This run was good for me. I've been stressed out lately, particularly last night and this morning. The run calmed me down some. But I still have some problems to deal with today. Namely a broken pipe and my in-laws are coming today for my son's high school graduation, which is tomorrow. My son has a bunch of graduation practice and cap and gown pick up and that kind of stuff today. And I've got to work today. Fortunately, my house is still somewhat clean from the work I did for my brother's visit last weekend. I've just got to make sure there's nothing rotting in my refrigerator, because my mother-in-law will go through the refrigerator while I'm at work and then give me a report of everything that's spoiled and tell me she didn't throw it away because she thought I might be saving it for something. It makes me crazy. If I've left it there long enough for it to spoil, I've forgotten about it and am not saving it and don't enjoy hearing a recitation of all of the things I've failed to keep up with in my refrigerator.

I ran to the high school track this morning to do the strides. It only took me a little over 2 miles to get there, but I wanted to run 3 miles warmup, so I ran a couple of laps on the track before I started the strides. I might have pushed it a little too hard on a couple of the strides. Incidentally, I have no idea how people maintain 5:30 pace over the length of a marathon.

I'm surprised your mil is so bold. My mother would do that for sure.

Good luck with all the stresses. They will end soon. And congrats to your son!

From The Quiet Pirate on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 10:03:46 from 24.199.205.252

You've got a lot going on in your life right now!

Sorry your MIL is critical of what's in your fridge. I'm relieved a little that I'm not the only one who feels like MIL is critical of me.

Send her to my mom's house and she'll be there for months making an inventory of everything that's expired and rotten. I know this was already discussed last week with the ice cream situation on RAD's blog.

On a happier note, congrats to you and your son for making it to graduation. Has he chosen his University yet?

And incidentally, I have no idea how people run 5:33 strides, let alone keep up the pace for a marathon either. Good work out today.

I'll be thinking of you and sending good thoughts your way as you tackle the in-laws, graduation, work, and all the other things life throws at you this week.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 10:05:49 from 24.8.167.243

QP - he's going to the University of Northern Colorado.

I ran 5:33 for about 20 seconds. That's all. And who knows if the Garmin is even accurate in calculating a pace in that length of time.

From Michelle on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 10:15:37 from 97.118.34.35

5:33 is really fast even for 20 seconds. Sorry you have so much stress in your life right now. I hope the in law visit and graduation goes well. Bummer about your pipe breaking especially with the timing of everything. Good luck with your day today.

From CookieLegs on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 10:47:36 from 71.36.75.137

Really great pace on the strides this morning!

And congratulations on your son's graduation, even if it is making your life more hectic right now!

Hum . . maybe you need to introduce your mil to running? (JK) If she were training as hard as you, she wouldn't bother analyzing the fridge contents! Good luck cleaning the fridge - I did mine last weekend - it sure needed it! :)

oops sorry about the mistake in my prior comment!

From Metcalf Running on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 11:22:46 from 207.225.192.66

Nice run! Enjoy all the excitment of your son's graduation, what a great time for kids! Everything is in front of them, and all things are possible.

Sorry about the MIL, but don't let her get to you, there are tons more important things then what is in your refirgerator.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 11:23:58 from 24.8.167.243

My MIL is 78 years old. I don't think she's going to start running! She just generally doesn't get my running. A year ago last March, I was staying at her house in Orem and I would go to Sasha's house in Provo in the mornings and run with people there. I'd come back after the run and she'd say something like, "Did you go walking with those people again?" And then last May when I ran my first marathon, she suggested that my husband run it with me. Keep in mind that my husband is overweight and completely sedentary. My mother, on the other hand, thought I was going to die running the marathon or at least have to be carted off the course by an ambulance.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 11:25:10 from 24.8.167.243

By the way, I've got a plumber coming between 2 and 4 this afternoon. He's going to have to cut a hole in the ceiling or the wall to see what's going on. Dang it.

From Tracy on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 11:29:05 from 209.175.177.37

Ha ha ha ha ha. People clueless about running are funny. I love those 2 extremes.

Your mother could be my mother. She said something to me over the weekend to the effect of "Keep running and you'll never be able to have another baby."

Mothers. Gotta love them.

From Snoqualmie on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 11:39:50 from 24.18.192.33

It's a common stressor. I hope you can shake it off, get a bubble bath sometime soon, and sail through this with joy. Take care of those adrenals!!!! You need them fresh for Newport and for all your health.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 12:23:32 from 198.241.217.15

I can't take a bubble bath until the plumber gets the leak fixed.

What do I do to take care of my adrenals, Sno?

From Nan on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 12:29:56 from 174.51.250.151

When we were finishing up our 200M intervals yesterday and feeling BEAT at the end of a hard workout my Coach says, "Do you realize that pace we just ran is SLOWER than world record pace for the marathon?" I was dying to hold it for 200M, yet someone in the world holds faster than that for 26.2. Amazing.

From Derunzo on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 12:33:49 from 65.220.66.195

Hi Carolyn,

I'm new to this site and I'm planning to run my first marathon in October. Right now I'm just logging miles, but I would like to get a training program started. Any suggestions? Tracy directed me your way.

Deron

P.S. mother-in-laws enjoy being punched in the face. Just kidding.

From Derunzo on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 14:18:56 from 64.56.60.130

Thanks so much! I appreciate your time and information during this hectic week.

Good Luck with the leak!

From Snoqualmie on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 15:13:35 from 24.18.192.33

Adrenals... Well, you're not going to like this, but you have to eliminate as much stress and worry as you can. If there are any burdens you can "let go of," do it. Meditation and relaxation exercises are supposed to help. Clean diet, adequate sleep. It's hard, I know, but adrenal fatigue is no joke; you go from being sure that you could not possibly cut back on responsibilities to being forced to do so. And it screws up so many other hormone functions too. "You cannot micromanage hormones." This is why I gave up playing with the orchestra a few years ago, at least until I finish homeschooling SnoFlake. I had the 24 hour saliva test for adrenals and it was bad news. Took me about 7 months to recover, and expensive supplements.

From RAD on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 15:16:17 from 67.172.229.125

Okay, I am laughing SO hard about the MIL comments (and mothers!). As discussed by QP, I thought the same thing...can I send her to MY mom's house? If she makes the list I'll throw it out, she doesn't even have to tell my mom!! :) Oh, and I can't even BEGIN to explain how my mom and MIL talk about my running...you all would get a workout laughing!! My mom can't ever leave well enough alone, she reads an article in the paper about someone running something and all of a sudden she's become an expert and tells me what I need to do to train to run as fast as them. My MIL thinks I'm slowly killing my unborn child (she's said this in numerous 'passive aggressive ways in the last 10 weeks) by running while pregnant. At least he's going to come out with brain damage. Oh dear...the ones we love can be SO crazy sometimes!!

Carolyn, you hit some CRAZY WICKED paces on those strides and are doing a great job balancing all that is on your plate right now. Good luck with the leak/ceiling/graduation/running/errands and maybe finding 2 minutes to sit and relax!!! Keep up your hard work, it helps to run out those demons!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 15:20:02 from 198.241.217.15

Well, if I can get this leak fixed, get through the visit from the in-laws, get the kid through graduation, and get my husband over his current accute pain (it's a periodontal absess that he's being treated for), then maybe I'll be able to deal with things.

Oh, and it would help if I could quit my job. Ha.

From RAD on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 15:36:39 from 67.172.229.125

sounds easy to me! (I hope you can hear the EXTREME sarcasm in that statement!).

From KP on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 18:01:41 from 69.255.142.204

ahhhhh.... the joys of the in-laws.

congrats on your sons graduation! enjoy! take lots of pics!

From JD on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 19:26:42 from 70.96.78.157

Hey what do you know, your husband and I have something in common. I'm suffering through a periodontal absess too! It's no joke, and it sucks.

As for the MIL. I think you should plant something in the fridge for her to find, maybe road kill or something. Serve her right for not being civil! :-)

From auntieem on Wed, May 19, 2010 at 20:51:20 from 24.18.77.246

DId you get the fridge cleaned up? Adrenals need B vitamins! And rest. I use beer.

Enjoy the graduation! Don't stress the little stuff, and just try and enjoy the big picture. Have fun.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, May 20, 2010 at 01:04:49 from 24.8.167.243

I got the fridge cleaned up. Son #2 cleaned the kids' bathroom. I had to pay the plumber $250 and I need to re-caulk my bathtub. And patch a hole that the plumber cut in the kitchen ceiling. And I spent 2 1/2 hours at the Honors Convocation tonight. That was way too long.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, May 20, 2010 at 11:15:55 from 24.8.167.243

Really, JD? Are you as miserable as my husband is. He's taking vicodin for the pain.

From JD on Thu, May 20, 2010 at 12:19:57 from 70.96.78.157

Yeah, seriously. I stayed in denial mode until I got through the marathon. Now I'm on antibiotics to clear out some of the infection and oxycodone so I can sleep at night. I hate taking pain killers, but this seems justified.
