nice job Carolyn! If I hear a song on my ipod I don't know I usually skip it :)

I hope the snow doesn't hit you guys like it's hit us! It's been snowing for more than 24 hours now. However, it isn't really sticking much. We have maybe 3-4 inches is all, but it's just annoying!

Good luck on Saturday, a long MP run sounds like a fun one :)

Nice pace for an easy run! You have a very rigorous training schedule and I think you are doing amazeing!

From Michelle on Thu, Apr 01, 2010 at 10:17:26 from 71.218.114.99

Great job! Hopefully soon it will just be warm and you won't have to deal with the clothing issue as much. You are doing awesome following the marathon plan but I guess you have no choice since you are a slave to the plan!

Nice big miles. And sorry about the snow we are sending you. Yesterday it was 80 when I left Dallas and snowing when I landed in SLC.

EXCELLENT 2nd MLR of the week! You're half way in the program. I felt the same when I got to this point. Looking to what's ahead in the plan was frightening. So just take one training day at a time and before you know it, the MLRs seem easier and you begin to look forward to Saturday's long runs where you can put it (the week's training) all together.

I am so very impressed with how intelligently you run each training run and understand each purpose and execute them so precisely. GREAT JOB!

Are you running 16 w/ 12 at mp on Sat.? BEST of LUCK! You will do GREAT as always. Hope the weather cooperates for ya!

Inspirational. Shaping up to be a big week mileage wise.

Great training, C!!!!! You are superwoman!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Apr 01, 2010 at 12:08:04 from 24.8.167.243

Yes, Smooth, I've got 16 w/12 at mp on Saturday. And it just occurred to me, literally minutes ago, that when this week is over, I will be exactly half-way through the training plan. I'm glad to know that you felt the same way at this point in the plan. That gives me hope.

And Smooth, what did you do when you got to the places on the plan where it says 8K-15K tune-up race, or something like that?

From auntieem on Thu, Apr 01, 2010 at 13:00:23 from 67.182.146.94

Very, very consistent easy run miles, Carolyn! Good luck on that Saturday run; those are such fun.

Wow, you have been running A LOT OF MILES this last couple weeks. You are amazing for sticking to your training plan so well. You deserve next week's recovery milage and will come back strong & energetic afterwards. Good job!!!

I'm with Smooth--take it one day at a time. You have accomplished so much as far as running goes! If anyone can get through your plan, it's you (no pressure or anything :)

I did the same thing yesterday deciding to wear shorts and then regretting it. Temps change fast. Glad you had a rec. center for your pit stop. I had to make an urgent pit stop on the side of the road this morning and I was not very hidden from the many people driving by. At least I finished right before a couple walked by with their dog. Phew.

From Smooth on Thu, Apr 01, 2010 at 18:02:21 from 174.23.251.49

Carolyn ~ Pete put those 8K-15K tune-up races there every other week on the day before a long run for good reasons. It would be ideal to do those tune up races as scheduled.

There are 3 of those in week 6, 4, and 2. I ran the Lake to Lake on week 6. I was going to run the Spectrum 10K on week 4 but couldn't get out of town so I did a hill run and add on extra 2 miles w/ fast finish on Sat.

This week has my last tune-up race. I thought about running the Ogden 1/2; but b/c of General Conference, I'm staying close to home. So I'll probably run 5 miles tempo at 10K+10sec pace. Winter weather makes it hard though. Hopefully in a month you will have better weather and perhaps schedule one or two of those tune-up race. You do have to juggle around the long run since most of the races are on Sat. If you're like me...no running on Sunday!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Apr 01, 2010 at 18:14:22 from 198.241.217.15

Yes, no running on Sundays. So if the purpose of the tune-up race the day before the long run is to not run the long run too fast, and all the races are on Saturdays, the long run would have to be done the day before the race or at least two days after the race, thus defeating the purpose of running the race the day before the long run. So wouldn't it be better to just do a "virtual" race - do a run of the appropriate distance at the race pace for that distance?

From Smooth on Fri, Apr 02, 2010 at 10:43:00 from 174.23.251.49

Yes, that's one option. Another option is to add the mileage of the long run (most are 17-18) to the race, i.e. warm up before and cool down after. One of my friends got up early and ran 10-12 miles easy before toeing the line at a 10K. I think AmberG on the blog ran the Spectrum 10K (she took 2nd in women) and add on later for a 20 miler couple weeks ago.
